Should The Mariners Trade a "Soto Package" for Luis Robert?

With the White Sox in town playing Seattle, the question of whether Luis Robert Jr. should be allowed to leave the city is being asked. Should the Mariners trade some marquee prospects for Luis Robert Jr.'s services? Rumor has it that the asking price is astronomical.

The White Sox saying they’re looking for that type of deal is absolutely nuts. Still absolutely want the Mariners so go out and try though albeit for a much more reasonable price

Robert had 172 SO vs 30 BB in his best season, during his prime age, while healthy, which is wildly disconcerting when it's a player you literally are trading the farm to acquire, and who will have diminished defensive value playing out of position (can't play CF), and who will already be getting pushed out of the league in the next 5-6 years because of his poor contact numbers... I'm not sure he's better than Canzone or Raley when you factor in trade cost, health, money, years of control, and poor RHB vs RHP splits (79 OPS+ against RHP and 121 OPS+ against LHP starting play yesterday). This is the kind of guy that makes the Luis Urias trade look smart... I would rate this a biohazard level acquisition. This is definitely a hype of help trade.

The Mariners equivalent Hassell = Young (both highly touted up the middle talent) Wood = Emerson (both highly touted in the industry and in both orgs. Both have top 10 in the minors potential) Abrams = Ford (more up the middle talent) Gore = we dont have an equivalent. Would have to be Evans + more. Probably Evans + Aidan Smith or Tai Peete In other words, an insane overpay for someone with availability questions, one of the worst approaches in baseball and someone who has had effort concerns in the past

Evans actually has more value now than Gore at the time of the trade. Gore's value was at an all-time low when he was included...

@@DrWestlake Nope. Gore had at the time, currently has and always will have a higher ceiling than Evans
@DrWestlake
@DrWestlake 10 күн бұрын
@@accentball That's not true at all, he's gaining a lot of excitement and at the time Gore was falling completely out of the Top 100s for everybody... Prior to 2022 (the year he was traded), he had fallen from #6 to #86 by MLB pipeline, as an example. I don't like all their rankings, but at least it gives an idea of how much opinions had changed on him following a missed 2020 season due to covid and a mere 50.1 IP in 2021. The Mariners are trying to fast track Logan Evans to the majors to help in the bullpen, as he's widely considered to be as good or better than Woo and Miller at the same age, while also possessing far better secondary pitches that all rate as plus. YOU might not be aware of the helium, but he's right now one of the top 10-20 right-handed pitching prospects in baseball depending on who you ask. Everyone is slow to agree to this in terms of rankings because he was a 12th rounder who was drafted with a 91-92 mph fastball and now sits in the high 90s and touches triple digits.

The M’s could probably get Vlad Jr and Bichette from Toronto for 2 top 10 prospects (My guess is their #2 ranked prospect in the organization and the #27 ranked prospect in MLB, C Henry Davis and the M’s #5 prospect SS Felnin Celesten) and maybe add their #10 prospect OF Jonathan Clase and their #27 prospect, RHP Walter Ford. I bet that could get it done and then u play Bo at 2nd and keep JP Crawford at SS, or vise versa. Then their lineup would be 1: SS Crawford; 2: 2B Bichette; 3: CF J Rod; 4: 1B Vlad Jr; 5: C Raleigh; 6: DH Haniger; 7: 3B Rojas; 8: LF Raley; 9: RF Canzone. Or put Vlad @ DH and play Locklear @ 1B. Ideally Vlad DH’s and Ty France is at 1B but looks like he’s gonna miss quite a bit of time now. Then they have 2B J Polanco on the IL, DH M Garver, UTL D Moore, SS R Bliss comin off the bench. That would immediately change the trajectory of this lineup

Mariners should explore what the Braves would want for Fried should be a up coming free agent. A starting Lefty would be a bonus and they should hit up the padres and explore what they'd consider for Ha Seong Kim I do believe he turned down his option to stay with the padres. Both would be looking for future contracts. Contract years players usually play better. Should be able to not give up the farm for a upgrade to a probably playoff bound team.

The ChiSox are going to want too much and screw up Robert's trade value. He will then be traded for much less next year or the year after. We've seen this happen with the Rockies and Arenado. It will likely play out the same here.

That’s a hard pass for me dog. Chicago can keep their perennially injured, sometimes a beast, sorta center fielder. Soto on the other hand is a real slugger with loads of personality. That’s a guy you consider nuking the farm for not Robert. I’d trade Luis Urias and a 20-100 ranked prospect for him but there’s not really a ton of dependable value there.

We should definitely NOT trade 2 of our starting rotation, especially Woo. For one thing who would we replace them with Emerson? He might have done OK during his last outing but he's not ready to be a full-time starter. And we would be real idiots to get rid of Woo when he's on track to having an even BETTER year than Randy's Cy Young in 1995

We all have recentcy bias because of many of the top farm players from the M's system (21, 22) doing well in the majors. While that is excellent, you cannot expect to hit as well on the next wave. That is simply unrealistic. You are trading unknowns for a proven MLB player. While I don't love Robert Jr. I think you HAVE to be open to trading several of the top 5 for a proven major league hitter. The time is NOW, this is the year to BUY and make a serious run. NO MORE NIBBLING AROUND THE EDGES with trades Jerry!

Get Luis Robert Jr. now. Give him a better training, better conditioning and better supervision for his health. He is only 26 years old. You are not going to depend on Mitch Garver, Ty France, Mitch Hanniger, Luke Railey even though Luke is playing better than ever. Luis Robert Jr. is the difference of going deep into the playoffs or getting caught by Texas Rangers at the end of the season.

This is going to get downvoted to hell... Just do it. Get Robert Jr and deal whatever it takes to move on from Canzone, trade Emerson at a premium before he falls back down to earth (taking that extra 1st round pick and turning it into an All-star), and probably Peete and/or Montes / Evans or Hancock and try to add bulk for Kopech. This move makes the most sense of the possible targets (Paredes will cost way more, Alonso is a pure rental overpay, Marte is an option I like but IDK if he's significant enough of an upgrade). I think when we move Robert off of CF the injuries slow down, and his defense is ridiculous (he nets us +16 outs above Mitch Haniger in 2023, +13 over Teo, stealing nearly a half game from our opponents) and with Ms roster he combines with Haniger, Garver, and Cal as one of the leagues best hitting OF/DH/C combos. Edit: Trade is Canzone, Emerson, Montes, Evans plus some top 100 org prospects for Robert and Kopech.
@chriskeddie4226
@chriskeddie4226 17 күн бұрын
His bat isn't worth a Soto level haul. If it was a case of 1 top 4 guy and a top 10 guy like Arroyo + an older prospect then it might be worth the risk. However, his strikeout rate is high and his walk rate is low. If his power declines (like a lot of hitters at T Mobile) he becomes a defensively skilled Teo. A good player but not worth an all in push.
@johncorring
@johncorring 17 күн бұрын
@@chriskeddie4226 Soto circa 23 or 24 trade? I agree Soto is in another tier from Robert but Robert is simply the biggest impact available bat. Maybe we need something different to solidify our push, I think BP and outfield are it, so kopech and Robert looks like a possible fit but Jerry will almost certainly find a better org value deal somewhere else. If we do get him in a big deal I want it sooner so we can start managing him into the best role, so not deadline more like... Thursday
