Listening to this whilst mourning the relationship with my mother. I know this isn't the meaning for this song, but it's helping me grieve. Having one parent left who is a narcissist and unemotional is hard, even more so when you're moving to the other side of the country and she doesn't even try to come see you. This song is helping me work through some very necessary feelings I've had of a lost childhood and mother daughter relationship, whilst making a new life with my boyfriend who is everything I could ever need. Honestly, I relate to this song about my dad, so I understand you. He was absent and negligent, and although I always knew the love was there, it was never expressed in a fulfilling way. I can't believe how perfectly this song sums up my experience in my last relationship. My partner definitely took me and our relationship for granted, not trying hard to change harmful aspects of their behaviour until far too late. I don't think they assumed I would leave either, but I finally did. We are friends now and I am grateful for that but in a lot of ways it felt like a one sided relationship where I was walking on eggshells, feeling very unappreciated. I wish I had heard this last year, it would have made me feel less alone in my decision making. Listening now a year later, my life is completely different to how I was when this song came out.
