A soup is primarily liquid as the main ingredient. A stew is chunkier and only has enough liquid to cover the ingredients. If the chunks dominate the dish, it is a stew. Therefore, chili is a stew and Chris is right. Common chrismel W.

so since chili is a stew/sauce it doesn't confine to the all stews are soups, but not all soups are stews rule so i offer that chili should be its own category adjacent to stews, where stews are adjacent to soups. theres multiple different kinds and ways of making chili.

@@Redflower2442 Just because one form of chili can be a sauce doesn't automatically mean chili is not a stew or soup. That's like saying tree sap isn't a syrup just because it's a naturally occurring substance, unlike all other syrups (manmade). Yes, there are some differences in different types of chilis, but 99% of chilis are stews, thus soups, and not a sauce.

I think chili is its own thing and stew is a thick consistency with mostly large pieces of usually meat and potatoes without much liquid. I think soup can be grouped with chili but not just fully under soup
