Ann Wilson stood by the band three times, for their biggest breaks in the industry. Mushroom Records/Mike Flicker only wanted to sign Ann when they first did a demo (Nancy hadn't joined yet) and she declined. The second time, after Nancy joined and they had original songs, Mushroom/Flicker only wanted Ann and Nancy, but they insisted on the band (which Derosier wasn't a part of, by the way) and Flicker recognized it was non-negotiable because of their relationships, so the band was signed. Steve Fossen confirms this in another video of this "series." Then the Capitol Records president only wanted to sign Ann in 1984, but she convinced him to sign the whole band (which already had Mark Andes and Denny Carmassi as members since 1982). She recorded the Almost Paradise duet for Footlose which was a big deal and could very easily go on a successful solo career specially if outside songwriters were writing hits for her. That was like the perfect time to do it, like many other vocalists have done in the 80s. She didn't.

Mushroom records envisioned for Ann Wilson producing mediocre rock music right from the onset of her career. They envisioned her as a much higher octave soprano version of Karen carpenter. She would be surrounded by essentially session musicians all incapable of punching up and tweaking her songwriting the way the band she had at her disposal could. Do we really want to call it standing by the band or do we want to call it her choosing for herself not to be putting out material that would belong alongside the Carpenters Olivia Newton-John Captain and tennille Helen Reddy etc. In other words what she was forced to accept in 1985 without that original band to tweak her sheet music to something with rock credibility they were going to force upon her right from the onset of her career had she not made it wise decision. That is a decision that eventually got her to the Rock and roll Hall of Fame while listening to mushroom records would not have. That's what she had the foresight to think about. Her loyalty was based on recognizing that they have something special together. Put together in bold print. And everything that she together with Nancy have done after the departure of the original members has done nothing but hurt The credibility of heart in its deserving to be in the Rock and roll Hall of fame. My God they had to wait 14 years past the eligibility date to be inducted while had she not driven the original members out and let's say they went on until mid-80s and stopped they would have been a shoe in for first year eligibility induction. But here you are telling us that she should get credit for not wanting to become the 1985 heart right out of the gate.

that's not accurate, Michael Fisher was the manager, so watch what Derosier says right in start, Michael, Roger, Ann and Nancy sat down him, Howard and Steve telling them what they wanted, he doesn't go into detail but by this point the first album was recorded and it has a ton of studio and guests on it, so they were probably thinking that's what they would do for albums and these guys would just back them live and make min pay while the other 4 took all the money, and the three to their credit said no.

I saw them side stage, as a kid, and got to meet them around 1980. My cousin was the venue security head, and the crew, band, and me even played touch football in the back area, near the bus parking!! I was completely smitten with Nancy, and she knew it, so she dedicated her acoustic guitar solo before Crazy On You to "my adorable backstage cutie"... I was the happiest 12 year old on Earth!! Heart was awesome, live, and they were the nicest people to a young fan. I still smile everytime I hear that intro.

This is a tough topic. Of course, every band member matters. Every band member deserves acknowledgment and respect. But if you’re in a band with Ann Wilson… hey, if you’re in HEART with Ann Wilson…you’re working with a one in a million performer, and that deserves acknowledgment and respect too. A lot of folks can play the parts but no one else can do exactly what she does. In a way, you should just count your blessings that you’re a part of it all… it’s not like you’re not part of an enormous legacy or anything!

I’ve seen Heart recently. Maybe 7 years ago. It was one of the best shows I’ve seen. They were super tight and their zeppelin covers are untouchable too. As far as trash talking them is concerned, I pay very little attention to that. In the late 70’s, I recall a studio guitarist trash talking Roger Fisher’s musical abilities. I paid no attention to him because I didn’t know if it was true. I take this video at the same value. I don’t know Ann and Nancy. I know people who’ve met and worked with them and have only heard good things about them so I’m going to leave it at that.

I have enjoyed all different eras of Heart. For those who look down upon their 80s hair/keyboards phase, I think it is worth remembering that many bands had to make similar adjustments, likely due to pressures from record labels and listening trends. Some notable bands that went with this flow include the Stones, Rush, Yes, Genesis, David Bowie, etc. Some bands fared better than others at this, and one could argue that Heart did quite well, to a large extent dominating that period with a string of hits and very solid albums. Once the glitz era faded, Heart flirted with an almost metal sound and eventually settled back to their classic blend of gutsy hard and acoustic songs. Like other bands, they weathered the tides of the music market, and did it well indeed. I actually really like and admire the variety that their deep catalogue encompasses.

