When I spent a week in Germany and a week in Austria, I was shocked how friendly the airport security was, compared to our TSA agents in the US. Everybody's security seems nicer than the US, but the Germans were joking around and smiling. It was great.

I work in an airport, and here at least Marine's concern about how to respond if asked the purpose of her visit is pretty unfounded. For international flights the customs and immigration agents, of which they'll be only two assigned to check the passports of an entire incoming flight, don't have time to ask people that when dealing with those kind of numbers, especially if it's clear the person in question is having trouble understanding them. As long as their passport and any paperwork is valid then that's all they really look for. Later when collecting baggage is when you'll be watched at a distance along with everybody else to identify suspicious behaviour (besides nervousness which is common) by specially trained customs agents and counter terrorist police, (formally special branch) who may on occasion ask you a few questions. An interpreter will be provided if they really need to ask you something important.

Not in Austria tho, only a few of the western and central european states have those issues. Namely France (where everyone is at risk), and some slight issues in spain and italian for non-documented immigrants. You;d have to go into the balkens or far eastern europe to have that concern.

As Austrian it's always surprising how many Austrians actually speak at least a bit of Japanese because they watch anime or have a job that works with Japanese companies. Like 1 out of 10 people I know know at least some Japanese. And it is probably biased because most people I know went to university or college, but even overall, it's probably 1 out of 25. Also I bet there is at least one guy from the Airport crew that speaks Japanese because there is a lot of Asian tourists, both from China and Japan. I mostly base all of that on the state of Styria and it's Capital Graz, so it may be different in other parts of Austria, I haven't been to Vienna in over 10 years.
