We saw him at the Atlantic City Steel Pier when I was about 4 - we had front row seats. He came into the audience - PICKED ME UP and held me as he sang! I was too young to realize the significance of it, but I do remember it, 70 years later!

It is a shame that the Opera Community of the time treated Lanza poorly and showed him almost no respect . But his movies introduced millions of non opera people to the music and passion of opera. It took recent greats in community to begin the re-introduction and admiration of this man's voice and talent. A thanks to Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, and others who have pointed out many times how good Lanza was and the influence that his singing had on them.

There will never be another Mario Lanza. No other tenor or opera singer had his passion when singing. So emotiomal my eyes whell up and I get goosebumps listening to his voice. . My parents played his records around the house when I was still a kid and I grew up knowing about Mario Lanza and his distinct singing voice which no other tenor has in my opinion. It gave me an appreciation of his singing and the opera. I love him and love going to the opera. He did have an early influence in my life this way. ❤❤❤

True so true have always loved his voice, now I’m not religious I won’t have anything todo with religion but this is the only religious song and singer I love anytime I hear another singer singing it I always compare them to Mario and they don’t even compete on his level so I either change the channel or turn the radio station over there’s just some songs that were destined for the singer you feel like it was actually wrote with their voice in mind and this is such a song no other singer even compares to him with this song a truly pure and beautiful voice just wish I could’ve met him as sadly he died many years before I was born 🥲

The inimitable Mario Lanza - there has been no-one like him and there never will be. Another angel singing in the celestial heavens somewhere. What a life and career he could have had without the MGM machine. But aren't those of us who love the guy and his voice so very fortunate that he was captured on film and recordings and captured so well. We may have lost the man but not his voice. Rest easy Mario Lanza and Bravo to all that you sang !!! xoxo

It is truly amazing that a singer who passed away so long ago still captures the imagination of millions. It is a testimony to Mario Lanza's fantastic talent. It was a splendid but short lived career filled with passion and success and some difficult times. At the end, Lanza was back on his way up and was among the most popular entertainers of his era. I recommend reading A KID FROM PHILADELPHIA, MARIO LANZA, THE VOICE OF THE POETS, and to listen to him as you read the beautiful essays that are a homage to a star who is still with us and will always be with us.

Lanza will always be remembered for bringing many non-opera fans to the opera through his voice, his acting, and mostly, his love for the people. He was the first real buff male singer - most tenors are large men, Lanza looked like he could play linebacker for an NFL team on Sunday afternoon and then be in front of the floodlights on Sunday night with just as much power and emotion as was spent on the gridiron earlier in the day - he was a modern-day singing warrior!!!

According to the all-Lanza website: the young singer’s name was Michael Collins - not to be confused with the famous British clarinettist of our time, nor with all of those named Michael Collins at the Internet Movie Data Base. His name didn’t even appear there in the full cast list of The Great Caruso. He merely lip-synched his part, which was sung by the American soprano Jacqueline Allen (1925-2009) for the film.

@@truthala Many moons ago I was the corp chef for Mariott and one of our clients was the Phila Museum of Art. Well the Opera company was having a big reception and I was in charge. As we were lifting a 500 lb ice carving it slipped and hit me in the chest, leg and feet. Thankfully nothing broken but I would not leave my post. WHY? PAVAROTTI would sing that evening. Well once all was set up I went back to the kitchen. Now understand majority of my staff was Black, wonderful people and I am white. We had no racism, they were always grand and nice as I treated them like the pros they all were. I even let them play their music which was hard on my ears as I like Classical and Opera. Well when Pavarotti had sun and they were leaving, he asked to see me. When he heard I got hurt and was down in the kitchen he and his entourage came down. Well you never heard such a commotion. Here was the Great man himself and I hobbled out to greet him and shake his hand. He said I heard you were hurt, and could not hear me sing, may I sing for you now. My staff and I said please yes. Without any musicians, he sang Ave Maria for me/us Before he was done we were all crying and even he had to wipe the tears from his eyes. When he departed my staff came to me and shook my hand and I said what for, they said if you did not get hurt he (Pavarotti) would never have come down here...... I pray to GOD that HE never lets me lose my memories. I pray if I get Upstairs I would like to know if Caruso, Mario and Pavarotti joined up to do the real 3 Tenors. Mario died too early but maybe that was HIS plan all along. RIP to all of the great singers of all types of music and all of the wonderful musicians. Pax+

@@truthala It's a clip from a film, and the actual singer was an adult woman soprano. Not Pavarotti.
@prarieborn64582 жыл бұрын
Wait, what ?? In the movie, “The Great Caruso”, and Mario Lanza as Caruso sang Ave Maria, Pavorotti was the choir boy who sang “Sancta Maria, Mater Dei . Ora pro nobis peccadoribus, nobis peccadoribus..” ? Pavarotti? then Mario joined in and they sang together A comment here says the boy’s was really a woman soprano? I never knew Pavarotti was in the movie , and I have always loved his voice, My Mother took me to the see the movie when i was a child and it really made an impression on me when the great Caruso died on stage. That scene and at the beginning, when the boy Caruso was a choir boy or altar boy, walking in a procession through the streets,passing his house where his mother was dying, and he had to stay with the procession. My Mother was a great admirer of Lanza. I looked for the movie on you tube. All I can find are clips of scenes. i came here to learn to sing the melody to the prayer which is in latin. The Hail Mary prayer in English does not fit the melody, and even the latin is tricky to get the phrasing to sync with the notes Other recordings from other artists inclluding Pavarotti, show a lot of creativity , ie repetitions of words or phrases… they are all very beautiful, but this one is the closest to the literal prayer. We can never say too many Aves. 💕 PS they say that when a prayer is sung or chanted as in Gregorian chant, it has a more powerful effect.

The boy beside Mario Lanza in this movie did not actually sing a part of the Ave Maria. It was Jacqueline Allen, an adult woman soprano. This info is available in several places. I quote info posted by Chris Dias: August 11, 1950 "The Great Caruso" Film Soundtrack Recording Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, Hollywood With Soprano Jacqueline Allen and St Luke’s Choristers w/ Wesley Tourtelot Organist. Selection: Ave Maria (Bach-Gounod) . For many years it was assumed that a boy soprano joined Lanza for this song as is seen in the film but when Rhino released the soundtrack recording, Ms. Allen was finally given credit and her name was listed in the booklet accompanying the CD.

Luciano himself said in an interview with Jon Tolansky of Decca Records, that his interest in opera increased when Mario Lanza came out with the Caruso movie. He used to stand before a mirror and imitate Lanza's singing. Luciano was born 12 October 1935 and most absolutely did NOT appear in the film.
