This is really just 7 hours of me solving puzzles, there's not much chatter. Might be good for background noise but don't expect much out of it.

I think that Picross is one of my favorite puzzle games, both original and 3D versions. My personal favs are the Genesis/Master System version (Switch eShop for sure, idk about other consoles/PC) and Picross 3D Round 2 (3DS).

@@GeneralCanada The sequel was eShop only in North America, so it's a little bit obscure. I'd recommend checking it out if you get the chance. It changes things up by having two colors to work with, and it gets brutal towards the end of it.

Hey Matt, in one of your previous streams you said you were thinking about whether or not to add input buffers to your game. You should definitely be aware that people using turbo controllers will have an unfair advantage in a game without input buffers. Pretty important thing to consider if you want everyone to have the same experience and/or you want to implement some kind of scoring system. Input buffers even the playing field.
@kirbles2035

Worth noting that it will be a single player game so certain players having an advantage over others shouldn't be a massive deal.

@@kirbles2035 It's something to consider regarding speedrunning. Also frame-perfect inputs and small timing windows for certain actions aren't always a fun type of difficulty for. Celeste is a great example of a game which has very lenient input buffering while still being very challenging.

matt, you said in the botw video that enemy variety was increased by having enemies hold different weapons, its not as applicable in 2d but you could reuse certain art if enemies had different weapons / were minorly altered.

I'm only about halfway through, but so far he only mentioned that he's probably thinking about Picross because of Dungeons and Diagrams. Nothing more in-depth than that. EDIT: Just finished watching, there was nothing else.

I don't get this obsession with pixel art and had thought that Matthew would see how disingenuous it all is. No single developer of the 5th generation and prior thought to themselves "Yeah, we're gonna use pixel art for this". Save for a few exceptions, all you had to work with was a screen real estate of 320 by 240 pixels (or 300 to 600 lines), so it was inevitable that the translation of artwork into game assets wasn't very highly defined. Beyond that though, people played these games on an an interlaced CRT, which blurred the image to the point of pixels not even being recognizable anymore. I certainly didn't sit there and thought to myself "Wow, this game sure is blocky" because my imagination filled out the rest. Now, whenever i see some retro-inspired low-poly pixel stuff, i immediately see through the facade. You don't have actual limitations to work with other than your own skill, so you make some up and the result doesn't even look like a game you could have played 30 years ago.

On the whole I agree. But maybe a counter argument can be made that pixel art is a good/relatively easy way of making "impressionistic" or minimalistic art. Sprite based animations. Quite minimal visual noise whilst keeping colours. In contrast consider another early form of graphics: those on the vectrex. Monochrome vector graphics actually looked great to me as a kid, but I don't think it was able to inspire the imagination as well as my DOS games. I guess whilst vector games are probably easier to make, pixels are still probably the best cost /benefit approach to visuals vis-a-vis gameplay.

There is way more things to consider on this topic, and are many reason why someone would prefer using it. And i'm not fond of how you assume people only use it cause they are lazy or something cause you didn't like it or didn't see the point in having it. First of all pixel art is only a visual limitation, it doesn't limit anything about the gameplay or the mechanics, so if the creator's only concern is the gameplay, the topic is irrelevant. And second of all, have you ever seen any pixel art game? Many of then are extremely complex and detail, to the point they not only they look nothing like the old 8 and 16 bit games, but they could had never even been made back then, like River City Girls, TMNT: Shredder's Revenge, Owlboy, Iconoclasts, Dandara or Katana ZERO. there are many and many levels and types of pixel art that varry from very modern and very retro in many different ways. The thing is that many people simply like pixel art, it was become an art-style, there are many artists that only draw pixel art and many people that not only like it, but adore and love it, myself included, to the point that whenever i see a game that i like that isn't pixel art, i wish it was (like Street of Rage 4, Ghosts and Goblins Resurrection and Hollow Knight). And there is a reason for it, squares were never inherent ugly, so why would making an image consisting of little squares be ugly? just like any other non-pixel drawings are made of lines, lines and squares are neutral elements used to form an image, it's all about execussion. People started liking it cause of experiences. Experiences accompanied by feelings that relate all the core visual and audio elements of that experience to the expecific feelings it had. Many people back in the day had a lot of fun playing games that were all 8-bit and 16-bit, and since those enjoyable experiences were all present by images consisting of little squares, people started relating that emotion with the visuals that accompanies it. That's how an art-style is created, and that's also how we people deside what we like and dislike, is all based on experiences and the elements and feelings that accompany it. Not every new indie game use pixel art cause they like it. There are many tecnical reasons to why some game developer would prefer to make a game with it, reasons that i'm not familiarize with. Like the fact that pixel games are also extremely light, to the point that no matter how ambitious and big the game is, if it's all made in pixel art than it will probally not even weight half a gigabyte.

I don't know why you are implying that pixel art is done by people with low skill, there aremodern games that look amazing like Blasphemous. Nowadays, it isn't always about retro-inspired graphics for the nostalgia of it all, it became a legitimately art style that many developers use just because they like it, if you don't like raw pixels, you are welcome to play these newer games on a CRT I guess.

@@deleteTF Agreed with this. Pixel art is genuinely just more pleasing to the eyes for a lot of people. Not to say that there are no "disingenuous" implementations of it, but it's certainly not the majority.
