First Aid knowledge is a must if you carry knives. One time, when cutting up a whole pile of boxes, I accidentally cut my hand open with my Delica 4. It was spurting blood. I instantly applied pressure, called out to my wife to bring a tea towel so that I can tourniquet my wrist. Once it was tight enough that the spurting stopped, I dressed the cut and wrapped my hand nice and secured with a bandage, then eased off the makeshift tourniquet. My wife then drove me to the hospital to get stitches. The doctor was actually pretty impressed by how I sorted myself out. The wound was done up like it was a paramedic’s handiwork. He said a lot of people would have panicked, and bled out. Good thing I’m a war veteran infantryman that don’t get squeamish at the sight of blood. Army strong!

NO ABUSE! YES! Some people are so fixed in trying to use things, specially knives, in a way that was not intended... If you want to chop the jungle down, get a freaking machete, but those tactifools who say a knife is not good after they hit it ten times with a bat and it bends... I dont know what to say

I used to listen to everyone say tip up carry or go home, but after carrying a Spyderco military and Socom Elite (which only allows tip down), I notice its actually much faster and more practical. If people actually give it a try I think they'd be surprised.

I like tip down cuz I have large hands and getting deep into my pockets is no easy option. Pinching the top of the knife with my thumb and index finger allows the the knife to pivot into the palm of my hand much easier than tip up does.
@DustinFlu
@DustinFlu 8 ай бұрын
Sometimes it depends on the length of the handle/blade. On a short folder if you pull it out tip up the entire handle is right there so your still close to deployment but if it's a large folder and you pull it out tip up then your way at the butt of the knife which could make you stretch to reach deployment or might not be able to reach it at all. In my mind tip up or down is a case to case decision not a one and done.
@echosierra9990

Tip up, blade against your seam, because as you draw your knife to use, it is ready for immediate deployment. Your thumb or index finger will naturally fall on the thumb studs or opening hole.

i agree with everything you said - i would add to streamline the key chain - i actually put the keys on the ring in order of need and i make sure the key is also oriented correctly so i know what im grabbing and the teeth are aiming in the proper direction to enter the key way correctly - makes for a quicker entrance to the relative safety of home

1. I do agree with the tip up blade back carry for convienece and ease of deployment. As always I carry in the waistband which has been really kind to me with the caveat that some knives REALLY hotspot when carried there. 2. And yes keep your stuff in the car well out if sight. I've had friends lose their $1500+ M:TG collection because someone thought it was a laptop bag and smashed the window. I grew up in a bad area so it's just my natural state. 3. As far as abusing tools I've had enough tools break just using them too hard and not realizing it. Not only do you break something you may need, but you can also get hurt doing it.

Left handed but not left out. Part of the reason I usually EDC a Spyderco is to carry as you recommend. Still rocking my Leatherman Wave with clip in my right pocket though. I tightened the hardware on the blades so they won’t open unintentionally and I typically use that knife right handed.
@kevola5739
@kevola5739 9 ай бұрын
I used to carry the Wave this way but it is so worn now that the plier pivot opens up in my pocket. I wish the pocket clip was on the knife side rather than the saw side. I removed the hidden lanyard and use the removable lanyard in its place along with the pocket clip that it came with. A cord from the removable lanyard to the belt keeps the tool closed but can be removed easily when needed.

Renegade here, I’ve carried a folding knife exclusively in my back right pocket for years. For me it comes down to those pockets being bigger, it’s a little less obvious, and I find that when I pull a knife from there, a flipper in particular, it naturally places my hands exactly where they need to be for deployment without having to rotate the knife or anything. In the years I’ve carried this way I’ve never been bitten, which is thanks to one of my biggest edc non negotiable: only carry tools you trust 100%.
@Spthomas47
@Spthomas47 9 ай бұрын
I primarily carry back pockets as well because my phone rides front right and wallet, pen and flashlight are in the driver's seat. Never been nicked or bitten because I trust my carries. I do have a couple "dress" carries that usually go in the front pocket, but that has to do with the pants rather than the knife.

I agree with too much crap in your pockets. I generally think many in the edc community act like micro preppers as opposed to tailoring their edc to what the actually would use on a daily basis. I have always been of the mindset “learn to do more with less” or “keep it simple stupid”. I work in a lab in a factory. I carry a Slipjoint, a big idea design slim bolt action pen, 512gb thumb drive, slim 3 slot front pocket wallet and my phone. Simple not bulky, not drawing attention to myself and it more than takes care of my needs for daily tasks and emergencies.

