Keith's perspective on Lucy's desire for home and family I believe is correct. Her father died when she was very small and they lived with their grandfather. Then tragedy struck when the gun incident injured a neighbor child and the family lost their home. Clearly it was a trauma for all that defined Lucy's life.

This is the one I have been waiting for! I loved this home and every minute of your presentation. I have lived in CT all my life and can really relate to this home. Although my home growing up was much smaller and not as grand as this home, my parents bought it in 1965 brand new when I was 7 years old. We had the hardwood floors, bay windows and braided rugs. My mom decorated it in the same style as this home at the time called "colonial style". I kept their maple end tables and coffee table in my living room to this day. I have always been fascinated with homes and decorating, even as a child. This country home was a "dream home" for me. PS--I loved all the escaped chicks in the den, LOL!! ❤

Hi Marina, I have a funny story for you, while redecorating my 18 year old daughter's bedroom I became obsessed with decorating her room with the painting "Prima Ballerina" by Edgar Degas but I didn't understand why. I found a beautiful gilded frame, oil copy of "Prima Ballerina" for her room along with another one. Then one day I saw your episode of the NY apartment and low and behold bingo there was the oil painting of "Prima Ballerina" a painting I must have seen in Lucy's apartment my whole childhood (I was always obsessed with it, the painting) , it all clicked during that episode and now again of the country house! I love that Lucy took this masterpiece along with her to her country home, that I too always felt was my dream home some day . Anyway, I am so relieved I figured that out thanks to your channel pointing that out to me. See it just goes to show how things can leave an impression on you as a child and you don't know why - too funny! Another wonderful vlog please research King of Queens. They have a great house but the show is far from vintage...

When I was growing up, my mother told me that her grandmother (my great grandmother) designed the country house for the I Love Lucy show. My great grandfather worked for the studios building movie sets. They were originally from Texas and came to Los Angeles in approximately 1920. California became a state in 1850 so it was a fairly new state when they got here. Somehow, this video popped into my feed. I never met my great grandmother, and it was really cool to see this little piece of her marked in history. I watched the shows in black-and-white as a child but seeing it in color brings it to life. I sent it to my mother and she said it made her homesick. We talked about seeing the same pieces of furniture in either her house or my grandmother's house! 😊 I believe my mother said that my great grandmother decorated the set for free. This was right after the depression and my grandmother told me that they paid the doctor with eggs lol. Maybe she got a few chickens lol. By the way, my grandmother told me that during the depression her mom would take down the curtains and make three beautiful dresses for her and her sisters. As she put it, they had the most beautiful dresses in the neighborhood. Now I can see what they kind of looked like because she made those curtains too! Thanks for the amazing video!😊

I’m now 73, and during Lucy’s show I, too, fell in love with the country home. When I got married, my husband and I had a business where we went into people’s homes. One day we had a job in a home that looked very much like this, right down to the split, Dutch doors, paneled walls, stone fireplace and bookcases. The woman’s husband in this home had just died, unfortunately. She wanted to go back to her old hometown and asked if we knew anyone who was looking to buy a home. Because we were just starting out and didn’t have much money, we laughed and said we would and somehow we came up with the money. My Ethan Allen furniture looked like this. My kitchen range, though, looked like Samantha’s in Bewitched, and…my dishes were almost the same. The company was Franciscan Earthenware; it had two patterns, Ivy, like Lucy’s, and Apple, which I had. The shapes were identical, only the hand-painted pattern differed; green Ivy vines, or bright, red apples. I guess I watched too much TV as a child. We lived in that home for more than 20 years and still miss it. No other home felt right. Thanks for the memories!

I live in an old colonial style home built in 1850. It’s more of a “This Old House” house, always in need of repairs. I love the Early American architecture and would love to have it look some day as special as Lucy’ country home.

The way you recreate these homes, I always feel like I could live there. It looks so much better than it did on screen. I love the choices you made and I wouldn't change anything. TY for the recreation and sharing it with us.

