Mario Kart 64: A.I. with no cheating allowed

Do you ever wonder what Mario Kart 64 would have been like if the games' A.I. was not allowed to cheat? Well wonder no more! Player One is the C0 state, which means he is human controlled. Player Two though Eight is CPU controlled with a state of D0 which is actually unused in the game. It's a hybrid between Human/CPU. Items from the item box do register, but since the game does not have an active window for each A.I player the items cannot be used. Probably a RAM/CPU limitation since using D0 state for all A.I. players is extremely CPU intensive. In real hardware there would be noticeable slowdown. The normal CPU state is 90 and we all know what that A.I. is like! In the D0 state the A.I has a lot more animations such when lakitu is respawning them. They also have drifting abilities, but it's incomplete and do not boost. I'll upload a video showing the A.I. unused basic drifting later. Anyways the A.I. is not allowed to cheat like it normally does, so would you really want a fair A.I.? I think not.

Regardless of whether this would make it too easy for the player, seeing the AI suffer like this is pretty cathartic. But yeah, I had a feeling the cheating AI was due to hardware limitations.

4-player mode does feel a bit off in certain locations, such as DK's Jungle Parkway. And then there's programming shortcuts taken like reducing the train length in Kalimari Desert.

A lot of ai ignoring collision when off screen is probably to help like clipping through walls is blatantly cheating but things like clipping through obstacles or animation skipping for items is probably just for optimization

@@krypticscythe2012 The issue with this is that they programmed little to no detection of obstacles because they didn't need it, they'd just be able to clip through stuff, had they gone this route, they could've made an ai suitable for toad's turnpike

Weird, the only character who never made a sound was Wario. Possibly due to emulator hardware restrictions. But whenever I rewatch this, I sometimes imitate his cry every time he gets hit. He also got hit the most times AND came in dead last. Poor Wario. LOL

Wow...and people say the Rubberband AI's bad when that's the only way the computers stand a chance! Also, why, on a system where the models are low polygon as is, did NIntendo decide to make the car models uglier at further distances? They use really different textures and the blue...thing and the white car look odd with a line below them for some reason.

***** Another noticeable change is the yellow...bus(?)'s front; What looks like a logo or emblem appears on the front but _only_ when it's high quality; It looks like the LOD textures were made before they were finalized...if only Nintendo made the textures for the high-quality and LOD models consistent...it makes me want to get some sort of model viewer and just look at the LOD models' differences! This almost makes me glad the racers are prerendered 3D images... EDIT #1: I wonder if Mario Kart 64 works like Kirby Air Ride where the instant two or more camera views are enabled, the draw distance and LOD become more obvious? I wonder if it's the same here, but they make LOD more likely to be seen because of having to render two parts of the racetrack at a time...or if the Nintendo 64 always does this regardless of mode, which would show how far Nintendo's pushing their console to its limits! EDIT #2: The bus or whatever it is is worse than I thought; Not only is the emblem-thing not there but the lights are just black lines...this can't just be a badly-compressed image...this has to be done on purpose or accidentally didn't copy over the texture; Nintendo could've updated it but probably forgot to.

***** That is amazing so I guess lots of shortcuts have to be taken in case all four screens get used!It makes me wonder how the game renders multiple parts of the level at a time with the multiple screens with the way it normally renders a small chunk at a time... It still make me think of Kirby Air Ride, though that's on Nintendo's next system...there's not much "pop in" in City Trial but as soon as you use the debug menu to add in a second camera (not even a second player!) the game starts failing to render distant parts of the environment resulting in the big white building suddenly appearing and the bottom four-story thing only having the panels that send you up to the different levels being visible and they have no animation...they're LOD models! I also discovered it works the same in 4-player, meaning even one additional screen makes it jump straight to the optimization needed for four views and it doesn't gradually become more obvious!
