Mario kart wii was supposed to have a mission mode but it was unfortunately scrapped, so who knows we might have had a mission mode in 7 and 8 too.

I don’t think they will do again since Mario Kart Wii had tournament mode similar like Mission mode, but they were suppose to have mission mode for single player just got scrapped it and it can still access the files due to Nintendo forgot to deleted it.
