What instrument does the man in the middle play ?

Mark plays a nice pair on Viennese classical Timpani, from Wiener Pauken Werkstatt. He plays just with fingers, to fit the gentle tone of marimbas.

Hi, no need for that, we just follow the original score with some minor changes for the solo part - i omit some bass tones, which are anyway doubled by the orchestra, and transpose couple of passages one octave higher. Score and parts you can find on IMSLP. The interesting thing about this Concerto and two following ones is that, as i recall, Mozart intentionally orchestrated them in very practical way: these concertos can be performed with winds or just using strings. He needed a practical solution for his touring. So we perform only strings parts and it works. Extra Timpani just brings a tiny fleur of "symphonic" feeling. And couple of pianissimo rolls in Rondeau to support basses are so cool, not to miss, later Bruckner will use this colour a lot. Technically, it i not difficult at all to play. (Ok, solo part needs time and patience). The only important aspect is articulation, we use a lot of different ways of dampening and different stroke types. That is why i like to use this concerto for teaching and prepare it with new players in 3-4 days.

Been looking into the Detmold school recording setup this last few weeks to understand it's purpose . So far , I do not anything positive to say about it. Close miking every instrument is counter to the everything meant to be heard in the composition . It is more of a modern over compressed pop method that is spearheading revolt among artists and high end consumers . When all the instruments are " up front " and loud , the loss of dynamics kills the beauty of the music. The audience listening experience has been sacrificed and control has been given to a third party , called a audio engineer , and that engineer tells you what your music should sound like , and alters the recording to suit him.