I graduated in '84 and as a teen I loathed the "trend" to add a buncha smarmy keyboards to embellish a more guitar based band. ACK!!! Bands that featured keys as an integral part of their sound, such as The Cars and The Fixx, were great. But when the awful sprinkling keys all over each and every album for a major act to "stay with the times" reared it's head.... Ugh. Cringe

Her voice was powerful but to all of the guys, not nearly as powerful as the incredible, blazing guitars and intricate work along with the booming drums and work on the tech efects. All Anne had to do was sing and try to avoid missing a note like she almost did midway through Crazy on you but she recovered like a pro, just like the guys!

Just subbed to ur channel ... As a huge Heart fan (mostly the Roger Fisher era, but never stopped loving them. I am 63 & just got an Ann Wilson adult coloring book! Lol! Yep, I never knew those existed til recently!) I went to many of their concerts - hooked up with their stage mgr & he got me backstage every time. I met all the band & Ann & Nancy (I mainly wanted to meet Ann coz she was/is my idol!) They were all super nice to me except Howard, who seemed kind of arrogant. When Roger left I followed his new band The Roger Fisher Band & became pen pals with his fan club president. I sent her some of my poetry. Well, unbeknownst to me she let Rog read it & he actually hand-wrote me a very sweet letter telling me that I had talent & that I should pursue that & keep at it. I still keep in touch with him occasionally. Anyway, I loved the video! Thanks for the interviews!!

Talent is probably the least important element in the equation. The point is that in any band, the members all need to understand and agree to the leadership dynamic and the lines of communication between members need to be maintained. You don't have to be bestest buddies, but what you do need is a commitment to the band's way of working, however that is determined.

It seems like, with these iconic rock bands with one of the fantastic singers up front, the drummer and the lead singer, far more often than not, just don't get along well. The singer is the one with the voice and the words. The drummer (unless he or she is a Don Henley type) doesn't. So, the drummer has issues. Aerosmith, Pearl Jam, etc etc. Trouble happened as well with Robin Zander and Bun E. as well...and Bun E. was out (although still maintained in some way, with some payment and status as a former member). I don't have any doubts Zander is a truly good guy. This situation? It's hard for me to not see it from Ann Wilson's POV really.

Seve Fossen actually went into great detail about the whole Ann Wilson situation in an interview with Jeb Wright on "Classic Rock Revisited" back in 2013 when they were inducted into the HOF. She basically wanted the girls to have all the control and the group to be the Wilson sisters and backing band.

It’s all ego for most lead singers. This is what brings a band’s downfall. When you have a ego that is ‘skies the limit’, you can’t play well with others. Why the band Queen lasted for so long, as they accepted every band member as an equal, to the point where Freddie would emphatically say to the media that he’s the lead SINGER, not the leader of the band. They didn’t just respect and accept each other personally, but artistically and professionally as well(Hot Space album disaster for example). When they all failed doing their solo stuff, they realized that they were far better off as a cohesive unit.

??? Ann was ...is a Diva, main song writer, and her talent was was front and center. They also persevered beyond the original band to create more hits. She was the "frontman" of Heart. Hate to say it, but it was her show. ....And, her show is still going. One could argue that the "rock band culture" had a male bias. As far as financial stuff goes, sounds like it was fair. But, these guys were following Ann's lead because it was financially beneficial. Ann's talent carries her with any good band.

Unfortunately this is what happens to a band when you have enormous talent. Ann and Nancy were the face of Heart on most of album covers thats what sold and when Ann sang her voice became the star. This band would not have been successful with out her voice. Get over it be happy you were apart of it instead of tearing down the opportunity you had. Jealous dudes, you should be grateful you were part of it.

The original lineup for Heart was the best. Their undoing came as a result of them dating each other. When the relationships broke up, members started leaving the band. Like I said before, if Ann were more secure with herself, she would have let the band in her heart. I have to say, they were tight professionally. They sounded better live. Ann is one of the best rock singers out there, male or female. I love watching their 70's stuff. Ann was really sexy back then.

