Marine Electronics: Communications at Sea , Navigation and Sailing Apps / From Sextant to Iridium Go as well as Sailboat navigation through the last 50 years!! Patrick Childress Sailing Videos #35
This is a tour of our Chart Table on our Blue water Sailboat, as we are sailing around the world on our Valiant 40. At our Nav station we have an array of marine electronics for sailing navigation and communication while we are at sea including Navionics electronic charting. Our Raymarine chartplotter and Radar, a Vespermarine AIS Transponder, Iridium GO! and Predictwind with Xgate on the IPad Pro are what we use now.
Patrick shows how he navigated his Catalina 27 Juggernaut, circumnavigating in the 1970s with no gps, using only a sextant, an RDF, and paper charts.
In 2007, we began our circumnavigation with a small Raymarine chart plotter and Tacktick wireless sailing instruments, Navionics electronic charts, with a laptop, OpenCPN and .kap charts as a backup sailboat navigation system. We used the Icom 710 SSB radio with a Pactor 3 Modem with Airmail/Winlink/Sailmail for staying in touch with other boats and our families.
Later we purchased an Ipad with the best sailing apps for navigation, and electronic charts and sailing apps including Navionics, TimeZero iboat, and Ovitalmap. But the Iridum GO! and Predictwind for communication at sea, and for getting our wind and ocean currents while sailing offshore has been a great improvement for marine navigation, communications at sea, getting weather at sea, and for our safety!

Agree. Problem is Patrick was old school. Self taught, curious and a knowledge seeker. Absolutely willing to get dirty and yet share without recourse. On our Norsea 27 we have a Standard Horizon CPF300i chart plotter (connects to depth finder), a VHF with AIS, and a compass. We do coastal cruising. Our next acquisition will be a tablet to run Open cpn and that barometer app. Didn't know tablets had that. Thanks for your videos, a no nonsense approach. You should have at least a donation link if not patreon. It's not like you are doing this as beggars your content is meaningful and rich in knowledge. It is ok to be paid to continue doing these extremely informative videos, they take time and effort and waiting for 2 years for a payoff on youtube isn't easy. Think of youtube as bonus income, not a serious income. High quality educational videos like this should be able to get funding outside of youtube's aqueous values and paybacks(tending toward advertisers rather than content providers.) The less corporations take I think the more generous you will find people to be, we aren't stupid out here and would rather direct fund. You two are so great together! Nice, calm and down to earth. Love watching your channel evolve. I too like things simple and non integrated I can’t imagine having the autopilot set to a gps system like most are installing. I’ve sailed for many years and yes, like the new systems but I love the old ways of sailing. I love feeling the boat, not some video game and kept on course to the degree. When we use the Aries offshore I’d go crazy watching for cross track error. We have your exact Vesper, and Furuno GPS. Bought gps after Y2K meltdown while cruising the UK. Only in the last four years have we moved to chart plotters. Love the iPad and our small Garmin 50. Have little patience for learning all the new systems that we never really needed in the old days. But, I suppose it keeps the mind growing. LOL Cheers!

What a fantastic video! I really enjoyed the review of the old gear through the new gear you have on board. The depth sounder is pretty cool . Watching a submerged volcanic island appear on the video screen sound amazing. I am really digging the explanations of the equipment and love the redundancy you have built into your Nav/Com electronics. That Raymarine with Navionics charting package is so cool! I like the idea of maintaining an independent redundancy with regards to the electronics and multiple software applications on the same real-time issues. An individual aberration reading can be compared to another for verification is good but I also like your idea of actually looking over the water to see a ship that is there but not registering on AIS. Good material. Like they say: It's the content that's important. The editing and the rest will improve and you'll find a simpler, effective and productive method. Besides, this is your hobby. Hello again Patrick and Rebecca, I am still learning about navigation etc. I am amazed at the amount of modern equipment available to help with finding a path through the oceans. I intend to buy some of the things available when I get a boat. All that aside, from what I see I don't think there is a replacement for learning old school navigation with charts and a sextant because that won't fail. As for your patreon comment, for what it is worth, I agree. Anton Ditt made a post on this site and I have had the same thoughts as him for months now. What has attracted me to your videos is the amount of information you can pack into a short video. You have shown what works and what doesn't. Your videos are no nonsense and raw. I like this. I also like that you both seem to be humble people which is backed up by real knowledge and not simply fluff. Great stuff keep it up. I'll check out your website.

It's amazing to see how fast this channel has grown. I think I was about number 65 when I subscribed. Now, in a very short time, it's at 9,000 subscribers. Keep up the great work, the reason why it's growing is because it's great content.

