Hi Marion, it was a pleasure giving you the little bag of oddments from my shop when you visited the town the other week. You are clearly an inspiration to others and I really enjoyed our chat. So pleased you have used some of the items as well as given some away in this Giveaway Sewing Basket at the end of this video. Be sure to pop in again when you next pass as I have some more bits waiting for you. Lee

My favourite hobby is to find old sewing baskets, boxes and tins filled with someone’s sewing bits and bobs then take it home and sort through the contents. I always think about the person who had collected these items over the years and marvel at the special treasures I find hidden under jumbles of ribbons, threads, laces, bias binding and elastic. I have a special love for buttons, old embroidered name labels, thimbles, pincushions and needle cases. It never bothers me if they are worn or faded - to me I shows that these items were used and cherished. I imagine the original owner sitting in her comfy chair by the fire as she mends clothes and linens in a time before we became such a throw away society. ❤️

I call it the archeology of sewing paraphernalia. 😊 It's thrilling to hold an artefact in one's hands that someone from long ago used and perhaps cherished. Whether it's beads, lace, a bodkin, a sewing bird, or whatever it may be, it's a connection to the past and a person long passed. Blessings, my sewist sister!

Marion, you are a true treasure. I ‘found’ your channel late last night (I’m in Australia). I just smiled and smiled watching your video and then I cried because I feel like we are so similar in many ways. I’ve been horribly unwell for a month and have managed to hand quilt a cot sized quilt using my thrifted embroidery threads so to find you made me so happy. I thrift all of my threads and with having pneumonia and also having 11 children (yes, you read that right) it has been very difficult (on my body and heart during my time of being unwell. My children are a pure joy). All I could manage was to lay in bed and have my baby brought to me for me to feed. THANK YOU for being such a bright spot from my sick bed. God bless. Katherine.

Hello Katherine. I'm so sorry that you haven' been very well. Dealing with 11 children, having pneumonia and being in the heat sounds awful... I'm glad that my little thrifting video brought you some joy. I thrift almost all my supplies but these days I feel I just don't need anything. Which is why I shouldn't have brought the little sewing box home. Things have to go somewhere in the end and I got fed up of just moving my 'stuff' around. If you are on Instagram you can message me through that if you feel you would like to. Sending healing thoughts your way...and hope you are feeling a bit better since last week.

@@marionsworld24 such a shame, I desperately wanted a treadle machine, just because they are so beautiful. Loved the trip to the car boot! We don’t really have anything like that here, especially in the summer, it was 118* F yesterday! What we consider “old” is practically new by your standards. I live in Arizona in the U S and we have only been a state for just over 100 years, practically a newborn by European standards. I have stitched and sewn for all my life, I can’t remember “not” knowing how to sew. Embroidery and slow stitch are my first love, but I quilt, sew, knit, crochet and more. Like you, there are never enough hours in the day! I’ve followed you since nearly the beginning and have learned so much from you, least of which has been the enjoyment of watching you grow from a shy novice to a real pro in the Facebook world! Love you, Marion!

The embosser is just a glorious blend of form and function, like the sewing machine. The sewing box reminded me of my grandmother and mother (although I have her basket and it’s round). The tray - along with the bits and bobs - were wonderful to see. I would love it, although I appreciate that I don’t need it, but these are evocative items that bring such joy. I know it will go to a great home whoever is drawn. And I am so looking forward to seeing what you do with all that glorious fabric. You’ve inspired me to start using items inherited from my family. I’ve hoarded them for decades - afraid of using them in case I ‘spoil’ them. Madness. So thank you. I’ve already won because of that.
@marionsworld246 ай бұрын
Oh Shelley... Great message. I too used to hoard things years ago. As you say.... frightened of spoiling them. That stopped after a shelf in my Mam's china cabinet collapsed and she was so upset that a beautiful teaset belonging to her Grandma had been smashed and she said it had never been used! By anyone.... To me that seemed more upsetting than the breakages and I came home determined to use my things or else give them away. I think about the purpose something was made for... I use it... If it breaks or gets a mark I just think it's part of its life...in the same way that we age and things happen. I don't keep anything ' for best'. Best is every day...☺️

@@marionsworld24 Your message is so lovely. Thank you. My mother was a Loughborough lass, always called my Grandma ‘Mam’. Tears in my eyes. I’ve been using Grandma’s embroidery threads and just finished some designs she’d ironed on 40 years ago. Felt like I was holding her hand when I was working on those pieces. Some might say it’s foolish, but to me it felt like love. And yes, as you say, it’s all part of its life. I’ve made those embroideries in honour of Florrie. Hope she’d be pleased they didn’t go to waste. 💜

We call them 'car boot sales' as you sell from your car's boot. They are a UK tradition, nearly always held very early on a Sunday morning, most towns have them during the spring, summer and autumn months. But occasionally you will find one run on a weekday or a Sat. We also have 'jumble sales' which are pretty much the same thing, but indoors on fold out tables rather than outside from a car.

Loved seeing this. I’ve been thrifting for many years. Have found many treasures. So fun. Often much better quality than can be found in modern stores.

I always feel peacefully inspired by your videos. I love just watching you stitch or whatever you are doing, but also you make me want to do it myself. Thank you.

Lovely market stalls Marion. I spied a Sooty hand puppet on one of the tables. Loved Sooty , Sweep and Su from my childhood and I have the puppets from my son's.👏♥️🇦🇺

I have a new appreciation for “thrifting” now, Marion! Thanks for opening my eyes…! I’m a little jealous of your “find” in that antique sewing machine. I d love to see some videos of your revitalization process when you get around to it! Thanks!

This was so fun to watch! Thank you for all of the thrifting ideas! We don't have the lovely outdoor markets as you do. The UK is lovely and the people so friendly! From Alabama USA

This video was so much fun! I have a hard time walking away from things at the thrift store, especially something as sweet as those sewing boxes and tins! Amazing find on the sewing machine, I love restoring antique machines. ❤

Marion, I just stumbled upon your adventure and it made my day. I felt as if I was finding treasures along with you. Thank you for the fun! I would love the sewing box as I get lost in taking scraps of fabric from here and there for slow stitching…my favorite escape after work. I subscribed so I can follow more of your adventures.

Thank you for sharing this treasure hunt trip with us. There was certainly a lot to behold! I too enjoy collecting and repurposing the treasures that I find and also have a new found appreciation for antique sewing machines. That Singer will be a beauty with a bit of oil and cleaning! Great find for sure!

Amazing finds Marion! I have a round wicker sewing basket, that I will be giving it to my 8 year old granddaughter who is showing an interest in needlework. I bought it about 50 years ago, and unfortunately, the little tray has gotten lost. But she will have something to put her things in. And what a wonderful old Singer you found there. I inherited a 1923 Singer with a cabinet and foot pedal from my great-grandmother, which I actually used as my first machine. After moving into a smaller home recently, I passed it on to my daughter. I would have loved to keep it but I know my daughter will take good care of it. I really enjoy all the good advice and tips you share with us. Thank you, Louise
