Super Mario Land 2 DX: 6 Golden Coins (Game Boy Color) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

A playthrough of Nintendo's 1992 platformer for the Nintendo Game Boy, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins.
The game, as I am playing it here, has been patched with Toruzz's "Super Mario Land 2 DX" patch that was released on Christmas. What an excellent update to the original Game Boy game this is. The game now runs perfectly in full color on real GBC hardware, and sports a a few tweaks and options to further improve the game. For all intents and purposes, it's the same game as the original 1992 release, but after you see it, you won't want to go back to the green-screen original.

The original game was a fantastic follow-up to the original Mario launch title on the Game Boy, adapting pieces of Mario 3 and Mario World to its own unique (and at times bizarre) take on the world-famous plumber. It certainly still feels like Yokoi's style more than it does Miyamoto's.
Anyway, this patch is fantastic. I can't imagine how much work must have gone into it - this isn't a slap-dash job with Super Game Boy style palettes globbed across everything. All of the graphics have been completely colored as individual elements and it all looks like a completely legit Nintendo Zelda DX-style upgrade for how professionally it has been done. There aren't any glitches or distortions in the graphics from the modification whatsoever - it looks like it was originally designed this way. And it makes full use of the GBC's graphics capabilities, so don't be surprised when you start to realize how just how much better it looks than an NES game. Props to Toruzz for such quality work - thanks!

The best Mario Game Boy game ever created IMO. The music ranks up there with Koji Kondo's composition, the new enemies are creative, fun, and even cute, and we still have plenty of classic SMB enemies. They brought over things from SMW I didn't think they would be able to fit in a Game Boy game, such as drill jumping, picking up shells, and a replay-able map. The bunny ears power up is ingenious, and the way they were able to up the ante graphically speaking with the original limitations was just excellent. It makes the first SML look like a beta by comparison. And this color redux? Excellent!!

What's even weirder is that the coloration of Super Mario Land 2 was hard-coded into the GameBoy Color, meaning Nintendo could have chosen the correct colors, yet didn't. I think it was because of the lack of screen lighting that they painted everything in light turquoise.

My story of Nintendo Gameboy (It's Real) In 2010, I was 8 years old, I had a friend in school who was kind of a short tempered guy but kind. One day the teacher scolded him for no reason(he got blamed for something he didn't do), so he got angry and waited for teacher to continue the lecture, as lecture resumed he took out a Nintendo Gameboy Color (at that time I didn't know anything about those) and he started playing this Mario game( the game in this video) in the middle of the lecture with full volume(we all heard the background music, and music of Mario taking coins),teacher noticed him and they had a good argument till the bell rang. It was lunch break, I approached him I really wanted to know more about that Nintendo Gameboy, I can't believe he wanted to exchange it with me in place of a comic book.I agreed and took it home but then realized it was unfair, anyway I played it for a few days (almost completed the game) and returned it.. I left that school an year later, Sadly I am not in contact with him anymore, I haven't seen him for like 7 years, idk a thing about him. All I remember is his Face and his Gameboy. I have been looking for this game for Years, all I could remember was a thing named Nintendo, the image of that bird boss and sound of Mario flying with those bunny ears. I am soo happy today I found this video. It brings old memories back. I lost contact will all my friends of that school. Kinda sad for me... I hope I'll meet them someday.

Wario's major debut. Sadly like Daisy, this game was his only appearance in the main Super Mario series, Super Mario 64 remake on DS aside. But thankfully, unlike the former, Wario became instantly popular as a character enough to become the star of his own series afterwards.

Not only is this Mario-game way different in some way I cant really explain, but its the only Mario game which doesnt only make me feel nostalgic but also rather melancholic. Its like its overlooked, not liked very much, while still giving its best to entertain you, and therefore it has its own charme - an effort that you just have to appreciate. I guess thats why I feel melancholic about that game.

I guess that would be fitting considering the fate of the guy that created it, Gunpei Yokoi. After making Nintendo obscene amounts of money by creating the Metroid series and the Game Boy system, they completely scapegoated and disgraced him because of the Virtual Boy, and he died a violent, tragic death after being hit by a couple of cars on a freeway just a few years later. Poor guy. Melancholy really is the perfect word there.

Yesterday,I had an idea for a new 2D Mario platformer. The plot would be that a new island emerges to the surface and begin to flood the Earth with magic,which is lethal for the wildlife,so Princess Peach send Mario and Luigi an letter for an important meeting in her castle. After,they go on a expedition to Stardust Island(the site where the game takes place),it's up to Mario and Luigi to explore the island to find 7 segments of a serum,and find the culprit. This game,instead of being another rehash of New Super Mario Bros Wii,it's a spiritual sequel of Super Mario Land 2(we acess the worlds in a huge map and we can play them in the order we want) with new powerups,unique bosses and level themes,lots of elements of the old Mario games and more

Amazing job! Looks great! I especially love the touch where the Fireball Mario has the colors instead of the signifier on the hat! :) On a different note: WHY did Nintendo put different sounds to 1UPs etc in the Gameboy versions??
