17:50 The FAA’s declared average male passenger weight is Summer 190 lbs, Winter 195 lbs. Female - Summer 170 lbs, Winter 175 lbs. These weights include only carry-on baggage. Having been in the air taxi industry, it is a constant challenge to fill all the seats of small craft due to weight limitations. This itty bitty craft is not an exception. The Joby model centers around a Useful Load limit of 1000 lbs and four passengers. A pilot weights 190 lbs. The FAA average male passenger with carry-on is 190 lbs. A female averages 170 lbs. In winter, these weights increase 5 lbs. Let’s model a typical flight to JFK with a pilot and four passengers: Pilot (male) = 190 2 male pax = 380 2 male pax bags = 80 ** 2 female pax = 340 2 female pax bags = 80 ** TOTAL = 1070 lbs The Total of 1070 lbs is a summer average. The winter average would be 1110 lbs. Oh, let’s examine the high variance: a four winter male passenger load. All the bodies and bags increase by 5 lbs. This yields 1115 lbs. And, what happens when above average weight collegiate defensive linebacker wants to ride? Or, maybe all the passengers are above “average” weight? This happens all the time in the air taxi industry. Then, people get bumped or flights go over-weight. Either way, the model is not practical unless the model weight is based upon a realistic Max Payload investors can rely upon. Every aircraft manufacturer in existence, Piper, Cessna, Beech, has skewed the performance numbers of their design to appear faster, longer range, better payload, etc. So, when an executive says 1000 lb, my eyebrows move. Again, the 4 passenger capacity of the business model does not realistically match a design goal of 1000 lbs . And, aircraft manufacturers embellish the performance capabilities of their designs. Proceed with caution.

From a purely engineering perspective these guys have hit it out of the park I loved the technical talk about the motor's and batteries absolutely fantastic. I have seen all the current designs and Joby are extremely innovative and have also future proofed the Aircraft with the swappable batteries. I have faith that the overall design works exceptionally well and would love to take a ride one day. It must be nice to have the backing of Toyota to get the aircraft production ready. 😎👍

The experience needed to succeed comes from trying and these folks are doing just that. This vehicle doesn't really matter as much as the need of it making ppl money. I would make battery's intercangebal to like Dewalt tools. This would solve quick transition per trip so no down time. Then I would inclosed props with screen to protect against birds or minor impact to other drones. A bolistic parachute is a must in the event of powere failure (powerless landings don't have to be fatal, keep insurance down) Congratulations to opening a trillion dollar market!

This is interesting. I know Joby is posting some good numbers for an all electric VTOL but I think they will inevitably have to go with a hybrid system for much longer range. A Toyota hydrogen power system could be the key.

They may be already doing that. Getting an aircraft to production is no mean task. Making money as a commercial service will help them to build investor confidence and move from protoype stage. The future is brighter given battery technology is evolving rapidly. Hydrogen power for aviation may be something Toyota may consider given the failure in Mira which is their hydrogen fuel system based car.

Throw AI into the mix to control in-bound and out-bound flights with current air traffic. Precision and safety will be enhanced considerably when the aircraft will be used as an "Uber - AIr" service. I'm already looking past the air taxi and towards emergency services. Like a med-flight being able to land a lot closer to a scene; high rise evacuation; Search and Rescue. Possibly air armadas of JAs in and out of landing zones coordinating with each other so flight time and victim to emergency services time are reduced. I'm just really excited to be here at this time witness the dawn of commercial electric aviation. Let's do this!

Um, I'd differ with you on that. First of all, eVTOL aircraft are ALL new. Hardly any standards. You can have an emotional feeling that Joby is 'light years' ahead, however, that is not possible to know because of the state of the art of these vehicles. MAAAANY companies who exist and will exist in this market-space WILL fail to succeed and disappear into history. WAAAAAy too soon to call any eVTOL 'lightyears ahead'.

This is very interesting. Evtol taxi services V autonomous car taxis🤔🤔 also auromous taxis having access to Borring Machine tunnel networks. I think private takis Evtol but mass transit this can only be done with cars sine it is door-to-door as well. Evtol does not need anywhere near the same level of AI to navigate and fly an Evtol so anyone can just hop into one without needing to learn how to fly them.

no. it doesn't have control surfaces to steer. the props spinning at different speeds controls it and if they stop they become big parachutes full of drag. the wings are so small it would fall strait down. its heavy for its size.

Joby’s aircraft fits into Part 23 airworthiness standards from a size, scale, and weight perspective. “We can glide on the wing. We can takeoff and land from runways, like a conventional airplane.

If its in a vtol mode it uses tve rotors for 100% of the lift. In the event of total electrical power failure then theres no autorotation capability you simply drop like a rock. Thats why im more into jaunt aviation evtol but I like Joby alot still.
