This battle mode is the ONLY one in the entire Mario Kart series where Spiny Shells and Lightnings CAN be used. The Spiny Shell targets whoever on the opposite team has the highest point total, though this is ONLY if whoever obtained it has a considerable gap of points between them and the leader of the opposite team. The lightning item in balloon battle shrinks all opponents on the opposite team, but doesn't take away a balloon. It only serves to make them lose their items. Experienced this a lot, especially with the items set to Frantic.
