There’s also a difference between owning the team and being a player, which is what they talk about. "Then where is the money?" Lahey asked the golden question. As a Chiense American working in Asia the past ten years, it is all about scale. China has 1.4 billion people and many teenagers are gamers. The power niches in USA that sit at the throne are still MLB, NBA, and NFL. 🏆At the very end, personal branding KINGS make the most money like Ninja. Teams and tournaments are just platforms. Media coverage also plays a major role. King James for example crosses over to food, fashion, and media and this gives them more media opportunities. At the very end, we live in the ATTENTION economy. Those who can get our attention wins.

thats a really interesting take, I never thought of that huge difference between physical sports and esports about how the best player in an esport can be worthless in a matter of months if the meta shifts in the wrong way, whereas in sports the same skill is always valued. It's unheard of for a sport to have an update or a change to how the game is played so its more reliable like that, very interesting.

The meta shifted to the SG and AUG a few months ago, they then nerfed the Aug and just today pushed out an update which elevates the price of the SG to 3000. Streamers need to make their schedule like a normal 8-5 job. Those that 24 hours weekly, are gonna hit a brick wall of depression. 8 hours streams are more than reasonable, you’ll still have a life, if you want to work weekends, you can. The other thing about being a streamer, is that you have to watch what you say at all times, because cancel culture is a real thing, especially with being a streamer. One minute you could be getting 14k viewers, and all of sudden you’re down to 1k. Sure that’s a lot, but financially and mentally that’s a disaster.

@SalvadorXX98

But that’s no different than a daily vlogger or an instagram account. Maintaining engagement while preventing a burnout happens a lot in the entertainment/social media industry. Even a big actor has to weigh the pros and cons of being too accessible to the people for their own mental well-being. 8 hours streaming can still be more than exhausting if the only thing the chat is interested in is your personal life off stream. There’s no perfect formula that will work for every Internet personality.

You're literally a nobody and this makes no sense. Streamers make money from brand deals an sponsor ships. They can't make their own schedule because they are on the schedule of whoever is sponsoring them after the stream, such as meetings appearances interviews etc. All those small streamers you watch have bullshit jobs and stream after.

Teams in other countries operate at a loss too, but they were never meant to be profitable in the first place. Teams in China and Korea are backed by large corporations, and are simply a cheaper form of advertisement. Emerging region teams are the same, but with the double whammy of paying next to nothing for players, staff, and equipment. European teams are probably somewhere in the middle.

E-sports and (a lot of) women's sports are the same: · Look flashy · The media loves it · Almost no repercussion · Almost no live spectators (at least not if you make them pay like they'd pay in big sports) · Very small merchandising numbers · Huge pits of money League of Legends is only getting big attendance numbers for the World finals and the tickets are rather cheap. Imagine only the Superbowl filling the stadium while all league games are only attended by like 5/10k people. Also, the TV/online spectator count of e-sports is laughable at best, even for the biggest events. Why would anybody invest in e-sports teams? No way to make your money back, let alone make it profitable!!!

john superhist the thing faze has going for them is that faze operates in more of the entertainment industry than a regular e-sport org. There’s plenty of e-sport orgs that haven’t been able to create an almost household name brand outside of the gaming community.

Hes absolutely right, esports in the west is really in its infancy. Its like the NFL was in the 60's and 70's. The players make pretty good money, but it did not have a good return on investment for the owners or the league. Buying into esports now will cost you a lot of money, and its a lot of money you may never get back. If you want your children to reap the rewards then maybe, but most investors aren't looking to invest in something that won't achieve true profits for decades.
