@InspiringPhilosophy Hey, Michael! You should do a video about whether or not verses 9-20 should be included in Mark 16, and whether or not they are accurate, and written by Mark. All sorts of Bibles now are counting those verses out, either bracketing them, or discluding them from the text. And when those verses are removed, there are no post-resurrection appearances of Jesus recorded in the gospel.

@@RDR12344 You can say 1+1=2, and someone will say that’s wrong. That someone disagrees is not evidence. Truth is not defined by those who discern or reject it. A friendly warning: You can send a criminal to capital punishment based on evidence “beyond reasonable doubt,” which does not require absence of doubt. You can impose ruinous, crippling debt on someone based on “preponderance of evidence,” which means their opponent just needs slightly better evidence. Both are examples of faith (before it was misdefined by pop atheists). Faith does not require absolute proof; it means trusting the explanation of the evidence that has the most explanatory power. It's because the gospel's being reliable eye-witness accounts are integral to the foundation of christianity, the death and resurrection of Jesus. If the gospels aren't reliable eye-witness accounts, then the claims of Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection have no ground to stand on, that's why muslims, atheists, and critical scholars try so discredit it.

I believe that Luke's gospel also contains various passages that likely came from direct translations of Aramaic. In particular much of the infancy narrative in Luke seems to be derived from an Aramaic source. This seems to support the idea that Mary herself could have provided the details of said story in Luke.

I think certain sceptics like Paulogia are too quick to dismiss the Gospels as distant hearsay and/or embellishment legends written down by annonymous Christians with the reasoning sometimes being based on the presence of miracles since even if the traditional 4 men weren't correct that wouldn't necessarily mean they couldn't be based on eyewitness testimony and must be those options instead. I think a lot of it comes from an ontological prejudice against miracles. And, more importantly, a strong assumption against the extraordinary. In my opinion, these biases don't just run against the miraculous, but extraordinary events in general. Leibniz, the philosopher famed for calculus and monads, made a point that God never does things out of order, so that miracles aren't necessarily against created orders (perhaps we can say natural laws), but rather are against our ordinary experience. I think Leibniz could be correct, in that the prejudice against miracles is a prejudice and projection of ordinary experience (example: "I've never seen it, ergo it can't happen"), rather than an appeal to true natural order and regularity.

Aside from the fact that Mark’s connection to Peter was well known among the early church fathers and is attested by other parts of the New Testament (1 Pet 5:13; Acts 12:12-17), the Gospel of Mark itself draws connections to Peter by forming another literary inclusio that centers on Peter himself-the first disciple mentioned in Mark is Peter (Mk 1:16) and the last disciple mentioned is Peter (Mk 16:7). Moreover, both of these mentions of Peter are quite emphatic-Mark goes out of his way to bring Peter to the forefront of each passage. This Petrine inclusio, combined with the inordinately high number of times the name Peter occurs in the Gospel and the manner in which Peter dominates the narratives of the disciples, makes it clear that Peter was to be understood as the “main eyewitness source behind Mark’s gospel.” Hengel observes, “Simon Peter is as a disciple named first and last in the Gospel to show that it is based on his tradition and therefore his authority.” Martin Hengel, The Four Gospels and the One Gospel of Jesus Christ (Harrisburg, PA: Trinity Press International, 2000)

Great video. I think that (i) the unanimous testimony of the Church fathers (including Papias who was collecting his information when some disciples of Jesus were still alive- Aristion and John the Elder) and (ii) the extensive internal evidence (the names correctly reflecting 1st Century Judea, the listing of the 12 disciples by name, the specific naming of a few not so relevant individuals for no particular reason other than seemingly because these persons were known- e.g., Simon of Cyrene father of Alexander and Rufus, the early semitism in some passages suggesting authentic sayings, the description of Jewish customs pre-70AD, not mentioning the destruction of the Temple, the relative modest claims about Jesus travels - as opposed to Apollonius of Tyana who traveled to Rome, India, and Spain according to Philostratus, etc.) both point toward the very probable fact that Mark was an early Gospel written by an eyewitness of Peter.

4:10 He mentions again that the authors of Matthew and Luke used Mark. It's very interesting that neither of those texts ever mention their sources. Even in Acts, when John Mark (who may or may not be the same Mark that supposedly wrote the gospel) is mentioned, it never mentions that this person wrote the primary source of the gospel.

Hey, Michael!

3:40 He gives a number of attestations from Irenaeus and later authors, which is fine. Now he displays the text where Eusebius cites Papias. The problem here is that nothing connects the claims of Papias to the gospel of Mark as we know it. The description given in this citation doesn't match with the gospel of Mark, and he never even mentions that it would be about a gospel at all. Papias could be talking about a completely different document here. All we can do is speculate.

Uh, Crossley is and Casey was an atheist so they obviously don't believe any of the supernatural stuff was actually eyewitnessed by anyone. Casey makes this clear in his book Jesus of Nazareth. I obviously was. But remember my argument for that section was two-fold. If Casey notes the Aramaic sources came from a member of the 12 and unanimous church tradition is that Mark’s source was Peter then the simplest explanation is Peter is Mark’s source. Casey doesn’t go that far but I added additional details to support the inference.

The Coptic Church, which was founded by Mark the Evangelist, holds the tradition that Mark was himself an eyewitness. Mark is equated with John Mark, he is said to be the man with rhe pitcher who's home was where the Last Supper took place, the man who ran from Gethsemane naked, and one of the 70 apostles. He is titled the "Beholder of God" for this reason because there was early opposition to Mark being an eyewitness which was evident in the writing of Eusebius who quotes Papias (who quotes John the Elder) stating Mark did not see Christ. This is only attested to in Eusebius, and while it may be reliable as an accurate quote from Papias quoting the Elder, it should be noted that Eusebius stood opposed to Athanasius (Coptic Pope) several times during the Arian controversy and may have had motive to discredit the see of Alexandria. Of course that's speculation.

1:15 IP claims that there is unanimous agreement from the church fathers that the gospel authors are Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. There are two problems with this claim. The first problem is that he displays a table from Gathercole, but that table is unreasonable optimistic with attestations. The second problem is the biggest problem, namely selection bias. He explicitly mentions the term 'church fathers', which by definition excludes people that were later considered heretics. For example, we know that Marcion rejected Lukan authorship of the gospel of Luke, but since people later declared him to be a heretic (he was not declared a heretic during his lifetime, and was far more influential then almost all of the people/texts in Gathercole's list), his testimony is thrown out. Rejecting any of the canonical gospels was sufficient ground for later Christians to declare someone a heretic, so if someone rejected traditional authorship, they would almost certainly not be regarded as a church father. This makes the claim circular. There is another type of selection bias going on that doesn't come from IP, but from scribal activity over a thousand years ago. If we find a ninth century manuscript of a second century text, that means it must be copied in the second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth century. That only happens if the people who pay scribes consider the text to be worthy of copying. Thus, if there is a text that rejects traditional authorship, we really shouldn't expect to find any manuscripts of it.

I quite like these videos that give tons of really solid info about the Bible and its reliability. I have used these videos to show that the Bible I love to read is actually reliable, most people do not know that the Bible is reliable, most people have not opened a Bible in their life. But if people like skeptics would come to the table with an open mind, they would find that the Bible is reliable, and that indeed, Jesus rose from the dead, thus, He is the Son of God.
