Honestly Carmina Burana FD is one of the few memorable and innovative free dances of all time in Ice dance history, a classic program alongside Duchesnay & Duchesnay Missing and Torvill and Dean Bolero. Heard Christopher dean and Jayne Torvill choreographed this program and Marina and Gwendal really brought it to life and gave justice to the song and the overall performance. They were such a strong, beautiful and passionate ice dance couple. I miss them.

Amazing program. It's a shame that most commentators can't shut up when the skaters are performing

Man, what a season it could've been if k/o competed with the same music. I can't even begin to imagine the top 2 teams in ice dance then competing against each other using the same music for their fd

This story about Krylova's back injury being the reason for not competing is a bit suspicious though. They were participating in shows right before start of the season and everything was ok. Then suddenly her injury became so bad that she could not compete so they had to skip the season? However, afterwards she continued skating in the show and she didn't do any surgery and never said that she undergo any other treatment. The only thing she said about her back injury was that it got worse because of stress and pressure. So, stress in Olympic season was less than in 2000? Weird. In fact K/O performed later their carmina burana and it was not nearly as good as this one. Ok, K/O said that they removed some complicated elements when they performedit in the shows, but still this music just did not suit them and overall impression was rather "meh" than "wow". So, it hard to tell what was the real reason behind their decision not to compete in 2000. They may have decided that as the reigning world champions they would get better contracts and so they quit (imho of course)

@@MsRumex i seem to remember suspecting that myself, that suddenly she has an injury and they decide to not compete and subsequently quit. seemed like when they debuted their own CB program, the responses were lukewarm compared to a/p's, and their prior season's FD was ill received already. krylova does have a tendency to be prima donna about things. maybe not as much as grishuk, but she's up there when it came to pressure

@@zilam98 during lockdown I come across one Zhulin's interview, where he told one interesting story. Apparently once, shortly before OD at one of the competition (I forgot which one exactly it was) Alla Shekhovtsova (russian judge and the wife of the president of Russian figure skating federation) came to him with the advise to withdraw Navka and Kostomarov from the competition, because general consensus among the judges was unfavorable for them and their material. He went with this to Navka and Kostomarov but those two decided to compete. In the end they even won, because their competitors made some mistakes. So, if it was a common practice ( judges giving hints about what the results could be) something very similar could have happened to K\O in 2000 season (particularly considering how narrowly they won EC in 1999 and the story with chinese judge at the 1999' WC (where he changed his place ordinals after a brief conversation with referee Gorshkov)

@@MsRumex that's why i'm glad for that big judging change in 2003 to where who wins is no longer determined by mere ordinals and subjectivity. athletes actually have to earn points per element. while it can still be corrupted, at least this new system makes it easier to compare athletes as apples to apples. much less subjectivity involved in the judging. i'm even glad that in ice dance RD, a part of a compulsory dance pattern is required to allow for a more objective comparison. this incorporation did look awkward at first, but of course, the best teams would mint success than failure with it

@@zilam98 Well I have very mixed feelings about new judging as nowadays it is not even obvious who exactly is accountable for each points. It seams that some of the coaches do still get bonus points for nothing, or don't get deductions (some of Tutberidze girls). As for dancing....yes, they are comparing apples with apples but the problem is that all "apples" looked almost exactly the same and it is extremely boring to watch. If you look at the compulsory part of the RD - I have the feeling that even best teams wouldn't have made to the top 10 in 90s with performance like this (all of them are skating far from each other). So I totally lost interest in ice dancing and in the past it was my favorite discipline(((

i found myself more impressed with their NHK performance than their Worlds. their worlds was a bit rough, too much nerves going on. this was more carefree, not as tight nor wild as their worlds
@MsRumex
@MsRumex 3 жыл бұрын
I'd say that at European championship they performed it even better than at NHK trophy. And yes, at worlds they were a bit nervous (particularly first part) but considering the noise and general atmosphere there they still skated it very good.

@@MsRumex a/p did have a rep for being practice skaters than performance skaters. they tend to perform better in practice than in actual competition

@@zilam98 yeh, some commentators would say this (I think it was Tracy Willson mostly) but to me it looked more like they had a tendency to start season not 100% ready and would get better as the season progresses and most of the time would skate the best at the WC. In 1997, 1998, 1999 and in 2001 it was the case. 2000 WC was rather an exception. But this particular championship was in Nice and almost every commentator (british, US, canadian) was saying that the atmosphere was 'insane'. I even remember reading comment of a photographer, who was wondering how did whey manage to skate, as he himself (despite being very close to the ice rink) most of the time could not hear their music at all.
