Marina and Ulay started an intense love story in the 70s, performing art out of the van they lived in. When they felt the relationship had run its course, they decided to walk the Great Wall of China, each from one end, meeting for one last big hug in the middle and never seeing each other again. retrospective Marina performed ‘The Artist Is Present’ as part of the show, a minute of silence with each stranger who sat in front of her. Ulay arrived without her knowing it and this is what happened

I didn't want to be the guy who starts a sentence with actually, especially 8 years after your comment, but actually they had prepared this performance 8 years prior to doing it while they were still going strong, but the Chinese government took so long to allow them to do it that in the time it took for them to get China's approval, their relationship plummeted. Anyway, this performance the Artist is Present always makes me cry.

Not true....Marina and Ulay saw each other plenty of times after their goodbyes at the great wall of China, she talks about her in her book, which I'm reading. Ulay was flown in to this performance at Marina's request. Also, Ulay took her to court to get more money for their performance work shortly after this performance ended. She talks about all this in "Walk through Walls".

Marina and Ulay were partners in art and lovers in life for 10 years or so in their youth. They ended their relationship in 1988, and they haven't seen each other since until the weeks leading up to this exhibit in MoMA. Ulay visited Marina's home before the performance, but she didn't expect to see him again on the opening day of her exhibit. He went through the gallery and got in line like everyone else. It totally surprised her.

Love in the time of social media: I just managed to write to a man I loved 20 years ago. We were together very little time, he had long planned to go abroad on business and I had to go back to finish my studies. But he was handsome and possibly the sweetest man I'd ever met. After he left, I wondered countless times where he had gone and "what if....". He answered to me, with the same sweet kindness I remember. Today he is happily married, as I am. But I have never really forgotten him and I wish I could see him again, even if only for an hour.

Truly beautiful. Connecting on this level is what everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime. This demonstrates that no matter how good something is, that unless you work at it to keep it it isn't guaranteed to work. However, some things are just meant to be.

She is showing emotion and crying as if seeing a long lost lover each time someone sits down. That is Art in its truest form.
