I went to the ball with my boyfriend this year, and they had a special guest come in. He was actually a veteran who'd served at iwo jima and tarawa. His stories were absolutely the coolest thing all night and he was so sweet. He was there when the flags were raised and the bells were rang. It was one of those stories that gives you goosebumps and everyone's attention is completely on him. According to my boyfriend "he gave me the firmest handshake I've ever had. He looked you dead in the eyes and kept that tight grip until you let go." And that when they all grouped around him he told even more stories. Everyone was starstruck and wanted to buy him drinks 😅

I would be confused and could only stand in shock trying to understand what I should do being a seven year old . I have the highest respect for him and loved him dearly, I would like to say ,I Didn't think he cared so much for me,at that point in my life people were just yelling at us . I think we were the generation that seems to have ruined everything that the greatest generation had achieved. And I will make this point..BY every measure and by all accountability they were and will always be the greatest generation of Americans ever. God bless you and may he take you to a blessed place in his care.

@@markg898 Salute to your late father, and a deep appreciation for him and everyone else out of that generation that fought in WWII. Later generations (I'd be lumped into the millennials just by age not ideals) do not hold up to the group that lived through and fought World War II and Korea. Just a different breed all around that we that came after should look up to and learn something from.

Also… as a cook in the Army who has to feed Marines because they are stationed here… They are VERY respectful, and whenever we give them mermite (basically hot chow for the field) they bring everything back clean, which, no one else does. We still wash it because it’s mandatory, but that’s a very kind gesture no one asked of them, they just do out of respect. 10/10 recommend as customers… unless you serve alcohol. There are two people you DO NOT fuck with in the Marines. The Cooks and the Corpsmen. If the Marines you were feeding were a Victor Unit then they had their own cooks just no field mess. Often times when doing TAD field training they'll simply eat MREs and crayons because cooks train just like grunts so they're not training to cook outside [they already know how]. If you were nice enough to give them chow then they will most definitely return your Cambros clean.

@@themisfitbrigade We were out of BP Chupultapec near BP Tinian. Ubaydi, Iraq. We were gonna hook up with a Stryker column and go play "knock-knock" in some little mud hut ville. We would hook up at their place. I forget the name of the base. My task in this operation would be EPW duty. Bag n tag bad guys. Why does a Marine cook need to be involved with Cordon & Knocks operations? Because I wanted to. Also the Company Gunz was an old POG who also liked to be outside the wire and he was like my friend. The First Team ain't no pussies. [1/7] The Army was running a company sized BP not unlike our own. We got there before dawn. Breakfast time! The Gunz told the grunts to hit the chow hall. He told me and my padawan to go check out the food situation. Asses the galley and help if necessary. We didn't want to be "bad guests". So we did. The galley was an old MKT trailer set up. Even though it's Army gear I knew how to use it. I actually had one my previous deployment. I get up with the Army cook and I walk through. Absolutely the most disgusting thing I'd ever seen in food service. The flies! Rotting food, old grease, JP8 everywhere! I lost my shit and shut down the galley. I put my Marine on the Army cook and I ran into the mess hall screaming "don't eat that shit! Spit it out!". I was knocking trays from Marine hands. You'd think that would get my ass kicked but my guys trusted me. The Gunz was like "what the fuck Whitey!?!?". I took him out back to the galley. Gunny was horrified. We ate MREs for the rest of that operation.

Semper Fi boys! My favorite marine story was from a family friend who was on iwo jima. He said a marine bulldozer got landed, and came under fire from a Japanese light tank. First round clanged off the blade, and our tracked jarhead thought he should keep the theme, and maneuvered to keep the dozer blade aimed at the tank. He bounced several rounds off before flanking the tank, rolling it over, and giving it a shove off a cliff into the ocean. USMC: able to outgun you even when they're unarmed.

We had one of our usual talks about sports, the corn growth, general gossip, ect. I had done this with him several times and loved just to keep him company, the only thing missing was the mail I'd usually bring. The only thing I wish I had told him was that my wife and I were going to be married, even in hospice I know that would have put a smile on his face. After he past we were cleaning the house and we came across his flag, I don't know if anyone wanted it, but I gave them zero chance. Next thing you know, you wake up next to a 70 year old man with a hunting rifle and a 23 year old with an AR, belly down on a beach. Above you looms a million dollar mansion. You vaguely remember the Marines chanting something before you passed out. Strategically Transfer Equipment to Alternate Locations. The old man fixes a rusty bayonet to the front of his rifle before charging up the hill yelling "get some!" The young man, still in his dress blues, looks at you and smiles before shaking his head, grabbing you by the back of your shirt, and lifting you to your feet. Your head is spinning, and you start to see stars when the Marine claps you on the back, pushes a pistol in your hand, and says, slurring his words "Come on civvie, you're the one who volunteered for the beer run". Edit for completion, in honor of the 248th Marine Corps Birthday

Eleanor Roosevelt's son was a Officer in the USMC. He was also a USMC Raider during WW2. Part of the Makin Island raid, where a Marine shot down a Japanese float plane with a .51 caliber Boyes Rifle. Remember, back then the USMC got everything the US Army didn't want anymore. Apparently the Army had gotten some British Antitank rifles, the Boyes Rifle, said 'meh, we've got the M2' and schlepped them over to the Marines. And since the Raiders were the bottom of the bottom, despite becoming some of the best, said 'hey, this looks big, let's take this.'

