I wouldn't walk across the street to see them if he was in it. I'm not into this whole 70+ year old rock bands from back in the day thing, I don't want to see a bunch of geriatric senior citizens trying to act like they're still in their glory days, I'd just as soon listen to my old records and remember them the way they were on the posters on my bedroom wall and the t-shirts I had and leave it at that.

My favorite rock star!! Down to earth and a wonderful fascination for all things that the Lord Jesus Christ has to offer. Grand Funk Live and Phoenix albums were fantastic!! I saw them in Shreveport, LA in 1974 I think, I know they were touring the American Band Album. I had a backstage pass, I was sitting on the steps running up to the stage and Mark came up the stairs for a sound check, his shirt even touched my shoulder (I was 17 yrs old) dang I sound like a fascinated little girl. I could not see him so I moved to the side of the stage and was sitting on a drum seat watching my Idol playing that silver guitar. A guy came up and told me to not sit there, I showed him my pass and he smiled and introduced himself as the drum player for Wet Willie!

If I had one word to describe Mark, it's "unsinkable". I love that about him, it's a virtue worth acquiring. It's too bad about what happened with GFR, that band was key in the formative years of my rock and roll. Life goes on, bands rise and fall, people get screwed, and Mark just rolls with it. It's a beautiful thing.

I saw them in 71&72. Saw the reunion in 96. The 96 was musically more mature. All great. About a year ago a friend called me. Had tickets to Grand Funk Railroad. So I went. It was bad. For several reasons. I’ve seen Mark Farner three times. Farner is far and away musically ahead of the cover band. It’s a shame that Brewer and Shacher won’t do the right thing. The fans are taking the brunt of Brewer’s ego trip. And don’t give Mel a pass. He sides with Brewer. What’s a shame is the average younger fan probably doesn’t know the band’s current status and internal politics. So they’ll sell tickets. Just never again will I take a seat in their Sham Show.

Actually, their first album came out in 1969 but the band formed in 1968, so you're right - 55th anniversary is correct. What's going on is that the bogus GFR is advertising the "50th Anniversary Of We're An American Band" and "The American Band Tour 2023". If Don Brewer or Mel Schacher by some chance read this, shame on you for depriving the true fans an opportunity to see the REAL GFR one final time.

Farner still gettin’ a big charge out of having been a part of producing the corn that was put on the table at supper time when he was a kid makes me love the guy all the more!! He said it right when he used the word “GROUNDED” to the earth to describe himself. He is a grounded guy and a team player in this brotherhood of mankind. No pretentiousness -no arrogance -no “I’m famous so I’m better than the average Joe”. Farner is proud to be ONE OF US, the regular people. That is so rare and refreshing to see in a celebrity! He puts out love and respect and love and respect gets returned to him by his thousands of fans! I’m a fan of other musicians talents, but my feeling of admiration toward them as people on a personal level is nothing compared to what I feel toward Brother Mark Farner as I’ve easily felt of his generous warm caring soul thru the many interviews with him that I’ve watched. He’s one in a million! And a DANG good musician too!! Worldclass vocalist! Worldclass guitarist! Worldclass moves as a frontman! He’s got music running thru his veins! I think if you looked at Farner’s red blood cells under a microscope we’d find they’re all shaped like little music notes and guitars! Farner was, AND STILL IS, the FUNK in the Railroad. He’s the GRAND in it too! Always will be! This is my shout-out of Brotherly Love to Mark Farner! Thanks for all the years & decades of Good Singin’, Good Playin’!! May the rest of your days be filled with “EASY BREEZES” like the ones from those summers long ago on Uncle Jack’s farm! -Randall Arkansas USA

from what i can gather mel/don had tricked mark into signing over the legal right to perform as "grand funk" to mel and don ONLY, so mark cant legally perform as grand funk- only mel and don can- so they get all the $$$ associated with performing as grand funk (split 2 ways) as opposed to not being scum bags, keeping grand funk between ALL 3 of them and splitting profits 3 ways- not 2. . GUESSING don/mel knew damn well mark was the heart of band, so they didnt want to take chance of being shut out...CRAZY, Huh??!!!!

Great interview. Glad to see Mark is healthy and active. One of the best KZbin rock concert videos out there is this one: "Grand Funk Railroad - I'm Your Captain - Shea Stadium 1971". The crew that filmed the concert did an incredible job capturing energy of both the band and their fans.

