Marina and Ulay started an intense love story in the 70s, performing art out of the van they lived in. When they felt the relationship had run its course, they decided to walk the Great Wall of China, each from one end, meeting for one last big hug in the middle and never seeing each other again. retrospective Marina performed ‘The Artist Is Present’ as part of the show, a minute of silence with each stranger who sat in front of her. Ulay arrived without her knowing it and this is what happened

I didn't want to be the guy who starts a sentence with actually, especially 8 years after your comment, but actually they had prepared this performance 8 years prior to doing it while they were still going strong, but the Chinese government took so long to allow them to do it that in the time it took for them to get China's approval, their relationship plummeted. Anyway, this performance the Artist is Present always makes me cry.

Not true....Marina and Ulay saw each other plenty of times after their goodbyes at the great wall of China, she talks about her in her book, which I'm reading. Ulay was flown in to this performance at Marina's request. Also, Ulay took her to court to get more money for their performance work shortly after this performance ended. She talks about all this in "Walk through Walls".

I would've liked to be the woman after Ulay. Catching her after that intense moment. Sharing with her the feeling of what just happened. Being the first face she sees after being shaken. I am sure there was an intense connection and she remembers the woman's face as much as his.

I think the part of this that touched me the most is how she tries so hard at the end to compose herself to continue her art but she has to keep closing her eyes. You can tell that she is still so in love with him.

This proves that 'performance art' is legit and can be extremely powerful for both the artist(s) and the spectators who get a glimpse into their souls through the performance.

Marina and Ulay were partners in art and lovers in life for 10 years or so in their youth. They ended their relationship in 1988, and they haven't seen each other since until the weeks leading up to this exhibit in MoMA. Ulay visited Marina's home before the performance, but she didn't expect to see him again on the opening day of her exhibit. He went through the gallery and got in line like everyone else. It totally surprised her.

I learned about this performance from an art history textbook. I went to KZbin to satisfy my curiosity. I didn't think I would cry. The language of gestures, eyes, and tiny facial muscle movements told more than words. I am impressed. It is a heartbreaking moment full of love and empathy ❤

Love in the time of social media: I just managed to write to a man I loved 20 years ago. We were together very little time, he had long planned to go abroad on business and I had to go back to finish my studies. But he was handsome and possibly the sweetest man I'd ever met. After he left, I wondered countless times where he had gone and "what if....". He answered to me, with the same sweet kindness I remember. Today he is happily married, as I am. But I have never really forgotten him and I wish I could see him again, even if only for an hour.

Truly beautiful. Connecting on this level is what everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime. This demonstrates that no matter how good something is, that unless you work at it to keep it it isn't guaranteed to work. However, some things are just meant to be.

This is the most beautiful thing ever, and I need to just watch this when I need a reminder 🤗. I can see the hurt, the passion, the love, that look of just don't speak cause I can already read you & feel you! Noone truly needs words, we are bound by energies & connections!

I find it funny that people are saying "is this what art has come to/become?" She us doing something that has been done cor 50+ years! Shes a performance artist. She is showing emotion and crying as if seeing a long lost lover each time someone sits down. That is Art in its truest form. Its not a painting or a sculpture, its true love and emotion, thats what Art is. She did this everyday for 7 1/2 hours for 3 months.
