I remember reading someone's post on the forums about fish stocking, and it made me laugh. They said, "If you follow everyone's advice on the internet, you'd have a 120 gallon tank with 1 goby and be doing water changes every 2 hours."

I know you mentioned it with the 6 lined wrasse but to highlight, it's generally recommended to add in order of peaceful -> semi-aggressive regardless of fish types. It's useful therefore to build a stock plan. Plan and research before shopping and once again.. no impulse buying. Should be noted the more "hiding spaces" in your rock work the more likely the fish are to come out of hiding as they feel safe. Chromis are hit and miss from what I've read. Loads of stories about starting with 3-5 and ending up with 1. I'd probably add an algae eating blenny, such as a Starry Blenny ((Salarias ramosus), to the 30g+ stock lists but they are one of my favourites anyway because of their character so I am biased.

No orchid dottyback and purple firefish together..the pseudochromis likes to go after similar looking/colored fish and it wont end well for the purple firefish..other than that the list looks great..

New to saltwater, but very experienced with freshwater so I was prepped for cycling, bioload, etc. I have several of these beginner fish. Annnddd then added a blue spotted puffer. It was an impulse buy because my girls loved it and it's been working out so far! Everyone seems to be getting along and sharing food peacefully. The only traumatic event was when I thought the puffer was dying the second evening when it changed color, curled up against a rock, and started bobbing when it went to sleep. 🤣

Firefish tend to be the most timid, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to add that fish first. From there, flip a coin on the Royal Gramma or two clowns. I don't think you can go wrong either way 🙂 The cleaner shrimp can be added at any point once the tank is cycled and there is no ammonia present.

I had a 20 gallon with about one hundred fancy tail guppies. No, it was not marine, but it was still impressive. I destroyed it when I augmented the filtration. The Juwel Bioflow 300 was doing perfectly. Now I'm restarting my 710 liter and plan about 6 or 7 fish. I used to love heavy stocking but chasing nitrates is no longer fun with three ruptured lumbar disks, although my wife bought a 114 liter carboy with wheels for me. That thing really makes a difference when moving water.

My six line wrasse killed about $200 worth of fish. If you get one, which can be a nightmare, try adding it last. But, I doubt that will even work. I had to move mine permanently to my coral quarantine tank because it doesn’t play well with other fish. It is in there with a damsel. They are both jerks, so they seeming to get along together.

A great alternative to the purple firefish is the exquisite firefish. Pros: 1) even better coloration (the white area on them is slightly yellow) 2) they are from deeper waters than purple firefish and I find that they do not jump at all if you have issues with that (although get a lid anyways) Cons: 1) much pricier 2) they are from deeper waters and they tend to hide/live deeper in the rocks than your average firefish. I have one that literally burrows underneath my rockwork in the sand every night about an hour before lights off until morning.

I see you suggest a dartfish but I am thinking of adding a cardinal instead, would that be a smart idea/possible? Or better to not do that? I used to have a rainfordi gobi but he died after a couple of months, I think it was a bit too much of a picky eater, but also got bullied a bit much by my Royal Gramma so I'm hesitant of adding a new fish. I'm working on setting up a macroalgae tank, though haven't secured the actual tank yet. I'm looking at either a 10 or 20 gallon, but the stocking would be pretty much the same either way: 1 ocellaris clown, 1 rainfords goby, 1 yasha goby and 1-2 tigrigobius multifasciatus. Do you think this selection would work fine in either size, especially since it'll be macroalgae dominated?
@lionfishlair5215
@lionfishlair5215 2 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a good selection. The only thing I would worry about is keeping two different gobies in the same tank, many people believe this is a big no-no and can cause aggression and in-house fighting between them. However, my friend kept a watchman and fire goby together for many years, and they got along perfectly fine. I suppose it is just dependent on the individual fish, your aquarium stocking, and the size of your tank. Good luck dude, I would certainly recommend the 20 gallon tank as well 👍

@@paulshockley8632 Tank has been running with 5 fish for a bit over two months. So far all my fishes get along with no issues with the Royal Gramma and Firefish. I did use live rock with lots of holes so each fish had their own area to stay around. I also paired my Yellow Watchman with a Tiger Pistol Shrimp (warning will burry/flip frags on the sand bed) which is always digging and abandoning burrows for different places. This usually allows my Firefish or Royal Gramma to live in the abandoned burrows and sometimes I see the fish that sleep/live in burrows play musical chairs with different burrows the shrimp created. If you’re curious on the order in which I added mine, it was Clownfish pair, Firefish, Watchman Goby, Pistol Shrimp, and Royal Gramma.

