It's amazing how we start off with only Marianne's head in the shot, she is the painter, in control. Heloise's shot is wide, exposing most of her, the muse under the eyes of the artist. But at the end, Marianne is left feeling vulnerable and exposed, with a wide shot of the painter, as she no longer feels like she has a power over the muse. Heloise's shot is now focused on her head, her face, with a triumphant smile, feeling less vulnerable now

interesting to note that, by this point in the film, it's a fact marianne has already acknowledged within herself, her attraction to heloise (the previous scene is heloise asking marianne about love, a moment marianne later admits was the first time she wanted to kiss heloise/knew she loved her). here, marianne is actually putting herself in a very vulnerable position, but to protect herself, she uses her role as the painter to justify her interest in heloise. when heloise counters marianne's observations with a few of her own, she's returning her affection. in addition to being knocked down a peg, marianne doesn't expect this, and so she's in disbelief by the scene's end.

Just found this film while stumbling through Hulu. Possibly the most beautiful film I have seen and these women are all this film needs. Loved how they all looked out and after each other. Oppression dictates what will happen but we get to live these days with these women without having to see it til the end. What a Love story and so genius to let them make their own rhythm and no score. Their chemistry is the beat. So easy and common to have that rushing emotional music when Marianne sprints to the beach to ask Heloise to forgive her and to tell her her Mother is coming 💔. But we only get their music and portrayal of heartbreak. Nothing else was needed. Love this film. ❤️

Just saw it for the third time and this scene is my favorite still. Can someone explain why Heloise wanted Marianne to paint her recreating the abortion scene. Also, why didn’t Marianne tell her how she felt . Heloise was begging her to explain her heart but was she afraid. It wound have still been up to Heloise to make the choice . My third question was why did Heloise want to go in the water ? Anyone can shed some light I’ll appreciate it very much. This movie was so masterfully written and acted in every where with so much symbolism, I would love to talk to the director to have her explain those questions for me.

B52 BOMBER Yes I was wondering about this too
@RP_Williams4 жыл бұрын
"why Heloise wanted Marianne to paint her recreating the abortion scene" - because 'sorority' is one of the main themes of the film...this film isn't just about the passion between Heloise and Marianne, but about the sisterhood between all 4 main women characters (and how they closely relate and understand each other's plight). "why didn’t Marianne tell her how she felt" - because of the time they lived in, on top of the risk and vulnerability and humiliation of possible rejection (or even regret, for making a 'forbidden' and dangerous move). "My third question was why did Heloise want to go in the water ?" - because she felt trapped in her new life, and swimming represented some freedom to her. All this from a hetro dude, by the way lol...this movie fascinated me, as while i found all the women sexually attractive (even the mother lol), that seemed so very much secondary (or tertiary) compared to how i related to the characters, and wanted them to be happy and safe. You should see The Lighthouse (if you haven't already) which is like the polar male opposite to this film (there's even deep Greek mythology involved in both films). Two best films of 2019.
@b52bomber234 жыл бұрын
DeathToTheDictators Thanks so much for the explanation because this film has so much depth and layers that I’m constantly trying to figure different things out. I certainly see now that you’ve explained it from this perspective and it’s amazing . This coming from a hetro dude is wonderful and I’m very impressed that you picked up on it. This is my favorite movie if all time and I can watch it over and over again and see a different message and meaning . Wow, I’m still in awe of the brilliance that the director brought with her writing and direction of this portrayal of deep and everlasting love.

@@b52bomber23 Hey, no problem! I'm glad you enjoyed the film as much as i did (i actually relate so much to Marianne, being a single 43 year old who once found 'true love' but it didn't work out...long story lol. All this time i've been Orpheus, and i didn't even know it until this film!). And check out The Lighthouse...like i said, the male opposite to this film (and shot/filmed just as beautifully, and in black and white, no less! Best performance of Willem Dafoe's career, and that's saying something) ....both deal so much about gender (and the power and role we hold, in our genders)....there's (slight) homo-erotic tones in it too (again, Greek mythology, as it's somewhat a take on the Prometheus story....those old Greeks were very progressive, for over 2000 years ago lol). Both these films can be watched again and again, and you'll always get more out of them.
@b52bomber234 жыл бұрын
DeathToTheDictators You’re awesome and thanks for the recommendation. I’m a movie buff and see movies a minimum of two a week but never saw The Lighthouse . However, I’ll try to see it when I’m off and let you know. It would be nice to see something similar but from a man’s perspective. It sounds crazy but I wish that Heloise did see Marianne when she went to hear the Orchestra play Marianne’s favorite song and also it’s the first song she heard besides organ music. Isn’t it fascinating that she went alone , probably because of her deep love for Marianne which she still has but wanted that private moment to relive the experience all to herself. I think it’s why she was able to be honest with her feelings and show them in an honest manner. That was amazing and left me so sad because I think that the director wanted the audience to wish they could have been together . Man this movie is so real. Well thanks and let me know what you think. I’m glad you at least experienced something like it😘

Here you are :) MARIANNE : Je n’arrive pas à vous faire sourire.