I like tip up towards the center of my body. I have a yoimbo2 with 5x5 upgrades. I do this because when deploying the blade i want to bring the knife forward and not backwards for self defense, and allows the poccket catch to reliably catch on any type of pants.
@jwmmitch

I think I mostly agree with the no-abuse standard. One thing to understand being in construction is tools have an intended use (and sometimes that use includes being expendable) and abuse is using the tool other than intended, which can usually cause damage. And I'd never considered back pocket carry for a knife. I do carry my phone and wallet in my back pockets, but perhaps a back pocket carry is a good option for those rare knives that can't be carried tip-up blade-back (like you insinuated for left handed people)
@Knivess0
@Knivess0 Жыл бұрын
Really, never? My back left pocket is the go-to for my main carry and front right for the smaller backup carry. Phone in the front left and wallet in front right. Most pickpockets love a back pocket wallet.

@Zx2Solomon I've been trying to think if I've actually done it, seems like I've at least thought about it. I'm right handed and typically have knife front RT, phone back RT. Wallet back LT, flashlight front LT. And if I'm in a crowd I move my wallet to a front pocket or front sling bag

(1) So important. Even if you know your local laws, you need to know the laws of every state and country if you plan on selling/trading. (3) I learned this the hard way when one of my cars was broken into. Now, I don't leave anything visible. (4) That's a no-brainer. I'm sure everyone has been to a doctor or emergency room at least once in their life. Take note on what they're doing.

I carry mostly spyderco knives on me but I also carry the little razor big ideas knife in my 5th pocket. That razor knife is always the cardboard, zip ties and generally abused blade. I rarely use my high end steel knife to cut cardboard or whatever abusive thing unless I have to. I tend to baby my knife. But I hunt and break down elk with my k390 stretch 2, a beast! So for the fitting in your pockets thing actually is easily solved by just wearing some good quality vertx pants with magazine yoke pockets. Not only can you fit a backup knife and a lighter while keeping your flashlight seperated from your front pockets but you can easily use your front pockets as pockets. It also helps with keeping your stuff out of sight, less printing and more blending in.

I carry two knives on me typically, my modern folder in my front right pocket and a traditional pocket knife typically a 3 blade stockman in a slip with a lanyard for easy retrieval in my back left pocket. Most cutting task can be easily done with the 3 blade stockmen especially since I'm in no rush usually. Just pull it out if the back pocket it shares with a bandana handkerchief, grab the knife out of the slip with my right hand and open the blade shape I want for the job... 5 to 10 seconds and I can go to work.

I carry non-dominant hand blade tip down as it’s an Emerson wave. That requires it to be tip down to deploy. For any self defense knife, if it’s a folder, it has to be Emerson wave type deploy IMO. Anything else is too slow and cumbersome.

Never thought about the knife orientation thing, indeed. When in fact it is exactly these annoyances (and lack of everyday use) that made me give up on it. Having a possibly open knife with skeleton frame in your pocket every time your reach down to grab your credit card gets old real quick. Disagree on the abusing part, tho. Of course dont wreck your stuff on purpose. But I appreciate youtubers testing the solidity of stuff. Wished they did it in a more scientific standardised way, tho. Also, if that item is very critical to your job/safety and susceptible to break...definitely test it out in safety (buy 2 of them, dont degrade your stuff before u need them, obv) so YOU know its limit for YOUR use and YOUR body.

Man, you could have done a whole video on "Know your laws!" Every municipality is different, regardless of state or federal law. "Knucks" alone, even if you can legally carry them with a CCDW license, it is illegal to USE them. In my area, using them carries a heavier penalty than using a firearm in a self defense situation. The rest are all good points as well. I also especially like the tidbit of knowing first aid to a degree. I know too many people who carry a tourniquet because it's the in thing, but have NO idea of the correct use. Most gun ranges and stores worth their salt have STB (Stop the Bleed) classes that are relatively inexpensive. Education is worth more than the gear.

I carry in my bac pocket and have for years, never had a deployment in the pocket. 2=1 & 1=0 for knives and flashlights. Big blade goes in the back and small one goes in the front. This also works with carrying a beater and a nice knife. You let someone use the beater and not the nice one.

I have to disagree with knowing the law. I'm an American born free and my right to bear arms is guaranteed. If my knife isn't a weapon and hence arms. Then there's no reason I cannot carry anyone i want. If it is a weapon. It then arms and my right. Besides what's in my pocket is Mt business and nobody else has any business with what is in my pocket. I'm a law abiding citizen. Other than what I carry. So there's no reason for any leo to ever know what I'm carrying. Either way I do not give a good goddamn. If I'm ever arrested I'll go bankrupt fighting their tyranny to the Supreme Court if needed. Too many of y'all forget we are free people in this nation and have the right to spit on any law that restricts individual liberty. That doesn't infringe on someone else's rights. End of story. Fight tyranny or kneel. There is no such thing as halfway free

Brass knuckles are a bad EDC item in almost every state. If they aren’t outright illegal, using them in self defense as opposed to pepper spray will be harmful in a trial. Choosing to use them instead of a quick spray is a prosecutor's wet dream. Even if the criminal case goes in your favor, civil lawsuits can still get your wallet for damages as opposed to pepper spray that wont hurt most people beyond the intended burning.