@@kylellrc799 Nice! Well my tank is going fallow right now so I do have the chance to add the fish in that order now! Since I introduced a YWG and it of course carried ich and didn’t make it. So that sucks but I’ll save my clowns and gramma. Out of curiosity what other inverts do you have? Does your pistol shrimp not kill any snails/hermits? I have various snails/ hermits, blue tuxedo urchin, cleaner shrimp, and a conch snail.

If you use the 40 gallon stocking list, you'll be in a good place. From there, you can probably add one or two more down the road as you learn the ropes and see certain fish species that you really like. You might even be able to add a small tang like a kole tang. if this is a 4 foot long 55 gallon.

@@BulkReefSupply yes thank you for the advice. I will do that. I thought it would be the same since it's not that much bigger than a 40g. And yes it is a 55g long

What centerpeice fish do you guys recommend on a 40 gallon breeder? I think thats all I'll need and opt out for the baslets or grama. I'm thinking pair of clowns, pair of goby and shrimp, 3 cardinals, 1 six-line wrasse, and a dwarf lionfish. Noted that the lionfish may predate on the cardinals or even the clowns, thats why I'm planning to start out with a small or juvenile lionfish and add him lastly in the stocking lineup. Will just let them be "friends" with the other inhabitants as he grows. Is this doable?? I've seem success with this set up tho. In which the lion doesnt bother its tankmates and cares only to the new things that fall into the tank. What do you guys think? Do you guys have any suggestion in terms of centerpeice fish?? Other fish in mind are: toby/saddle puffer or small type of tang (?)

Definitely wouldn’t recommend this as the lion can eat fish much bigger than you think, their mouths open quite wide.

I have a question! So I recently had to deal with ick got it from a Pyramid Butterfly fish. Then it wiped out half of my fishes. The purple tang has survived I named HIM Maximus! So after 3 months have passed by I want to add new peaceful fishes. Will this be a problem now since the Purple Tang is basically the King in the tank? It's a 75g and he is 3-4inches in size. I was thinking of taking him out and putting him in an acclimation box while I add the new fishes. Any personal opinions or experiences will help!

Do you have to introduce them all at once or can you slowly add the fish? 40 gallon breeder tank here
@bangmonsta
@bangmonsta Жыл бұрын
slowly, in batches, from the least aggressive to most aggressive. This way, your peaceful fish have time to settle in, and your biological filtration has time to grow/adjust to the new bioload. Maybe do something like this - divide your stock into 3-4 batches, and wait at least 2 weeks between each batch.

@BulkReefSupply
@BulkReefSupply Жыл бұрын
As long as there is enough habitat in the tank (i.e. rockwork) to give the fish places to hide and your filtration is capable of taking care of the fish waste, you should be just fine. Of course, keep an eye on the tank and look for any signs of aggression.

I have question as it's significant difference, are all of these discussions based on 20 gal by size or 20 gal by exact amount of water in the tank ?
@BulkReefSupply
@BulkReefSupply 2 жыл бұрын
We're talking about a 20 gallon aquarium before rock/sand is added. A standard 20 gallon is generally 24" x 12" x 16" or a 20 long is usually 30" x 12" x 12". Don't overthink it too much 🙂

In your presentation of the goby and pistol shrimp I saw that there was some red algae , is this a good algae ? I ask because I had an outbreak of this algae in my 36 coral tank and it actually got out of hand before I knew it and I ended up emptying the tank , cleaning it , then started over. I'm just curious if I see this again what should I do ?

That's macro algae, often added to aquariums intentionally as a cool addition and splash of color. There are some great red macro algae out there like dragon's breath/pom pom gracilaria.
