It's actually triggered by a glitch in Mario Odyssey where his dead conjoined twin sisters make an appearance for a brief moment. It's never clear if they're actually there or if it's only the fractured mind of Mario playing tricks on him and causing him to hallucinate briefly. Regardless this causes him to look to gambling as an escape from the problems in his past life. But more importantly to give Luigi a better life as a form of compensation for prior neglect
