Mario Kart Wii - Countdown Race Mode! (Custom game mode by MrBean35000vr)

What happens if you take the best part of a race, the best part of a battle, and put them together? MrBean35000vr set out on a grand quest to find out, and here is the result. Introducing: Countdown Races! These races are an online only form of race, not to be confused with the videos by all the doom and gloom people who are doing "Countdown to WFC shutdown" nonsense. The aim of the game in a Countdown Race is to get as far as you can around a race in the time that you have available (you have a Countdown clock, hence the name), while hitting people with items to gain more time to race.
"But wait," you may cry, "what about the WFC shutdown? What's the point of making an online only game mode when WFC will be gone very soon?!" My answer is a simple one. We will still be able to play Mario Kart Wii online after the servers shut down!
"He's mad."
"There's no way."
"How can that be a thing?!"
Well, my friends, Wiimm and Leseratte and several others have been working very hard at creating a server that can do what WFC currently does, for use when the official servers are shut down. I'm also pleased to say that it's almost working and stands a very good chance of being completely working before WFC shutdown. I have connected to this server myself, and the Wii could not tell the difference between it and the real WFC. Either way, Mario Kart Wii will not be going completely offline, so you can relax.

Anyway, that's all quite a tangent, but an important one, I feel. Now, back to this video.
In a nutshell, what I said in the brief summary above vastly covers what Countdown is: A race mode with battle elements, where you have a countdown clock and hit players with items to gain additional time. Specifically, you gain 3 seconds per item hit. You do not lose anything if you are hit, however, so feel free to charge headlong in there and get molested, although it would be worth noting that giving your opponents points is not the wisest idea; after all, they can score too!
The Score counter is responsible for counting the hits. Generally speaking, your current score x 3 is the amount of additional time you have earned. You can earn points from any item that you get from a box, including mushrooms and bloopers. You can have a maximum of 10 points, which is 30 additional seconds. Hits beyond that don't add more time! When your time runs out, your engine stops, and you cannot control your vehicle. You can roll to places, if you're on a hill for instance, but you cannot influence your path or anything. Since everyone's going to have a different score, that means everyone will finish at different times. If you see any unmoving players on your travels, they probably ran out of time before you did (not a bad idea to pick up some points off random expired players, either). And of course, if you stop moving and everyone else still is moving, that means that your score must've been lower than theirs.
There are several new items for this mode: Triple fake item boxes ("triple fibs"), mushroom + green shell ("shroom green") and mushroom + bomb ("shroom bomb", "Dio"). Mega Mushrooms are also altered and do not drop if you are hit with a star, shock, etc if they are still in your item hold. You can also use mushrooms and golden mushrooms to earn points, by ramming people with them.
The winner of the race is determined purely by who's the furthest around the track when everyone has run out of time, hence the race element; it is important to body everyone, but you must also not forget how to drive. You can quite easily lose with a maxxed out score, or win with zero points.
This mode comes for free in the current version of CTGP, so just update to the latest version to try it out. If you don't have CTGP, a Riivolution version is available, here:

But you can only play this one in friend rooms. It's also not compatible with the CTGP version.

Known bugs with Countdown Mode:
Star/Mega/Bullet hits are currently tied to what you see, not to what actually happened. That means you can get points using these even when you didn't really hit someone, or not get a point when you DID hit someone.
Race finish leaderboards are individually calculated, and if the position tracker goes wrong in a race, they may differ from Wii to Wii.
Sometimes using a mushroom to score points actually scores twice instead of once.

OMG MrBean I just read the description, as the servers were shut down I thought, why does nobody rewrite them, I mean there are so many skilled programmers&hackers which do that for fun how can it be they no one is intereseted in rewriting them. Great work! You guys are gods for me, I mean I am barely able to write a little piece of PPC-ASM to add a teleport function to WiiPlay, Tank Game (btw the first ASM code I wrote by myself, until people came up and said it's sloppy, now I know which registry are volatile and which one aren't, how to use variables and make the code cleaner). And you guys rewrite the WFC server, add splitscreen, a new gamemode, etc. This is just extremely amazing stuff. You guys are sick in a very very positive way.

I personally like how the point registers if YOU hit the player with a star/mega/bullet. That way we actually have to players where they are, and it won't cause huge rages about lag. And there's no point in trying to hit people with megas and stars because of lag. You rarely hit them. I'd really prefer if it's kept like that since lag plays a huge rule in countdown races. Lag often prevents you from getting a lot of points. Edit: But then again, I can see a problem with it when you consider how you can continuously hit the same player four times in a row without actually hitting the person because they keep teleporting right back into your face.

Nice. Got to try this mode out the night it came out and I like what I played. Though I guess it's more fun the more people are in a group. With all the hard work that's been done with this mod, it's very impressive. I ask this: Are Time Trial ghosts going to be fixed at some point? MrBean35000VR? This was the first video I found of you to ask a question. I made a new account to race online on CTWW but I wanted Funky Kong and I don't have/use Gecko codes or what it is called. So I raced 2 cups on normal mkwii without CT's and I did the cups, I went back to mkwii with CT's and I was going to wiimfi when it said something like interrupted file data, I clicked on OK and then it was reset. I was in shock and didn't expact that would happen. I went to normal mkwii and when I loaded it up it said:"Your country setting has been changed, so new save data must be created. If you don't want to lose your existing save data, please return to the wii menu and restore your original country setting." But my country setting is saved to the netherlands and it is like that right now aswell!!! WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO TO NOT LOSE ALL MY RECORDS AND OTHER DATA??? PLEASE help me out I would thank you really MUCH!!!

Why does my ctgp not load my game licenses from original mkwii? when I go to my licenses, I am asked to create a new license.

This mode appears to be like an arcade game, as there is a time limit and time extensions! You start with 2:30 in most courses, but some courses are short, cutting the starting time down, for Baby Park it is only 0:50. Unlike arcade games, time extensions are only for scoring item hits, not completing laps. You also only have a maximum of 10 time extensions in one match. In this mode, is it possible that, when a match in this mode ends, the winning player (1st place) gets the 6th-12th place music?

My guess as to the mushroom bug is that two Wiis tell your Wii that you hit someone. Making you get two points. It this is the case greater ratio in lag/nolag and the amount it changes should be a small factor in the problem and it would be hard to fix. The best of luck with the bugs bean.

Countdown is a really interesting gamemode and it was such a great idea as battle mode was, well, not that good. Its cool to see some rooms still show up with people playing this gamemode to this day. But its kinda sad to see how little players actually play it.
