In Baltimore, State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby announced that a policy enacted at the start of the pandemic, which stopped prosecution of drug and prostitution charges, would become permanent. Mosby says, “For over a year, we basically came out and said we're not going to prosecute these low-level offenses ... The drug arrests went down by 80%. The number of individuals going in and out of jails went down by 39%." Aired on 04/12/2021.

It’s almost like people block out what they see in the streets everyday and just focus on whatever narrative makes them feel better about what’s going on in their neighborhoods instead of accepting reality

I'm a 50 year old black man in Baltimore and she is wrong. She has conviction rate of 28% and all the veteran prosecutors quit. You don't throw out the baby with the bath water. If you want to fix the system, work harder not lessen your work load. She threw out the charges on a guy with a car full of weed and claimed their wasn't enough evidence.

Very interesting.... if these low level offenses don't matter then wouldn't it be the responsibility of the legislature to strike the laws from the books? Also part of the reason that the subsequent low level arrears went down is because the cops obviously got the point and realized it's pointless to arrest people when the DA won't file charges.

The public have always said make districts and let them be. The states make money if they legalize it, regulate it and it improves the quality and occupation for those involved. There is a big difference between NOT charging and legalizing it.

Marilyn Mosby. April 12, 2021. 'For over a year, we basically came out and said we're not going to prosecute these low-level offenses. Drug possession, prostitution, trespassing, urinating, defecating in public, open container, all of these low-level offenses that have nothing to do with public safety. And what we found out through the data, we eliminated 1400 warrants. We dismissed 1400 cases. And based upon that data, I'm happy to say... drug arrests went down by 80%, the number of individuals going in and out of the jails went down by 39%, the recidivism rate [of] only 5 of those 1500 individuals actually recidivated. AND OUR VIOLENT CRIME, UNLIKE 63 OF THE 66 MAJOR MUNICIPALITIES IN THE COUNTRY, OUR VIOLENT CRIME WENT DOWN 20% AND OUR PROPERTY CRIME WENT DOWN 39%... Low-level offenses never had anything to do with public safety.' (emphasis added 01:00)

I think it's pretty messed up that in a third of this country, you can legally buy weed as easy as you order a pizza. But in some states, you'll get a prison sentence for holding an eighth. Yet 480,000 people die every year from cigarettes versus 0 for weed. Like seriously. 🤔🤷‍♂️

The "Justice System" on local and county levels is a very lucrative business providing hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines from lower income people, and a provider of government jobs with great benefits at the expense of the struggling part of communities. Well to do and rich don't get arrested because they can afford great lawyers and local prosecutors lose those cases.

I agree with everything you initiated however defecating in the street during covid, would only increase the rate because covid-19 also found in the stool plus it's disgusting and it does create health problems to get flies and all other type of bacteria, so therefore they need to do 3 days in jail unless you're homeless

IMO the murder rate is directly related to the " low level" drug dealers who have taken over my block and run it day in and day out. I go to work and they sell " low level" drugs on my street then go back to there homes. I'm so annoyed and if in fact this is her stance then yes I'm ready for her to leave. Look at the coalition between the homicide rate and affiliation with illegal drugs and see what you have. Thank you Ms. Moby for your service take care as you leave.

Drug laws are crimes against an adults right to decide what they consume. Historically drug laws have been used to target poor, minorities and used as a tool to go after political opponents. The tough on drugs is tough on crime is a farce, it’s a form of double jeopardy. As one of the two reasons Prohibitionists claim as reasons for drug laws is that drugs supposedly cause users to commit other crimes. Think about that, is theft a crime, so why is drug use on top of theft a worse crime then theft? Personally I believe we should let adults make informed adult decisions on what they choose to put in their body and if they commit crimes while on drugs, then hold them accountable for the actual crimes they commit vs what they might do while using a substance.

drug use and theft are coincided for the simple reason that drugs are what motivate you to create the crime of theft in the first place it is a seed that is naturally planted for you to commit more crime. oh Jesus did you not see that coming

Baltimore murder rate is still on the rise (she claims its stagnated, it's still on average rising), and Baltimore violent crimes are not going down especially 20%, you can find the stats. It went down one year(not 20%), which doesn't indicate anything yet. Keep in mind there's another commenter talking about this DAs conviction rate, which is helping lower those numbers. Everything in Baltimore is getting far worse crime wise with people like this in charge. Halting prosecution of drug charges is going to get more people killed. So progressive! Enjoy!
