Mario & Luigi: Brothership's Tragic Character

Mario & Luigi Brothership's story may not have been the best Mario RPG story we've ever gotten. But it still felt like it did a good job at accomplishing what it was trying to go for. Especially with the tragic events involving one character in particular...

One major difference between Zokket and Reclusa that I noticed is how they both wanted to achieve isolation through loneliness. Reclusa wanted to isolate people based on their ignorance through their fantasies and desires, which is shown through the flowers. Zokket wanted to isolate people by hatred and resentment of others, which is shown by how he uses Glohm. This also highlights the natures of the two characters where Reclusa is a gleeful yet psychotic individual while Zokket is a cold and ruthless person who doesn’t care about anything or anyone.

My favorite new character is technikki. Liked her small story and how she helped the bros out with making at lest 4 of the bros attack

Even though the twist is very obvious, I do like it since it’s interesting. The one thing that threw me off is that Cozette and Zokket are different genders and I’m honestly still not sure about how that works exactly but it’s not really important. My complaint with it is that the great conductor telling Mario and Luigi that Zokket is her is completely pointless. There’s no reason for them to know that information because they don’t even bother to tell Connie for some reason, it’s really weird. If they weren’t gonna do anything with the reveal happening at that moment, they should’ve just waited until after Zokkets boss battle to reveal it. Also Cozette 100% should’ve died during the ending. I knew they weren’t gonna have the balls to do it but it would’ve been so much better if they did. They literally had a scene where they cut away from the action to show her passing out from her wounds. I don’t know if that was supposed to be a fake out death or they actually did want to kill her off but weren’t allowed to but either way I wish they did

I think "he" was used in a neutral way, similar to how Nights in Sega's Nights: Into Dreams and Journey of Dreams calls Nights a he.

I liked the Extension Corps and their goofy selves. The fact that they were basically the Team Rocket henchmen where their scheme's sometimes worked (the Glohm ray) they were still treated as joke villains. What solidified my love for them is that they also had the "power of friendship" on their side and they helped in the end.

I have to admit, I was a bit disappointed that the developers didn’t delve deeper into her backstory or provide proper closure for her character. I imagine in a DLC or sequel, Mario & Luigi would be venturing into Cozzette’s dream world to face a dream version of Zokket, who in this scenario, would be scheming to revive Reclusa and bring him back to reality, a failsafe plan left by Reclusa before his defeat. This would not only expand on her backstory, but also give her the proper closure I think she deserved.

I think Zokket is a very interesting Mario and Luigi villain. But thanks God, Reclusa was much better imo. I like how we got 2 villains who are different. One very calculated and cold and another who was childish and psychotic and chaotic.

chilliam did tell you where he and burnadette meet, they meet on the Heatfreeze Island remember? where they tried to run away from their parents, and burnadette told you that chilliam gived his mittens to her but rhe mittens where to small for her, and this is where she fallen in love with him for that nice gesture even if is not impresive to you the couple are still cute

I remembered the Heatfreeze part but I guess the mittens story slipped my mind/I mashed A too much throughout it lol. They're definitely not completely bad I was mostly just memeing for the video. But they're still probably my least favorite characters out of the ones that had major bonds to give in the end.

My new favorite characters of this game are Shun and Reclusa. I find Shun is kinda funny, especially in the scene where he disguises as a salesman. I think of him like a mix of Vivian and Marilyn from Thousand Year Door. The Strong one like Marilyn and one who often gets interrupted by Ecks and Ten. And Reclusa because he reminds me of Dimentio. (But also of Takuto Maruki from Persona 5 Royal and Bill Cipher from Gravity Falls.) I think Nintendo took inspiration from Fawful, Cackletta and Antasma as well for Reclusa. He has different colored eyes like Dimentio and the outfit has a similar shade of purple and is jester-like. He has his own set of "Reclusilized" minions like the Seedlusa, Weeping Trooper and Reclusiff like Fawful has his robots and mini drone. His laugh is similar to Cacklettas. And he traps the Concordians and Mario and Luigi in their own dreams/nightmares like Antasma did to the people on Pi'illo Island when powering the Dream Stone. And I like Reclusas little appearance and 4th wall break in the titlescreen after defeating Zokket.

I enjoyed Colette, but had one big issue with it. The game points out that to take over her recluse must have preyed on a weakness of hers, but that never gets expanded on. It’s never even hinted at what the weakness was. As for chilliam and burn their backstory is told and their bond expanded on by one of the turnips in the “let’s throw 9 grandpa turnips in one room to spout exposition we should have put elsewhere” room. Overall I enjoyed the story, but we should have gotten a bit of bowser during chapter 3 to work him in better, the zokket notes should have been spread across all the dungeons instead of all piled at the end, and bowser + jr should have definitely been a bond. Also for the name thing I honestly think the thing that kills the villain dynamic is ecks. Zokket has potential to bounce off of the corps well and ten + shun are pretty good, but ecks weird attempt at constant forced humor ruins it. If they made him someone that was tired and fed up with the name thing to the point of having given up and just made him more… tired/done with everything in general I think it could have been a pretty fun dynamic.

I think the reason why they didn’t include bowser + bowser jr. as a bond is bc that would be yet another family bond, which we got with Willma and her kids + Gorumbla, so they decided to include Bowser Jr. + Buddy as a bond, which worked pretty well imo.

@@Equalizer4 That's what I thought at first, but Connie and Cozette are mentor and student bond which we also get a 2nd time with the dance guys. Corp and Idle are also both team friend bonds. You could make the argument that buddy is as well, but I think that one's unique enough to not count. If not bowser + jr then I think bowser + his minions could work really well too. We see he's actually suffered damage from the fight so imagine showing up at the castle to find his whole minion force rooting for him and supporting him. That would definitely make him showing up at the end feel more natural.

Good question, bowser probably wouldn't have been able to move after being injured, perhaps the extension Corp simply decided to throw them off of fortress zokket into the ocean below?

I'm pretty sure they made Zokket male was to make the plottwist of Zokket being Cozette less easy to spot. Which is odd because they dropped so much other hints I had it figured out by the second lighthouse. (Both have a lanky build, Zokket actively checks in on Connie several times as if subconciously influenced by Cozette still,) And then they just reveal it all before you even fight Zokket.

And also the game is so dumb and cheesy yet logical, on how this game very obviously championing bonds and relationships to a point their final boss is just an pure evil demonic introvert that looks like a (also possessed) computer that got brainwashed into fully believing solitude is absolute. It’s stupid but that’s the point so it’s forgivable. 😅
