Damn, that was some good assed dope they had in the 80's!!! She ran a 400M in full sprint, finished, then had tons of energy to jog even more at the finish line. This record clearly should not exist...not possible to run a 400M clean, especially in full sprint without pacing strategy, and not feel like you're gonna die at the end of the race and for days after!

@@timn4481 please elaborate. By the way, many folks have taken their 100M time down that much…Shericka took her time down in both events even more than FloJo. You may surprise yourself if you look at the annual progression of your favorite athletes today. Also, while it’s obvious 50 lbs of body weight is enhanced, 3 seconds off a 400M is possible if your time isn’t very fast. But, if off world record times, yeah, that wouldn’t make sense.

Koch's 200m world record was broken by an athlete from the same era who Marita used to routinely beat by around 3m in major championship races over the distance - the athletes name? American 'superstar' Flo Jo - who miraculously improved out of all recognition very late in her career to break the 100m and 200m WR's, which still stand - Flo Jo retired almost immediately afterwards, and just prior to the introduction of out of season testing being introduced. Sadly, many utterly deluded Americans to this day will swear on a stack of bibles she was clean when she broke those records! I had a photograph of Flo Jo 2 years before her WR breaking exploits and one at the time she broke those records. And took them into a top London hardcore gym where elite level women bodybuilders trained. Without letting them see Flo Jo's face, i asked them if the woman in the photo's could have changed her physical appearance naturally, through hard weight training and good nutrition. They were adamant her physical change had not been achieved naturally. I said "how can you be so sure?" Because "we have used just about every strength and muscle building PED on the market, and know the side effects/body changes associated with each group of these drugs - she is displaying some of these 'side effects' to the extent that we can actually tell you the specific group/type of PEDs' she has been using!" With women's track records out of reach for even admitted druggies, the WR book needs to be wiped clean. The fairest solution would be to remove every mark set before track and field instituted random drug testing in the wake of the Seoul Olympics. That would get Kratochvilova, Koch, and Flo Jo off the books. Such a move would quickly raise the profile of women's track. Remove Griffith Joyner, and the 100-meter mark would have been broken six times since 1996, by such never-got-their-due athletes as Carmelita Jeter and Frenchwoman Christine Arron, who missed out on meet bonuses and endorsement contracts because they were pursuing an impossible standard. Athletics fans may just have to think of the 1980s in the same way baseball fans think of the late '90s and early '00s-as an era whose achievements don't deserve to be included in a Platonic Book of Records.

@johnblack80369 жыл бұрын
Koch was obviously on drugs at the time of this race. There are letters she wrote to Jenapharm complaining that she was not getting enough testosterone in the early 80's. Well she must have gotten the right dose in this race. Regardless, Koch was an extremely gifted runner exhibiting near perfect mechanics even from a very early age. She would have smoked her competition even without the drugs. Given her already other-worldly talent, the Oral-Turnibol turned her into a superhuman. Just look at the first 200 meters of this race. She made up the stagger on four of her competitors in about 4 seconds. Just imagine if the Russian girl hadn't been in this race. She would have won by almost 70 meters. That's just crazy. I've taken testosterone and it does make a difference. It just allows you to work and train harder in addition to increasing muscle mass. In woman, the difference is even more drastic. She didn't need the drugs to win and that's a shame.

That was my point. All of the top track athletes in those days were on it. I know Bryzgina was taking something for her to be that close to Koch. It kind of confirms that FloJo was doping also. Watch the 1988 4x400 anchor leg. Bryzgina ended up beating her but for FloJo, who had no experience at that distance to come out run that close to the Olympic Champion, you've got to be taking something.

However, the motive for the idea of possible adjunct records would not be for punishment of Koch, Flo Jo or anyone else; but to make the sport as fair to everyone as possible. @@stevebbuk Wikipedia says - Koch's achievements, along with the performances of many other East German female athletes, have long been under suspicion that they were achieved with the aid of performance-enhancing drugs.[9] These drugs were and remain illegal, but were not detectable at the time. In 1991, German anti-drug activists Brigitte Berendonk and Werner Franke, were able to save several doctoral theses and other documents written by scientists working for the East German drug research programme. The documents list the dosage and timetables for the administration of anabolic steroids to many athletes of the former DDR, with one of them being Marita Koch. According to the sources, Koch did use the anabolic steroid Oral-Turinabol (4-Chlorodehydromethyltestosterone) from 1981 to 1984 with dosages ranging from 530 to 1460 mg/year.[

Man, 48.25 is an incredible deal. Vladikynas 48.25 was the second best time in 400m for years after kochs 47.60. Ill tell you something; runnig under 11 sec in 100m, 22 sec in 200m and 49 in 400m is not possible without using drugs. Check Grit Breuer from GDR in Split (European Championships 1990). She ran over 49 and she was full of steroids. Perec can be your idol but it doesnt mean shes clean.

People talk as though modern athletes are not taking performance enhancing drugs, and they most certainly are. Christine Ohuruogu (who served a ban for doping) has a 400m personal best of 49.41 which is a disgrace compared to Marita Koch.

In any era you can only ever be judged against your peers. In Koch's case, she was way way way better than anyone else. She set numerous world records from 60-400m and would STILL be a multiple gold winner if she was racing today in her prime without drugs. (But nobody ain't ever gonna convince me that the present sprinters are clean either). Best female sprinter of all time, and this WR record will probably still be here in the next century.

When Koch ran WR 47.60 she took off like a cut cat... her reported split times were remarkable: 100m 11.3 sec 200m 22.4 sec 300m 34.2 sec I predict that Koch's record of 47.60 will last many more decades to come. A well deserved record from the days when Women athletes put in the hard training needed to run WR performances.

Come on! Don't tell this is not doping! There are many reasons to believe that she was doped! 1. It was the 80's, everybody was using it, doping controls were not trustable and she competed for a country well known for its doping abuse. 2. She broke the world record by a huge margin (0.39) in a sprint and no one has ever come close to that. 3. Don't tell me that after running like that you are going to finish like nothing happened, just smiling. A natural athlete would be hyperventilated, feeling cramps and basically lying on the track. All DDR athletes were in the State Doping Program. Marita Koch would have been exceptional as an athlete without it, but we'll never know how exceptional. She might have done 49.0 without it, who knows? The same of course applies to Fast Flo. She had been one of the world's best sprinters for a decade, nudging a few hundredths off her best times over 100 and 200m in her best years (around 1985). Then all of a sudden, in 1988, at age 29, she comes out of nowhere (no previous races, just 'practice') to take half a second (that is 50/100s of a second!) off her best 100m and more than a second off her all-time best at 200m). That is AT LEAST as incredulous as Koch's performances. It showed in her physique too. I really felt for Eveleyn Ashford, who was by far the better sprinter in 1988 and should have taken the gold.

It's pretty clear to be honest. There are only very few athletes in all time who were quite so ahead of the pack in their sport. This race should have triggered an immediate drugs test, Ben Johnson was found to have doped after a similarly astounding performance in his event. But then msot of athletics and 99% of cycling is dirty. The others just haven't been caught. On the BBC's programme on Armstrong many cyclists admitted they knew fine well he was doping, they just never spoke out.
