I can read the hiragana and some of the kanji so this video can actually be helpful… but jesus, the speed at which this is going. I have difficulty believing a child would fare any better

Growing up surrounded by both spoken and written Japanese, 1st graders would likely have way higher fluency than either of us. It's going too fast for me as well, but American 6/7 year olds can speak and understand English just fine, so this is more of a reading-along exercise.

Mario is such a great character. Nintendo should make some kind of driving game featuring the main characters from the Mario games.

Such a cool time capsule. Even if KZbin's translated captions are extremely limited, I really enjoy what I can see! 😀

*Mayumi Tanaka* voiced Mario?! Crazy! But as a Dragon Ball fan, I can't help but hear Kulilin. She actually voices everyone in this video, tho. Since this is about learning kanjies... 田中 真弓 (Ta-naka, Ma-yumi): rice paddy, inside, and Mayumi Spindle (a type of tree). 真弓 (ma-yumi) while meaning the tree, can be broken down into 真 (ma), meaning "true" and 弓 (yumi) meaning "bow" (as in archery).

"Pff, this is dumb. Who cares about learning?" *skates out of classroom while doing a Kickflip* joking aside this is quite nice.

OK, so- I'm almost 3 minutes in. It's basically teaching them the Kanji by telling a story & highlighting each Kanji whenever they say it, then. I suppose that's effective enough, for kids. I always wondered how the heck they actually taught kids how to read that stuff, over there.

EDIT: Or, I guess, has the words in regular type & trades them out for the proper Kanji as its being read.

they have notebooks they have to fill every single day for hours and hours repeating each kanji many times over. there is no other way really, it's like learning derivatives when you study calculus. only way to learn is mechanical repetition.

@@83hjf It's not the only way- it's just a way that works if you have years to spend on it. Those of us who acquire Japanese as a second language have to compress it into a lot less time so do less repetition and take shortcuts like using kanji you know in new combinations to rapidly increase your vocabulary. After the first 800 or so you start to see similarities with the kanji as well and based on their component parts might be able to guess meanings.

The much better way to learn kanji is play video games. Better to play something good than watch this video tape with game characters😕

This seems like it has minimal educational value but the goal is selling something with Mario's face on it most likely.
