On this day in 2010, Lance Cpl. Kyle Carpenter was serving as an Automatic Rifleman with 2d Battalion, 9th Marines, 1st Marine Division in Helmand Province, Afghanistan when his rooftop security position came under attack. When an enemy grenade landed nearby, Carpenter, without hesitation and in complete disregard for his personal safety, threw himself on the explosive, effectively absorbing the blast and saving the life of a fellow Marine.
Carpenter’s injuries were substantial, and his recovery took nearly three years and more than 40 surgeries. Throughout his recovery, Carpenter has inspired thousands of people with his story of courage and resilience.
On June 19, 2014, he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his exceptional bravery and devotion to duty. He is the youngest living Medal of Honor recipient.
