At least Super Mario 64 was in my childhood too but I mostly played this alone because everyone just wanted the newest game. I know Nintendo asked people to put their cameras away when showing this because they claimed it was confidential and unfinished at the time, but I'm actually very happy that someone decided to release this to the public. With the awesome reputation and respect Nintendo gets I'd expect nobody to be disappointed or to lose faith in the new concept of a game.

There are some of the objects of the beta in the files that don't appear in the final game, of what I've heard Super Mario Sunshine was initially being developed with a different engine, that's why textures and models look worse and different in the beta than on the final game

It's wild to see how bland the colors look. Everything is colored very lifelike and drab. Sunshine is my favorite Mario game of all time, for reasons I could go on and on about. So to see how much content was scrapped, assets unused, regional differences, and especially this Beta version that looks like a complete 180 compared to the finished product. It's such a satisfying thing. When you think you know a game inside and out but you find out there's so much more to learn. This exists out there somewhere in a playable form. Hopefully one day we will see it.

I learned that even five additional worlds were planned to appear in this game but due to time constraints those were discarded in an early state of development. Too bad, I would have liked to see them, and maybe they could have added more missions instead of having to collect blue coins to get more Shine Sprites. Also that giant creature wandering around the town must be Hinokuri, a boss character that was also discarded.

This is easily the most mysterious piece of beta media. In less than a year, they reworked that town into what we now call "Delfino Plaza." It's just so mysterious... the entire beta of this game is so mysterious. Like that girl, Nico, were there supposed to be more humans like her? And what about the plot of the story? Would Bowser Jr. still be the main antagonist? Or would it take another approach? So many questions, so little answers. All of this is what makes it so mysterious...

I gotta say - this footage looks amazingly "beta"! Or, to use a more contemporary term, it "screams" beta. It's amazing how much they changed the layout of the place! The paint also looks rather different, and the gigantic walking thing looks pretty interesting. The graphics are, naturally, "beta" graphics - not much texture, rough polygons, etcetera! The gameplay looks solid, though. I can't help but wonder what the original vision of SMS was set to look like...

I like that Mario had F.L.U.D.D. (or its precursor) on for the entire video, and yet there was no water-shooting and hovering shown in the video...that was basically the main selling point for Super Mario Sunshine.

I'm here 3 years late, but indeed, they didn't want the idea of the water pump to be stolen, can't remember where I read an interview of Koizumi and Miyamoto, basically Koizumi came up with the idea of a water pistol after he felt the gamecube controller triggers. The game wasn't supposed to be a Mario game, but after many ideas to make the game work the team behind this project came up with Mario as the main character, initially he was going to carry a water gun, but due to having possible problems in America they changed it to a water pump. When hey showed this at SpaceWorld 2001 the game was in a very early phase so they didn't want the idea to be stolen, that's why Miyamoto asks everyone to not take footage, he even jokes with the audience about the idea being stolen lol.

Would you believe this trailer is comprised of footage that they shot in Mario's home town in 2000 when they were still looking for ideal locations to shoot the game? In an interview conducted around the game's release, Mario said that this session went on for about a week. His Mother know of it so she could just look out of her window and she could see her little Movie Star jumping around. Seriously, it's too bad we can't access these levels with Action Reply.