See, their New York apartment from the earlier seasons was always the more popular and recognizable home in the show- respectably so, but I always loved their Country styled house. Considering this, I very much appreciate that you’ve explored the home in this virtual way!

@DebbiePochy - as a son of the beautiful Nutmeg State, I couldn't agree with you more. I LOVE those Connecticut episodes - Most folks don't care for the Ricardos' move to Connecticut - but it is interesting to note that the show had its longest laugh in "Lucy Does the Tango" - SIX MINUTES - so long that CBS had to edit the audience's laughter. I also read that Lucille Ball personally oversaw the set decoration. It's beautiful in black and white - better still in color - thank you, Ms. Coates, for your spectacular work.

Great job in illustrating this set design. Having an architectural and architectural history background, the geometric angles I am not sure during that time would have been there. They would likely be more 90-degree angles among farmhouse or colonial style homes. But of course, I understand that these angles were for perspective and set design purposes. But I love the concept and design you produced, and you did an amazing job. It is so cool to watch. Something about I Love Lucy and Lucy Desi Comedy Hour, I started watching these, of course were re-runs by the time I was them in the 90s, but interestingly, generations after generations of children, still love this show. Even my little girl in the mid 2010s, absolutely loves the show. I to loved them all, but my favorite is when they moved to the country home for sure. And with my architectural background, I just love this home, and of course these episodes and stories. Thank you for designing this, as well as providing some of the filming and stories behind the episodes. Thank you again!

One thing I was always fascinated with has to do with how both set and story depict the economy of the home. On television, it seems like the characters are sitting on mountains of cash. Notice how even though Ricky palled at Lucy’s lavish expenditure, he didn’t make her take any of it back. I know I’ve said it before, but I so appreciate the careful research you do in order to complete these sets. This home definitely has “early 1900’s east coast vibes.” I think set designers are so clever how they create these homes to make the viewer really believe these shows are actually being shot in their context. For Ricky & Lucy, it was Connecticut. For 3’s Company, it was Santa Monica/LA. For Frasier it was Seattle. I love how set designers fool us.

This was neato-o! I guess it was another season but the back door that Fred & Ethel used from their cottage I thought was farmhouse door. Maybe I'm just thinking that because it would have fit. And I think that the den, being that the living room/dining room was so large so there was plenty of area for family & guests - the den would have been Ricky's retreat & office, where he could work at home away from Lucy's shenanigans. I'm sure too that the set design had Lucy's fingerprints all over it, having read the book Lucy Jr. says she found in a hatbox after she'd passed away Lucy did indeed no matter how important the career was ALWAYS wanted the marriage & family life top drawer priority in their lives & worked like crazy to achieve that, in fact quite making life a bit difficult for those who didn't get it. That's my interpretation of how things were. Anyway, I loved the tour. The WAX 🌷 bed was pictured!! Lucy's competitive nature shows once again! Looking forward to their snazzy Hollywood digs too. I always thought that suite was sweet - even though I love the traditional 50s look too, which I guess NOW it is. Nice to see Keith as well & hear his memories, and I appreciate his kind words on Desi Arnez who often isn't given the credit he deserves for his vast contributions to the show. Nice to hear that Mr.Frawley was nice to him as well, you usually hear he was nothing but disagreeable. Thanks Keith! 🐤🐥😁

@christopherleodaniels72032 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing about Keith’s statements on Mr. Frawley. But it tracks with a TV Archives video, on KZbin, with Barry Livingston speaking about working with Frawley on ‘My Three Sons’. He described Frawley as hilariously grumpy, who drank his lunch to the point where they’d appoint him to go get Frawley back on set, and he always had great bawdy stories and used very inappropriate language around them. And, of course, the boys absolutely LOVED him, and it was mutual. By contrast, Livingston described Bill Demarest, who replaced Frawley but had conquered his demons, as just grouchy, very disciplined, and not much fun at all.
