Yes, I would agree that disconnecting the battery would be a good practice when replacing the sender. Cheers!

yes, you can just touch those two wires together at the sending unit and the gauge should go to full. most likely the ignition switch needs to be in the Run position

the white wire is supposed to be placed between the case and bracket but very helpful

I am needing to do this same job...When you jump the wires it didn't look like you touched them together directly as they were still bolted down. Did you use some tool to jump the wire?

it could be the fuel sender or it could be the gauge. I would start by checking the gauge by grounding the wire that comes off of the fuel sender. If it goes to full when you ground it, you know the gauge works and you can concentrate on replacing the fuel sender. good luck!

How did you break the bolts loose and is there a metal plate inside the tank that the screws go into?

I used a very good #2 screwdriver and pushed down as hard as I could while turning loose. I took my time to avoid stripping. Yes, there is a metal insert of some kind molded in the tank. Good luck

I have three wires pink sending unit wire, green and a black one. so how do I set this up

so did you touch both grounds (green wires)? Im guessing there would be no sparks?

yes, touch the two wires together to verify the needle on the gauge moves to full

You will not (or should not) get sparks by touching the sending unit wire (that wire secured by a nut in the middle of the unit) because you arent grounding 12 volts. There essentially isn't 12 volts at the sending unit. The (12) volts are only at the guage itself. I think many of the sending unit wires are pink. My voltage (12 volt) wire activates (sends volts) only when the key is turned on. and goes directly to the fuel guage terminal labeled "I" (that's a capital i) for ignition. That wire on mine is purple. The sending unit wire (pink) goes to the guage terminal "S". Your ground (may be black or green) lands on the guage terminal "G" or "GND".

mine dosent even have head on the screw/bolts. they are just rusted lumps on the top guess im going to have to drill it.

Well I took my time cleaning and preparing everything meticulously. The job is not difficult, but did take about 2 hours

5 hours seems excessive. However, every boat is different. Is yours a Chaparral as well?