I was floored by that and worried at the same time... I was going to have to patch them all up! It ended pretty quick when he realized the gravity of the situation. I love my Marines and miss them all, I hope that every one of them is having a WONDERFUL birthday and are at least a little responsible, your doc's will appreciate it! Semper Fi ladies and gentlemen!

Love the Marines. Was tasked to do a talk & walk with a group of Forward Observer types. (Air/Artillery/Naval Gun fires) I'm a Captain (USAF) & B-52 Nav. The senior Marine, and the one tasked with speaking for the group, was a Lance Corporal. Took them through the "Petting Zoo". Training versions of everything a B-52 can load. When encouraged (finally ordered) to go hands on with the mockups, they were kids in a candy store. Dumb bombs to JDAM/JSOW/JASSM to Cruise missiles to Sea Mines. What was even better was explaining what a bomber brings to a fight. "These are Mark 82s (500lb GP bomb). How many do you call in normally on a strike?" "Sir! We expect 2 from an F-18. Sometimes 4 if the carrier is close." "We carry 27 of these or M117s (750 lb) internal and an additional 18 on the wings, but we normally don't carry the externals. That's where most the rest of these go." The sight of the evil grins on that pack of young, feral Marines at the thought still warms my heart. SEMPER FIDELIS

When confronted at the door by an employee, dirtbag pulled a knife and the employee let him go. As he was running out the door, he ran into 4 marines, in full dress uniform taking in Toys for tots...The story from the cops the next day said that 1 Marine had gotten a none life threatening wound, but the suspect had to be taken to the Hospital with a broken jaw , arm, leg (foot?) and many abrasions etc., because, as he was running from the store, he Tripped, over a Curb..

Sometime in the early 1980's in Rock Island, Illinois at a Toys For Tots collection /distribution, a lady asked a Marine for a new bike for her young grandson. She was shown several, made a choice, and asked the Marine to put it in her car. "Sure, ma'am, my pleasure", and out they go. She leads him to a brand new Cadillac, and unlocked the trunk. The Marine huffed, executed an about face, and marched the bike back into inventory. It was a very bleak time in the area, with many factories closing for good, and nobody had time for people with plenty, mooching from folks having it tough. Marines included.

It was my brother’s 21st birthday and he was stationed at Pendleton. I came down for a weekend of blurry memories with him and his Marine buddies. Needless to say, he was too drunk to stand/walk in short order (I don’t know if it is still in the blue light district of San Diego, but the restaurant name Dicks was awesome back then). Unfortunately, he fell in the roadway right in front of a police cruiser. Lights came on and the officer asked, “How was our day?” and did we want to “Play a prank on my him?” Also being drunk we responded that we did so the officer asked, “Want him to wake up in jail?” Quickly back tracking we said we would get him to the hotel to sober up a bit before the rest of the day. “See that you do” was the officer’s reply before also adding “But I get it” and raising his sleeve to show the Eagle Globe and Anchor. Went from thinking I was going to have to bail my brother out of jail to having a story to tell him when he woke up. Your comment of ‘One of the officers will be a Marine’ just reminded me of it, not a Marine Corps birthday story but still makes me laugh.

i am a marine brat, and proud of it. when i was growing up, i learned the star spangled banner, the marine corps hymn, and then happy birthday to you. my father dropped the coin on the bed to see if it would come back up for him to catch. if not, i made it again, and again. when i worked in a hospital, patients requested that i make their beds - said there was nothing like sliding under those sheets. my father never remembered his daughters' birthdates, but we always remembered november 10. thank you to all who make us free. semper fi - hurrah.

I’ve always been fascinated by marines all over the world, partly because I could never join our marines (I’m Dutch) because I’m almost blind in my right eye. But mostly because of the badassery. Congrats marines!

Pretty much every Marine I've met didn't have to mention they were a Marine. My coach always wore a Marine shirt, my auto tech buddy had a Marine hat and my older brother wore his fatigues around the house.

While I was in Afghanistan, the ANA (Afghan National Army) came up to us and asked us (the Marines) for the "Magic Pills" that allowed us to operate as efficiently as we do. The ANA was convinced that we were on some magic drug that kept us going while we were deployed.

My dad was in the USMC in the 90s. Just after the Gulf War and just before OEF. He never saw combat, but he did tell me that when he got to Japan after boot camp, he and his buddies divided up all their money, that they had just gotten switched over from USD with no knowledge of Japanese currency, and he ended up accidentally getting the majority of it because they miscounted and he found out how much he actually had from, I think, a random street vendor. That was probably one of the funniest Marine stories I’ve ever heard.

As french canadians, we have a reputation of being quite the party crowd (I blame that on the 7 months of grey depressing or lethal freezing temperatures we get up there). Now I want to spend a holiday down south drinking with marines. Sounds like a lotta fun!

He would probably NOT be happy with you calling him "an E5". You meant Sergeant. It is a sign of disrespect/an insult to refer to a Marine NCO (Corporal [pay grade E-4] or above) as an "E-(4-9)". This is only said about those NCO's that you do not respect as leaders. Just FYI for ya... Semper FI.

My Dad was a Marine in the First Marine division in WW2. He had to get his mother's signature to sign up in 1943, since he was only 17. He served at Pelieu, Okinawa, China briefly guarding Kai-Shieks raliways from Mao's insurgents, Inchon, and the Chosen Reservoir. Semper Fi, Marines!
