Aquaculture is a very potentially important resource, but it needs to be done correctly in a way that doesn't harm the wild populations. In my personal opinion we would be better off not eating salmon, tuna, cod and other heavily fished species and instead turn to freshwater species that can be grown in contained ponds.

What causes the lice in fish farms? They left a huge portion of educational information out. Just a short 3min video saying "no lice is great for the salmon" didn't educate how the lice outbreak got so bad in the farms, how they were transferred to non farm waters, how do you control the lice outbreak once noticed. A Looot of very useful educational information was excluded. I consider this a fail on NowThis for educational purposes, just click bait with emotional music playing in background.

@@plaidpanda Truly a terrible video of education, great video to get sympathy views from title but otherwise garbage. They even give the wrong message that the fish farms were issue and are bad... which is a gross statement, most a beneficial when operating properly and good government oversight... seems to me like these farms had terrible regulation by staff or government for checking which caused the issues. They said there was a limit of 3 lice per fish from early 2000's and that all the farms exceeded that number... so did the government come and halt operations? were the farms fined till problem was fixed? Do they have to participate in some sort of restoration program from contributing? Sooo many important unanswered questions.

@shawnharris2242 3 жыл бұрын
@@sapphirelight748 doesn't necessarily have to do with large groupings, the food they use for the fish could be an aspect providing the environmental criteria for the lice population to explode rapidly. They really should have gone into what caused the lice and why it wasn't controlled via government fines, scaling down operations, etc.

@drg8687
@drg8687 3 жыл бұрын
Salmon farms create an unnatural density of salmon populations which allows the lice to not just survive but postively thrive, like mold on bread. The lice population becomes so high even the salmon not in the farms are infected. It's like a plague. Spread them out and the lice is contained.
@summer-7968
@summer-7968 2 жыл бұрын
@@drg8687 And when the juvenile salmon swim past the salmon farms, they are infected with the free-swimming juvenile sea lice sourced from those farms as well. An adult salmon might be able to withstand that number of sea lice, but the juveniles with their tiny bodies can't.

@Gahundledack
@Gahundledack 3 жыл бұрын
The fish farms provide a steady supply of food for sea lice and other parasites, which contributes to a large standing population in the region that the wild fish migrate through. When the fish farm is removed, there is not a source of food for sea lice when the fish are not migrating, so they either die off or move to...bluer pastures? There are probably some sea lice in the area, but because there isn't a large captive population of salmon to feed off, the population is much much smaller.

It’s like factory farming, but for fish. When animals like pigs and cows and chickens are crowded together, disease is rampant, which is why so many are injected with antibiotics. It’s unnatural for animals, humans included, to live so close to each other.