Space Walk, Once the channel got to 1,000 subscribers, the pace of new subs was what I always hoped it would be. Then just a couple weeks ago the channel hit 5K and there was an amazing incline to now over 9K. I can give Rebecca all the credit for finally getting interested in the videos and tweaking the analytics and adding content. Thanks for sticking with me for so long. Making videos has been a real learning experience. Certainly the newer ones are better than the early efforts.

Nice video guys. Umujo was a friend of mine (Norwegian) lagoon 45 that used to be here in Maputo. He sailed it up there last May and sold the boat In Zanzibar and flew home. It was a spur of the moment sale. I enjoy my Raymarine equipment myself. I have 2 a series 7 inches next to each other.

Good old Newport, RI where we left from. On our way out of Narragansett Bay, we just happened to sail past a friends boat; we yelled "See you in 4 years!" It has now been 12 years and will be at least 12 more if we should ever see Narragansett Bay again. So far, from doing a lot of boat deliveries to the Caribbean, the water between RI and Bermuda is some of the most challenging. Those November storms can really stir things up.

Wonderful video, It's nice to see what experienced boaters are using. I have a tablet as primary with a handheld gps as backup along with my phone. I plan to use a standalone autopilot. I like the idea of the iridium for offshore, sounds like the goto device for communication.

This is Rebecca...Have to say...the Iridium GO was a real game changer for us...used to look out the window and just GO if it looked nice that day. The GRIBS were just wrong 50% of the time or more. Now we have very few surprises! Boring is good! The Iridium GO paired with Predictwind fits like A glove for us! We are very careful to shut the month to month plan down when we are near internet for any length of time..this saves substantial amounts of money per year! I nan not emphasize enough, how important it is to get the SIM cards from Predictwind. There may be other straight forward service providers around, but there are some with a lot of fine print. Predictwind sims are just all inclusive, no fine print...and no surprises. We have the unlimited plan so I never have to worry about chatting, emailing, or asking for weather too often!

Excellent content.. much appreciated! As a note of interest, throughout most of the world you can tune into ndb’s non directional beacons. They are used in aviation and frequencies are available with coordinates on both IFR AND VFR charts. Might be a decent backup in event of gps failure. Keep the great content coming👍

There are some aviator/sailors out here who would understand NDBs but still would not be carrying aviation charts. Is there any sort of booklet or compilation that would be suitable for carrying on a sailboat for backup information?

The easiest way to quickly view the information would be with the ForeFlight app....its an aviation app that is extremely feature rich. I took a look at SE Africa and pulled some NDB’ info for you to try if you are interested in seeing if you can receive them.. I’m curious how they will work from sea level. Wow! very informative and well presented video. Thank you for posting this type of info. It's really good to hear from seasoned sailors about what gear works. I'm new to sailing and am planning my first offshore trip (starting small w/ the Dry Tortugas). My current setup is a 10" Ipad pro running Navionics boat app and windy.com. I was very happy to see Rebecca's favorite app is the Navionics. I put her other suggestions on my download list. I'm supplementing the internal GPS with a Bad Elf BT unit. For depth and supplemental chart plotting I'm adding a Garmin echomap plus74Cv. It's a 7" depth finder running chirp sonar and Navionics blue chart maps. All this goes on board a Rhodes 22.

Whether a 40' boat or 22' you still need the same nav equipment. Nice to have that on a Rhodes 22. Out and back to the Dry Tortugas is a fun trip. Have a good one!

Patrick nice trip down memory lane on the electronics. i consider myself a young man in this game having only 30 years sailing exp (im 50 years old. just got started late.) and the changes in the last 30 have been huge. when i was planing my circumnavigation i was shopping for sextants and SSB's and a full chart portfolio. but now on our boat we have none of that. like you we have two Raymarine MFD,s and Raymarine autopilot. it can be run from either MFD or independently operated from its own control head. like you i believe in redundancy and a piece of equipment being able to operate independently if we have an issue. so if i lost the auto pilot control head i can resort to driving the boat from a MFD or even the IPAD. we also went with Iridium Go and back up the nav with navionics on our phones and IPADS. at last count we had 8 separate chart plotters on board that used 3 separate satellite constellations for there fix. the French, Russian, and US GPS systems. this with 48 mile radar and sonar like yours and we find our self's doing very well. i will add. you need to have a MFD or plotter at the helm. too often we have seen our friends run aground because there plotter is not accessible to the helm. and a small error or lapse in communication has led to a bad situation that could have been avoided by having the plotter at the helm. cheers and happy sailing.