Same. I was all tingly. Just saw the movie. Fucking amazing. Kinda wanna go again, but movie theater that plays it is an annoying distance away. But yea like wow amazing movie, great script, acting, cinematography, might be the best movie from 2019. It between this, Parasite, and The Farewell imo.

@LaisAceTristao3 жыл бұрын
Marianne thinks when she is painting she is the one doing all the looking. But Heloise is looking back. It unsettles Marianne because for now on, she knows she is also been seen while she sees. The phrase points it out even geographically: if I am in you vision field while you paint, then you are in my vision field too. It puts both of them in a equal situation, where both are, simultaneously, the "objects" been looked at and the "subjects" doing the looking. (Sorry if my English is bad)

but the equality of their physical position goes beyond their relationship of painter and model, and translates into their relationship as fledging lovers. Marianne starts as confident and experienced, she is like the teacher in this game of love, and Héloïse the naive student. But at that moment, Héloïse shows she is able to observe and understand how Marianne functions, and teaches her a lesson. Now, who is the student and who is the teacher? Marianne was using her experience and confidence to hide her vulnerabilities and feelings but she’s been uncovered. The power dynamic has reversed in that scene and Marianne‘s new position of vulnerability is what enables their love to finally be expressed.

I love the analysis as well, I'm learning new things. SPOILER alert: There were two things from the film I did not fully understand. Can someone please let me know about the swimming dialogue, what does Heloise mean when she says, "I meant I don't know if I can swim? How does she not know that? So I am thinking there must be something I'm missing. The other thing is when Heloise asks Marianne to tell her when was the first time Heloise wanted to kiss her, she said when they were at the table, for the life of me I do not know the hidden message that I missed from Heloise asking Marianne, "How does it feel?" What in that conversation explains Heloise's desire to kiss Marianne? I seriously don't understand it, can anyone let me know? I would be so grateful.

Who's here after lessons from the screenplay?
@skullsaintdead2 жыл бұрын
I love this so much. As young women, we are so often 'looked at' by men and our non-verbal cues are ignored. They seem to think they're the ones in control, watching and silently judging us, sexualising or objectifying our bodies. But, just as they're getting comfortable, you shoot a look back, a straight stare of defiance that catches them off-guard. Then you lock eyes and we both smile wryly. He thinks we're smiling because we're interested; I mean, he just got a 'sexy' look from a pretty girl! But really, we're smiling because we know what he's thinking and we know that we're worth more than a man's appreciation. But with women, when you look at women, as a woman yourself, there's no fear, no sexualising, no power games. We're equals. It's liberating.
@lavlinalavender2 жыл бұрын
So true , after watching this movie, i really craved love from a woman just to feel that liberation
@BigAndTall1020 Жыл бұрын
Within your analysis seems to be a dark judgement and simplification of men. Especially closing with "We're equals" which seems to be only attainable with other women. I hope you meet some men who break the mold for you.

@@BigAndTall1020 If all you took from my comment was an attack on yourself and other men, then this is the very problem I highlighted. Thank your for illustrating it again.

@@skullsaintdead Can you please explain further how my comment exemplifies the point you made in your initial post? I guess I am naive or just missing the point. I am genuinely curious about your perspective. I loved this film and was surprised to read your analysis.
@skullsaintdead Жыл бұрын
@@BigAndTall1020 Why would you assume my perspective should shift - and why should it shift because of a man? Why wouldn't your perspective shift - and shift because of a woman? Perhaps it is because we live in a male dominated society, where even a comment simply stating the nature & impact of the male gaze is met with outright dismissal by a man. I'd expected a comment like yours (e.g. "this criticism of the male gaze is an attack on me - a man!" - well, not if you're not part of the problem, not if you're respectful - it shouldn't of ever offended you; it should of been met with understanding and empathy). Women share a bond, it's far less likely that we'll be hurt by a woman and near on zero likelihood we'd be raped by her. I suppose our intimacy, our whispers and glances, might make a man suspicious or jealous. That's his problem, not ours - indeed, he cannot attain this level of closeness because he can hurt us. That will differ from person to person, but for me and my closest friends, we'd be in agreement - you cannot let a man get that close, women can come as close as you want. As an attempted rape survivor, I'm not going to advocate for blindly assuming the good in men, when I (and so many women) have seen how easy it is for men to ignore non-verbal cues, body language & even flatly refusing to accept 'No!'. They do what they want and we (1/6 women are SA survivors, all women are survivors of sexism and harassment) have to live with the consequences. He will get away with it too - only 0.5% of rapes ever end with jail time. Wake up.
