THIS VIDEO: Mario Giacomelli always insisted that he wasn’t a photographer - he was more of an abstract expressionist who worked with the photographic medium. I think, the most inspiring thing about him and his work, is that given all the limitations that he faced, he was able forge a unique path for himself and he’s now regarded as one of Italy’s greatest photographers. Exhibition at museum MAXXI in Rome - it’s the national museum of contemporary art and architecture. They juxtaposed Giocomelli photographs with the paintings by Informal artist Alberto Burri. These two men had been friends for a long time and often grappled with similar ideas about reworking landscapes to appear abstract. It’s only when you put their work side by side that the strong parallels become obvious.

Thank You, Sir. This was a great video! Of a gentlemen who pursued his passion and his gift during his life time. I've seen his photos through out my life. Yet, knew very little about. I'd never describe myself as an abstract photographer, probably totally the opposite, but I do love Giacomelli's work. It is probably the expressionist side, the underlying atmosphere that draws me in. There is a true reflection of the artist in the work, rather than a 'pretension' of skilled manipulation - that sounds very arty. Maybe I should have left it 'I do love Giacomelli's work' ! Again, this vlog is a clear, short and well paced bio, thanks.

Wow! Graeme, I don’t know how you do it. Great short summary at the end. It is remarkable how often the trope of the early loss of a father, through death or desertion, crops up. In photography and philosophy… and probably other areas of achievement.

Yes, that's true. It seems that some psychic break opens up some avenues of expression...but at the same time closes down others.

Thanks for another great introduction to a terrific photographer whose work I did not know. Some of the high contrast work reminds me of the Japanese Provoke crew, while a few of his cut an paste images call to mind Roger Ballen.