I have seen the current "Grand Funk". A pale version of what they once were. I would not see them again. I did see Mark two years ago at an outdoor venue in Decatur, Illinois with Jim Paterek and the Ides Of March. They were excellent in less than ideal weather conditions. Mark was especially good. What a performer! My advice to Don and Mel, get back with Mark while you still can.

God bless Mark Farner! A Real "All American Boy" (forever young). He'll be The Voice and Heart of "Grand Funk" forever, regardless what Don and Mel will do or say. They might be 20/25% each of that band, but Mark is 50/60%. Everybody who is into GF knows that. And every time you see or hear Mark you'll learn something, if you know how to listen. Mark Farner RULES!!!

GFR , a top 3 man power trio in classic rock history. Why they are not tn the RHOF is beyond comprehensive. The GFR band of today is good but not the same as the original band. Classic rock bands are fading away. It ts a shame we couldn't see a band with all it's surviving members in tack. What a concert we all could see. Put GFR in the HOF where they belong and Come together one last time for one heck of a concert tour. Mark Don and Mel 1 more time.

On 12/2/1972 , when I was 14, I saw GFR in Tucson. It was the Mark Farner show. He played Organ, guitar, harmonica , vocals and a little drums.I think there was a couple other guys on stage with him. Great show that I'll never forget.

On a similar note, the Little River band, an Australian group, is currently touring without a single original member and I believe everyone in the band is American. Most of the original group is available and willing to tour but someone else owns the name and feels they can make more money without any of the original people there. And then there's deep purple, a band that has had so many people in it that you can't begin to think of it as anything like the original group. Yes is also another band where they are touring without a single original member, however the founder of the band is available but they won't let him in. It's too bad there's not some way to force bands to put disclaimers in front of their names.

Mark Farner is one of the guitarists I learned licks from. Grand Funk was the rockingest band of the 60's and 70's. Not everyone gets Frank Zappa to produce and play/sing on their album, which was one of their finest releases. Saw them 4 times before We're an American Band tour. It's just wrong to tour without him.

Yup. As a long-time sufferer of tinnitus, you are correct. It's a pet-peeve of mine. "I-T-I-S" is a suffix meaning "inflammation of". Tinitus isn't inflammation of anything, and it's even spelled differently. Words matter. Derivations provide insight and foundations of understanding. (There will be those who call us "grammar police" for trying to educate and clarify. I call them deliberately ignorant.)

wrong. I'm a musician and I've had it most of my adult life. Tin-uh-tus in how it's pronounced in England. In the US , it's Tin-eye-tus.

I might have told this before but here it goes. In the nineties I went to an outdoor festival and the Classic Rock Allstars were there. I didn't know who was in the band that year and they introduced Mark Farner and I just lost it I was yelling his name and you go man stuff like that. Suddenly I noticed everyone was turned toward me I said what's the matter and my wife said I think k you are the only person who knows who Mark Farner is. Freaked me out and after I came to myself Mark started playing a GFR song, I guess the crowd found out who he was that night. He has always been one of my favorite musicians.

Allicin -- the compound in Garlic... Yup you have to let it sit!! I'm right there with you brother... Cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar!!!! Also puts lead in the pencil-- good thing for a RnRoller, yes I know!! the Roman Legions would not march without it!! Have covered your stuff in bands, (bass) loved playing Captain -- people loved hearing it! Railroad may be my favorite... brings tears to my eyes, because I think of my Mother's father and great grandfathers, Italian immigrants, who worked hard on the railroad, but loved it because it was better than living under the socialism in Italy... By the way, my mother was the first of both sides of her family to go to college -- both sides worked to support her in her education. That's why they came to this country, that was the American dream, to work hard and enjoy the benefits... That's what I hear when I play that song over and over!!! Godspeed Mark Farner, hope to catch a show down the road! Great interview per usual John, I am a subscriber and love listening to your solid questions!

Mixing Garlic with Ginger doubles the health benefits of both. I take 5 big toes of Garlic with the same amount of Ginger, 3 large Lemons, put it all in the blender. In a glass jar in the fridge it never spoils. One tablespoon a day just before breakfast and you'll never be sick again. A pinch of Turmeric and black pepper make it even healthier! ✌
