A compilation of cutscenes from Nintendo's 1994 Game Boy game, Donkey Kong.
Recordings come from the game running on the Super Game Boy.

I always appreciated the incredible versatility of Mario's moveset in DK94, but even more than that, I appreciated the classy way it avoided grinding the game to a halt to give a tutorial.
After every few stages, Mario and Donkey Kong face off in battle. Once Mario wins, DK grabs Pauline and takes off and a cutscene begins. These usually involve a smug-looking Donkey Kong escaping to the opposite side of some obstacle that will appear in the coming stages. Instead of the game giving you dialogue boxes full of instructions, Mario demonstrates how to overcome these obstacles in the cutscenes themselves before resuming the chase.
They're effective, often quite funny, and an overall brilliant way of showing the player how to proceed. Why haven't more games done this?
Anyways, I always loved these scenes, and so I thought it'd be fun to pull them all together in this little mini-movie.

Man, I LOVE these cutscenes. Not only are they charming and entertaining, but they also demonstrate the game's gimmicks and mechanics, usually ones introduced in the next world.

It was also the introduction to Modern DK, as the DK in this game has a red tie, as opposed to no tie at all in the Arcade game. Cranky would be known as the OG Arcade DK because of this fact.

Donkey Kong was originally going to be a Popeye game, but was already re-tooled as a Donkey Kong and Mario. (Although, there's already a Popeye game on the NES).

What a hell of a game Donkey Kong '94 was. Too bad the Mario vs. DK series couldn't live up to the greatness of that game. Kind of like Yoshi's Island Syndrome where the first game is amazing and the following games are varying degrees of okay.

Yeah, it would've been fantastic as a GBA remake with a similar level of skill went into crafting the original. The thing about the GBA was, unlike the DS and 3DS, developers were mostly forced to create 2D sprite art for games, and IMO they looked the better for it. I'm thinking games like the Sonic Advance series, Pokemon, Mario $ Luigi, Minish Cap, etc. Mario Kart Super Circuit used a mix of pre-rendered and 2d graphics to good effect, but the pre-rendered sprites in Mario vs Donkey Kong look bland and horribly compressed.

At some point it got turned into Mario vs Donkey Kong. I read about "Donkey Kong Plus" in Nintendo Power and was super disappointed with what we ended up with. Not a bad game but not as good as this. This is one of the all-time greatest platformers. I'm curious as to what happened to the guy who directed this... he also did Mole Mania, another masterpiece, and then he just disappeared.

VanguardSupreme What I would like to see is a Mario VS. DK game going back to this style in both gameplay (including mid-stage battles) & the tutorial cutscenes, as well as the best elements of the 1st Mario VS. DK game on the GBA. And that Diddy Kong is a secondary nuisance.

Unlikely as they remade the inferior "Mario VS DK" GBA game instead. I mean, it's a good game too, but lacked the unique settings, (they're all very generic city, forest, or jungle stages) had fewer cutscenes, and most puzzles relied too much on the color switches. DK94 has more variety, and challenge. The only things MvsDK did better were some of the boss battles were creative, and the Mini Mario stages before a boss were neat. But overall MvsDK feels like an Inferior sequel.

I honestly have to applaud Mario here, if you played the game, you'll know he's very vulnerable, and the whole world is extremely dangerous. And despite that, he continues to chase after Donkey Kong. He never gives up, no matter how much pain he endures. And after all the pain he endures, he refuses to hurt DK after the final boss, he truly has no enemies. Be like Mario
