Just saw this and I absolutely love it. I've been playing it on repeat for the past hour! ...but then I started getting kinda sad. Incoming politically charged wall of text, so nonreaders and sensitive people beware! The song made me imagine a game where a hero has been saving a princess over and over for years from the same villain over and over. Over the years and adventures, the hero and villain have gotten to know each other pretty well, almost to the point that they could be rivals or even friends if they weren't bitter enemies. Over and over it's the same thing. Princess gets kidnapped, risk life, defeat villain, rescue princess, attend a thank you party, go home alone. Over and over. The alarms and shouting populace of the kidnapping happening almost like clockwork, grinding down the once great hero. Then, one scheme has the villain transforming himself into a woman, not a necessarily beautiful woman, but the evil king becomes an evil queen...or rather..evil princess, as the villain isn't married or anything. The routine goes as usual, hero risks life, defeats evil princess, saves good princess...but there's something different this time...at least...for the villain there's something different. When the hero takes the princess out of her cage and leads her out...the villain is sorry to see the hero leave, sees how ragged and tired he is, not from the daring rescue, but by the mindlessness of it, the routine. She takes initiative. She wants the hero back. She devises newer schemes, deadlier traps, and steps in to do evil monologues a bit more often. The hero is getting more stressed, more ragged. The routine isn't just routine, but getting worse! It's driving him insane! He goes through it again and again! But then after defeating the villain, as they're leaving, she lifts her head and tells him with tears in her eyes that she's sorry, and that she'll do better next time. The hero is confused by the genuine look in her eyes. Is it finally over? Is the cycle broken? Soon enough though, the alarm bells ring. Nope. Back to the grind. He adventures on, reaches the castle...only to find no good princess...just the villain. "I'm sorry but she's in another castle., and she won't even care for you, I fear. Don't have the power up to solve that puzzle: She's out there, but I'm here." (you know, the song basically) And he realizes, the villain, the rival, the one who could never be his friend...is in love with him. And now he has a choice to make, chase the princess that never has and probably never will care for him, or be with her? Obviously in the moment, he's still the hero, and needs to save the princess...but it lingers, and when the alarms sound again. The princess kidnapped...and the hero is...excited? Looking forward to seeing her again? But which her? Which princess is he really going out to see? To save? The good princess from the villain? Or is he going to save the villain...and himself?" The reason this made me so sad was because this idea sounded so good to me, and while I know that Nintendo would never do it, someone else could. Indie games are born from ideas like this...but I know it could never happen, at least not in the current political climate. I can see the headlines now "Indie sexist developer makes villain trans!" "Tran victim to cis male fantasies!" et cetera. We just...can't have stories like this anymore. For as open minded as we really should be, the aggressiveness and rage behind it forces stories like this to never be told in any real capacity. It's such a shame. I would love to play a game like that.