In his book, Lou Gramm discussed when Foreigner toured with Heart in 1979. He said the guys were really nice, but Ann and Nancy were standoff-ish. However, he also said that might have been because Double Vision was selling so well that some venues flipped the bill, making Foreigner the headliner instead of the opening act.

Heart came to kamloops bc, canada years ago. Definately no l.a. Or toronto and yet they played like they were playing for the pope and they gave us multiple encors. They put on a show that left me /us feeling in total awe of professionals. They survived decade after decade to do what they do. After many bands or singers packed it in. Very blessed to have seen them Live and made the concert an event that even today when i see heart i have to stop drop roll and remember thinking how many men or male bands can even hold a candle to them? When they pulled off stairway to heavan - i got teary and find it so emotional to watch the pros deliver art music and professionalism in the music industry.

I’ve loved all phases of Heart. Ann could have went solo many times but didn’t. Heart is Ann and Nancy for me. Purists always have problem with change no matter what the genre. If bands never went through changes we would have missed out on some of the greatest albums. 🤷‍♀️

I can't say I am a purist as I am retro-discovering their old stuff just now. The band wasn't that big here in Europe, so mainly their commercial 80s stuff is known to broad audiences. All that being said, I was wondering why those first records are so terrific, but then a decline in song quality from my pov. I am finding out now about those lineup changes and struggles. I have to say that first albums contain superb songs that blew me away (how did I miss that before??). Classic lineup made awesome albums.

Ann did a few solo songs and a duet with Mike Reno for movie soundtracks. She also released a solo album. Nancy released a couple of solo albums. The first one was live. ‘All For Love’ was a solo song she did for the ‘Say Anything’ movie soundtrack. Nancy does a music video for the song too.

Ann Wilson was certainly one of the best female singers of that era and arguably one of the best of all time. She had a Patsy Cline type of signature voice that cannot be duplicated. No one can copy the Ann Wilson sound. You can understand how the ego could take over with that kind of talent.

Michael used to come to our gigs when we played in North Seattle. My snare head was worn out one night so I swapped it out and asked him to sign it. He did and I still have it and it has a permanent spot on my glory wall. We talked a lot about Heart and everything he said here is exactly what he said back then. Michael, if you're reading this, I'm sure you don't remember me but maybe Chrissy and playing at the club Christie's in Fife for her album. I was the drummer. I played in bar bands for many years myself, with all kinds of people and attitudes. People who are really good can often have “attitude” or different personalities from us regular working players. It’s just part of the dynamic for them and it feeds their performance (thought I was gonna say ego didn’t ya 🙂) its just one of the places their power comes from, it’s their fuel and I never had an issue dealing with it IF they truly had the skills. I don’t care too much for drama so that stuff never bothered me much. I appreciate when your preforming on that level and making pro money thing are different than bar band stuff but as a fan of Heart I think the girls have the chops. I saw them a few years ago in PC Beach Fl. and enjoyed it a lot, even the Pat Travers stuff and the Aretha Franklin cover, which was unexpected. I will say those early years were the best, amazing jams that deserve to be classics and the guys in this video were major contributors to that. I saw em in the late 70’s in Dayton Oh. and it was a rowdy, rockin show! 👍

I just turned 73 and I was a long haired musician myself back in the day, I saw "Spirit" in concert at least 3 times including the "Texas International Pop Festival" on Labor Day weekend 1969. Starting in 1968 and I can say without a doubt, they were one of the best live rock and roll bands I ever witnessed and I've seen everybody from Jimi Hendrix - 3 times to Led Zeppelin - 5 times and everybody in-between. Anyways, I always thought that Spirit was more than good enough to be a super group but for some reason it just didn't happen. True Story, back in late 68 or early 69, Spirit played in Fort Worth, Texas in Concert and later that night they actually showed up and played a few songs at a local night club called the "Circus Club", it was a local teenage rock and roll club. That's when I met Mark and the others in the Band and all I can add is that it's was a really great night and a best memory that I will never forget. I remember it like it was yesterday.

