The game's ending: Mario & Luigi reach the ends of the NYC sewers to find a large warp-zone pipe with a sign next to it that says "This Way to Toad Town, Mushroom Kingdom" and a text on the screen that says "To be continued..."

Fun fact: The game's difficulty-ramping actually stops at Phase 35. At that point, the game's green fireball spawning at it's most aggressive (and up to 2 can show up at the same time), icicles spawn all the time and can also spawn on the pipes, enemy waves are almost completely Sidesteppers and Fighter-Flies, Slipices spawn as frequently as they can, and 2 red fireballs can spawn at once. Bonus stages also have the shortest timer of 15 seconds, go invisible, and are completely frozen over. Fun fact 2: The game itself technically ends around 975-990k score, depending on what the threshold for bonus lives is. Once you reach that last extra life point, a coding oversight (next extra life score overflows to be 0) causes the game to think you ran out of lives (it gives one every frame, and eventually past 255 it hits 8-bit integer overflow!), and the game automatically declares a game over if both players ever have 0 lives at the same time, causing that score to be the highest you can get.

@thenewguyinred The annoying footstep sounds when you walk is actually present in the Arcade Version of Mario Bros.. However, in the Arcade Emulator named "FinalBurn Alpha", the annoying footstep sounds in the Arcade Version of Mario Bros. are completely removed.

I recall playing this in as pizza-place arcade back at this time as a little kid, but was never able to beat it. I have long-overdue questions: 1) Did this game have an ending, or did it just go on forever, like a lot of video games back then? 2) If you get up to 999999 points, does it stay there, but keep adding up and not able to show it, stay there and can't go up anymore, or does it go back to 000000 again? 3) Did this game have a story? I can't remember what my Atari port of this game's instructions said. May not have given a story at all. Can't remember.

I can't answer the first 2 questions, but at least there was a purpose... I know the deal was that Mario and Luigi were carpenters that had just become plumbers and they had to go under New York City to deal with a strange problem down there. Weird stuff was in the pipes. I think that was about it. ^^; It was crazy I played this in a video arcade a few times back in the day as a little kid and had it on Atari2600 at home. I remember so many footstep sounds strongly from that game and the 7800

@@BologneyT This would be a cool prequel to SMB. Maybe the monsters coming out of the pipes were Bowser's minions, trying to conquer the Earth dimension for him? One of the minions were the turtles from SMB.

But I guess what actually happened was Miyamoto thought about how fun it could be to take one of Mario's old enemies with him when he just went bananas with where Mario was going with a Mushroom kingdom instead, LOL. But that was definitely a cool 'what-if' for me, too. That was the place where I'm most happy Bowser failed, but there was definitely something weird coming out of the NYC pipes, just like they were singing in Luigi's old commercial. XD

The game features 22 unique phases (although Phase 2 was removed from non-Japanese versions of the game), and after the last phase has been completed, it merely loops the phase order from then on; the screen will still read "Phase 23" onward up to "Phase 98" (99 in Japan). After reaching Phase 98/99, screen text will stop incrementing, though the order of unique phases still loops. The phase counter at the bottom of the screen reads "KO" from Phase 25 onward. 2.) The highest possible score which players can achieve is 999,990 points. 3.) Mario and Luigi, two plumber brothers, are in the sewers of New York (specifically the part of it under their house's water pipes according to Atari).
