The emergency bilge valve sould be a screw down non return valve left in the open position and isolated with a remotely operated valve upstream of the manual valve. The 'Bag test' can then be performed first by creating a positive head of pressure on the emergency bilge valve by opening the remotely operated upstream valve first to see if any water leaks past the Em'gy bilge valve seat this is called a back flow check. The second part of the test is to ensure the Em'gy bilge check valve does infact lift off its seat. With the remotely operated valve closed line up the ballast pump sea to sea and start the pump. Next open the remote valve, and watch the water sucked out of the bag. Note - keep a good hold of the bag else it will travel up the suction pipe also. Once the water is gone and the vacumm is broken the Em'gy bilge check valve should re-seat preventing any water back flowing into the bilge. Stop the ballast pump and return the test materials back to the store.