Seems it was hardest on Roger Fisher and his career. Thats no reflection on the tremendous talent elsewhere in the band only that Master Guitarists often can branch out much easier than Bass players or Drummers and the like. Still to this day I haven't heard any axman ever even get near the musical corner Roger worked. He was tremendous. I can go down to the local guitar bar and hear talent ooze. But Rogers input to that band was clearly in a class by itself...

I worked for a booking agency in Seattle back in the day. One of the better groups we had was named "Whiteheart", a solid rock'n'roll band. They moved to Vancouver and latter added Nancy and then Ann. The sisters were added to the band, they did not start it and hire the players.

Here we have 2 sisters with amazing talent, Ann singing lead 98% of the time, both sisters Alpha females for sure with Ann being more so than her sister. "Alpha Females" - get real! Watch the short video of Ann crying in the studio in the mid-80s because she either got dumped by some quickie guy or some other drama happened. She's a basket case in that video. The sisters had their best success when they were directed (aka LED) by strong males like the Fishers in the 70s and Capitol executives in the 1980s. Since then, they haven't done much.

They had the Speedway Jam in Toledo, Ohio after they released "Little Queen". I heard "love alive" during that tour and kind of let it slip way back into my memories. As someone who also has spent many years in a successful rock band, with both make and female members…it is a tougher “go” than a band with all one gender. Ultimately, romances happen and end, which effect things, even more than the normal personality conflicts. Heart has survived despite this…largely as a “band”…or at least the early version and then the 80s version, during it primary “hits” years. It takes a special male personality to be able to work with women players long-term.

All of these artists end up being surrounded by song writers, producers, engineers, and other musicians that fill the role the band did and collectively probably take a bigger cut at the end of the day. I would argue most solo artists were better with their bands. Sting and Phil Collins were both better and more iconic in their bands, possibly outside of one song In The Air Tonight, but you would put Sudio up against Misunderstanding or Land of Confusion? Fields of Gold put up against Every Breath You Take or Roxanne? It is an interesting conversation, but no way was Anne Wilson better on her ow, as someone who has listened to her solo efforts. She needed these guys creativity.

I saw the band when they were called White Hart at inglemore high school in Kenmore wash in the early1970 they played alot of covers I partyed at one of their houses in Kirkland that had a slide from the upstairs bedroom deck to the pool that was in the late 70s then in the late 90s I lived in Woodinville next to the Wilson's horse Ranch I couldn't believe how the sisters treated the guys after they parted ways Mike Drosher is a friend and fellow drummer buddie ,Roger Fisher had a ego problem back in the day he didn't like the playing under the sisters he wanted to be the star so the guys try ten bulls that flopped it's a hard life in that business I've been playing for 55 years n haven't made squat for money playing music I sell instraments and repair them but still play n sing in a band

Mike Derosier's analysis of Ann is right on. I always felt like it was Ann Wilson first, then Nancy and then the rest of them, not a complete band. It came through that way in the music and album art work and live in concert. It wasn't hard to see even as a teenager growing up in the late 70s

Amen. Only the 'original' band and in my opinion albums, hold water. I continue to like their first album which is great. I grew up in Kirkland, one city down from Bellevue, where the Wilson's grew up. I remember seeing Fischer's post-Heart band, Ten Bulls, before a crowd of five at the Sittin' Bull Pub at "Totem Lake Shopping Center," in the 80's, etc. In other words, the truth about the band was easily available to those from the area. And the truth is that much of the B.S. that Anne said in the 70's, she says today, as does Nancy. Today, Ann talks of the terrible treatment she received decades ago. Back then - seldom a whisper or hint of a complaint. With hindsight, oh yeah - she's got an endless list of complaints. Many of the things that she complains about are things without which, she would never have succeeded. That dynamic messes with her. I enjoyed the Wilson's audiobook biography and yeah, poor Ann went through a lot as a kid. As do we all. There are also a lot of lies in the book. She claims she was an introverted teenager. Trouble is, she told the Seattle Times back in the seventies, the guys she hung out with as a teen were a "punks, almost thugs, but they were the only ones that were really alive." There's a weird pattern from Ann in particular of literally being angry with the past. So, she re-invents the past. (Most hilarious of all is when the sisters routinely claimed they were Canadians.) The simple truth is that Heart ran out of great songs pretty quickly. We're talking a band that honed their craft in weird Bellevue churches and keggars. It took them literally years to get good enough to make the first LP. I think Magazine would have been a second great album but yeah, Mushroom Record's greed, shattered the band forever. Without great songs, they've sort of been a greatest hits band ever since with reference to their early success in the 70's. The 80's was largely the work of outside writers.

