OLD FATHER THAMES

OLD FATHER THAMES

Күн бұрын

Hello Tide Travellers! Join me back down on the foreshore to uncover maritime finds with a Royal Navy connection.
Help me identify some weird mystery finds, and hear more about one of the most curious competitions...ever?
As well a chunky finds relating to the working river, I've got lots of little finds to satisfy the metal maniacs amongst you.
Let's get cracking!

I have to admit that I have never heard of the salt lick contest and I have lived all my life in Oregon. That is an eastern Oregon high desert thing. Hahaha!

Oh this is a lovely video. The salt lick! I thought you stumbled across a bit of ambergris! Yes,we place salt licks out around here,in the wooded places for deer. It’s because their habitat is going away,it helps them out,and also helps to keep them from absolutely devouring our gardens! Also, the bone bits that you found,to be used for knife handles, etc, I have a few bits of mastodon ivory,I carved one into a little self portrait pendant, the other is still intact,a beautiful bit of semi-fossilized ivory. Ah! Monika is a treat! I had such a fun conversation with her at the maritime museum last year!

LOVE the salt lick competition, that's so strange USA (or how I imagine it to be, kinda drawing parallels with our strange folk customs such as cheese rolling!) We do have salt licks here too, I just would never have recognised it as such. As it is, Whit Deschner says he doubts very much that my weird find is salt lick, for obvious reasons...melting away in water. Ooh would like to see that self portrait pendant, that's cool. Yeah Monika is a font of info and will happily chat for hours!

It's gypsum, it is found in the cliffs here on the Coast of West Somerset UK. We have an old working harbour here so maybe that's how it got to London . Some folks call it alabaster. My father was a geologist so I know a few rocks lol I think it's used in th production of plaster?

Hey Rebecca! Thanks for that, yes gypsum/alabaster seems to be the resounding answer. It is indeed used for plaster (I used to use a lot of plaster so that bit I do know haha).
