To piggyback off this, I wonder if this is to reference the duality behind Dorothy as this sweet innocent character, and then the absolute hell the actress went though as a child star. Given the subject matter, I think that is definitely a pointed statement at that aspect of Hollywood.

@Aston not that it should be a trend but maybe they meant that nowadays more artists dare talking about these topics in their works. it's very rare to hear about ecology and economics in songs, and it should be mentioned for often, cause a lot of artists emulate social issues but still make millions bucks and reinforce social inequalities

People need to look out of their bubbles and lives just for a couple of seconds and observe how so many on this planet are unjustly treated by systems, institutions, social constructions, and literal cultures that benefit and serve only a rich, powerful few. If you think war, increasing worldwide poverty, racism, ethnocentrism, are just annoying, then I’m sorry, you’re part of the problem of letting society and everything else raise generations upon generations of nescient people that are literally only raised to work you to death (and to serve the people at the top’spockets)

I had to think about "Oh No" after this video because the line "capitalism made us poor" reminded of her in the dollar bill dress with money raining onto her in "Oh No". That song in general, while seeming so happy, is pretty dark, especially considering her state of mind during the whole Family Jewels Era, as many others have pointed out. And I feel like the line in Purge the Poison describes this song pretty well! As far as I remember, from what I've read at the time Marina was out for success and not in a good place. Capitalism made her poor, but not in a monetary sense, more in a metaphorical one, as she always felt like she's the worst, not enough and not achieving her goals, at the time that could very well be meant in regards to her career. And I feel like that's true for a lot of people who desperately chase after money, as they feel that they find no value in themselves or their existence without it and that just makes a lot of people miserable. Especially when through social media you can continuously compare yourself to other people, even if only subconscious and see that they are way younger than you and more successful already. We all know that social media isn't reflecting reality 100% and people often make things look better than they truly are, but still comparing yourself to someone like that can make you feel like you failed at life and in a way make you poor in a figurative sense

Here are the lyrics ! Hopefully it will be useful to some people ! (Amazing song btw) All my friends are witches and we live in Hollywood Mystical bitches making our own sisterhood While society is falling, we are quietly reforming Protecting the planet, healing our own damage Quarantined all alone, Mother Nature's on the phone "What have you been doing? Don't forget I am your home Virus come, fires burn until human beings learn From every disaster, you are not my master" Need to purge the poison, show us our humanity All the bad and good, racism and misogyny Nothing's hidden anymore, capitalism made us poor God, forgive America for every single war Need to purge the poison from my system Until human beings listen Tell me, "Who do you think you are?" It's your own decision But your home is now your prison You forgot that, without me, you won't go far Need to purge the poison from my system Until human beings listen Tell me who do you think you are? 2007 when size zero was the rage⁣⁣⁣ Britney shaved her head and All we did was call her crazed⁣⁣⁣ Harvey Weinstein’s gone to jail⁣⁣⁣ ‘Me Too’ went on to unveil⁣⁣⁣ Truth and all its glory⁣⁣ ⁣ The ending of a story⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ It’s a new world order⁣, everything just falls away⁣ Our life as we knew it now belongs to yesterday Inside all the love and hate we can now regenerate Stopped how we'd been living every single day Need to purge the poison from my system Until human beings listen Tell me, "Who do you think you are?" It's your own decision But your home is now your prison You forgot that, without me, you won't go far Need to purge the poison from my system Until human beings listen Tell me, "Who do you think you are?" I just want a world where I can see the feminine We only make up one-quarter of the government Like an angel gone to hell Cast the moon under our spell Owning female power, taking back what's ours Earth is like a white rose Quiet cloud of petals fold A place so corrupt where Angel flesh and blood is sold The feminine is born as new Started with a diamond dew Solitude was coming, everybody knew Need to purge the poison from my system Until human beings listen Tell me, "Who do you think you are?" It's your own decision But your home is now your prison You forgot that, without me, you won't go far Need to purge the poison from my system Until human beings listen Tell me, "Who do you think you are?" I absolutely love that no one can recreate her sound, and the sound of this reminds me so much more of older Marina and I feel like she’s combining her true self (since in all of her old songs she was obviously battling with her confidence) with her old Electra Heart Marina days and I’m LIVING FOR IT! I feel like THIS is the true Marina, still a bit of that Electra Heart girl; deep yet presented in a shallow manner, relatable and heart wrenching. Then there is the family jewels; raw, deep, not as glamorous. Finally Froot, fun, still not shallow and not all of the songs are happy but a much more optimistic, poppy sounding album. I feel like maybe she’s finally coming into her own, maybe getting rid of the Diamonds was her way of getting rid of that lack of confidence that showed before.