Imho Heart stopped being Heart and started being a corporate hit 💔 machine after the former members ceased as members of Heart. Roger Fischer, Michael Derossier and Steve Fossen were what made the original sound that attracted me to Heart. They had 3 distinct phases to my way of thinking. The original Heart then the Corporate phase where it was just about making hits and ceased being a cohesive band. Then it was Anne and Nancy Wilson and a few side men.

As a band, everything Heart did had been done before except..... the Wilson Sisters. Anne's throat and Nancy's chops made them unique. There are countless talented dudes from that era to plug into the band and seems like Heart would be just fine. Take away the sisters and Heart would be erased from rock history. All you have to see is Fisher picking up a violin bow and literally copying Jimmy Page on stage to see this point. Having said this, I truly love the original Heart line up and early albums. I'm glad they found a way to work together and get it done.

People commenting on these statements from former members of Heart don't understand Ann or Ann and Nancy did not make a lot of their own decisions. Outside songwriters were foisted on Heart because times were changing musically, but more importantly, the record label, managers, lawyers, etc used these tactics to control bands. The same things happened to Aerosmith and other bands that survived the 70s. In the 80s, Ann and Nancy's songwriting was heading more towards the "Dreamboat Annie"/"Dog And Butterfly" direction when Capitol Records wanted big anthem rockers. The change in the band's look and style was big 80s all the way!! As for the Fisher brothers, according to rumors at the time, Roger and Nancy relationship became physically violent. Ann ended her relationship with Mike Fisher shortly after perhaps because of the fallout from Roger and Nancy. Everyone has a story, and as a huge fan of this band, I've read and heard them all. The classic lineup of Heart in the 70s was the best. The 80s group seemed like Ann, Nancy and Howard plus some hired guns.

I’ve been in 4 bands, always the only female, yet I was the singer, rhythm guitarist and predominant song writer, producer and marketer. I paid for everything to get some respect. There was always one ego driven male who had to f€§£ things up with power and control. No guy wants to be the Indian, they all want to be the chief. In regard to Heart, Ann commands the stage. No one, NO ONE rivals her voice and talent. When I think of Heart, I think of Ann and Nancy. When I think of Roger I think of immaturity, selfishness, a cheater and big baby having a temper tantrum on stage with a serious cocaine problem. The rest of the band have room to speak as they are incredible musicians but they didn’t make Heart famous, sorry gentlemen, Ann is the queen bee and without her do you honestly think you would have risen to the same level of notoriety?

Yep. Roger showed with the rest of his career he was just an easily replaceable cog who thought he should be in charge. There is always that person in a group who thinks they should be in charge, but the truth is they are just delusional.

I saw Heart after "Dreamboat Annie" at a Night Club in Baltimore right after we had heard Magic Man on the radio. I was standing about 6 feet away from Nancy, and she stuck her tongue out at me. I think she was a tad uncomfortable with how so close we were to her, and how close people were standing there next to the band (it was a place where local good bands had played there for dancing). They were very good and we were so amazed at the band after buying the album. I saw them again a short time later in Baltimore. They were at their big time had begun. Then we went to see them in the 80's after "Bad Animals" tour and I thought it was great seeing them again, but hated the album. Really disliked how they had been directed into with the huge hair and funky clothes.

The Rock Hall induction showed how much better Heart sounded with the original lineup. Not taking anything away from Ann's amazing vocals but their new band doesn't sound as good and you can tell by both their live performances at the induction with the old band and then current band. It was great seeing them play again and I give much props to Ann and Nancy for playing again with the old band but it did make me sad that they can't cut a new album together with each other anymore.

I snuck back stage and met the Roger and Nancy in 1976 in Boutwell Auditium in Birmingham AL. The next year I chauffeured the band when they played at BJCC. That was a treat. All of them were very nice to me.

Male front men are admired for their talent and their egos (confidence). Funny how a female front woman ("girl") becomes an issue. The band needed Ann more than she needed them.
