So this video explains a possible origin for the design, but I was hoping for an explanation as to why they changed the design instead of just continuing with the one they had been using. The Angry Sun appeared in Mario Kart Wii, so why not just go with a design similar to that one? Why the radical change?

the sun is strange, but it has more interresting stuff in the mario maker videos when the sun appeared in nsmbu and sm3dw! the sun's things on the ends usually spin around like a fan, and the sun kinda glows yellow. and when it spins to swoop down, it makes wind noises, and then an ancient desert-like sound plays to warn you that the sun is about to attack! the sun pretty much acts like a normal angry sun. but i think the looks of the sun from the nsmbw rom hack newer super mario bros wii would have been better looks and replacements for this... thing.

Just look at the REAL Angry Sun in Mario Kart DS and Newer Super Mario Bros Wii! I know you explained some stuff in the video but come on Nintendo, seriously? I actually thought it was fake or some kind of joke when I saw the Angry Sun looking like this online. It definitely took quite a few steps backwards in its already pretty good design.
