personally, i always saw this song as like a precursor/foreshadowing to electra heart. like, this is electra heart before she became the wild homewrecker, prima donna-type we see in the album- maybe just after a bad breakup or failure in life, that convinces her that love is a lie, which she then contemplates in fear & loathing. idk, probably doesn’t work timeline-wise, but it’s an interesting thought.
@alex_valden4 ай бұрын
I know this is an old comment, but I really agree with this, and I think that there's always some sort of foreshadowing in each of her album. For TFJ, as you said, I think Shampain but also Numb/Guilty both (unintentionally I assume) already expose the inner-self of Electra Heart. Then, in Fear & Loathing, I think that this song is a perfect transition to Froot which is all about self-acceptance.

Ellie Goulding is not more popular than marina and the diamonds. Sure ellie Goulding has a couple of billion view videos but the ceo of KZbin herself Susan Wojcicki said that view numbers are inaccurate and that artists can buy views for there videos so view numbers are a poor representation of artist success. In terms of chart success marina is more internationally known having Froot go to 4 in 31 counties, Marina also keeps her chart positions for longer periods of time. Marina has also sold more records than ellie Goulding totaling at 13 million sales while ellie Goulding has sold 11.5 million.

LOL! So close to what I thought. When I see her backup dancers I think 'junkie zombies'. They do look kinda 80's too. The big hair, and the clothes a bit. Plus the fact the video is mainly shot at night and everybody looks strung out, which is kinda how so many 80's productions looked, the 80's being the decade often seen as the comedown from the 70's. Look at films like Escape from New York and early Gary Numan videos, very dark with a sense of dread and melancholy to them.

I love every song of Marina's and every single album. The family jewels. Electra heart. Froot. Love and fear. She can't sing anything bad. So talented. No matter which song I'm listening to or which album no matter the different styles I love every song and album. There's not a bad song she has come out with. Every song is amazing in its own way. My favourite all time singer. Diamonds forever 💎

I didn't discover her until just before Love + Fear came out. IDK what rock I've been living under, or why nobody told me about her, but she's definitely one of my favorite artists of all time now, and this might just be my favorite song of hers.

People always say the artists copy the originals Madonna, MJ, Marilyn, but they never realize it's called an inspiration, or a tribute to the original artist. Never a copy.

okay but "okay but" is a linguistic stylistic device used to (a) set a tone of informality while (b) conveying a meaning similar to "i don't care what anyone says but". It's along the lines of starting a sentence with "and" despite it not following up on a previous statement, as in "And this is how it all ends." Not all linguistic choices follow a strict rhetorical pattern, nor should they.

As a fellow Diamond I’ve come to terms Marina is anything but a fan of this song. With that said, Sham(e) + Pain being used as a homophone for Champagne is such a genius name for a track about alcoholism. Good job Marina. 💜

If you saw my comment on the Primadonna video, you know I love to overanalyze lol. But hear me out!!!! I've listened to Shampain/watched the video countless times, but the meaning of the song (past just "shame + pain") never occurred to me until just now. On The Family Jewels, this song comes right after the beginning track, "Are You Satisfied?" In AYS, Marina sings about the anxiety that comes with having her dreams of being a pop star realized. She also talks about the coping mechanisms she uses to deal with this anxiety (packing up and running away, smoking, drinking, hiding herself from others, etc). It is clear that at the end of this song, Marina is anxious, yet ready to start her new life as a musician. This is where Shampain comes in. She's still anxious about entering the pop industry (which she has previously spoken for and against in interviews), and it causes her to have sleepless nights. "Drinking champagne" in this song has two meanings: 1. She wants to forget the day she stopped living a normal life to become a musician (which possibly involved having to say goodbye to family and friends who didn't believe in her in the first place), and 2. Shampain is actually the first song she ever co-wrote with someone else (in interviews, she has stated how reluctant she is to co-write with others, because she is a control freak and a perfectionist). She produced this song with Pascal Gabriel, and the line "drinking champagne, made by the angel who goes by the name of Glittering Gabriel" is a reference to him producing the song. On to the video! I think this video for Shampain is a perfect metaphor for how reluctant Marina was to jump into the pop industry. Throughout the video, you see her walking past trashed party girls, all who are zombies, dancing in sync to the song. This imagery could represent how Marina thinks female singers in the pop industry usually never produce the songs themselves, sometimes not even writing their own lyrics. They are zombies who let someone else do the work for them, they are just the voice. Marina slowly enters the circle of girls dancing, yet she is doing her own thing, not trying to be like them. Time goes by, and she realizes that she has to cooperate with at least someone to get by in the industry. 2:14 is when she snaps out of her bubble, realistically going over her options as a female artist. 2:37 is her literally turning back on her previous statements of not wanting to collaborate with others, thus joining the girls and dancing along with them. And though some of her dance moves are the same as theirs, some of hers are different as well :) (I'm sure it's not that deep but let me live)
