What happens if your object isn't symmetrical to begin with? (Unlike your cube that's perfectly symmetrical.)

Would you by chance know how to set hotkeys for the different symmetry types? I'm not really that into MEL but even so because the symmetry option is not a button its quite hard to make heads or tails of the script that is spit out when you try and make a hotkey. I really have looked around and as usual Autodesk is no help and I can't find any info on which particular command I need to write so i can attach it to a hotkey.
