The city they are walking in is Chester. Originally a Roman fort and settlement. You can tell that by the clock has only 3 sides. There is no clock face on the Welsh side. The Welsh border is not very far away. Thus supposedly where you get the saying to not give you the time of day.

The golden rule of going shopping to an M&S food hall is; don't go in when you are hungry! You won't be able to carry all the stuff that takes your fancy! Eat your pork pie at room temperature with some good pickles; I like a chunky picalilli (it's a traditional vegetable and mustard pickle).

Marks & Spencer is a relatively high end Department Store (although they only sell own-brand clothes) that started as “Marks’ Penny Bazaar”, a market stall in Leeds in the 19th Century. At one time (1980’s and ‘90’s) it was famous as being the shop where most of us Brits bought our underwear 😁

Never heat up a pork pie!!! Eat chilled with brown sauce (HP) or Branston Pickle/Piccalilli. However, if you're lucky enough to find a butcher/baker who makes pork pies on site and you get there early, you can get a freshly baked pie where the filling is still warm with the jelly still melting.....epic in every way!!

I showed it to my mum, she couldn't believe it, but let me spend it. That was a good day, I spent it in store on toys 😂 I'll never forget that. I'm 56 now lol.

Yes pork pies are eaten cold. This always seems to be a surprise to Americans. Pork pies are a hunting pie. Developed in the 17thC they are designed to be packed in your saddle bag and still be in one piece when you have lunch. The crust is hard but delicious. The pork filling is lightly spiced.

The ready-meals are very useful for elderly folk, particularly widows who don't want to go to the trouble of cooking all the ingredients just for themselves. Certainly, both my mother and mother-in-law ( both in their late 80's ) enjoy them, as they can enjoy a quality meal with a minimum of fuss. It can be hard for them to cook, with all their memories of cooking for husbands, and children etc flooding back. M&S food is usually of the highest quality ... and are usually higher priced than a normal supermarket !!

Just to say in case you were puzzled by the Sainsbury's bag.... In the UK shops are no longer allowed to supply free plastic bags, and the only bags now readily available are more expensive re-usable bags. Hence, shoppers invariably take a supply of plastic or re-usable bags with them to the supermarket - hence the Sainsbury's bag from the couple's last shop! You'll be interested to know that cashiers sit down at the checkout tills, and you are expected to pack your own bags. Many supermarkets now have self check out - you scan the items yourself at a special till then pay for the items. Many also have systems where you take your trolley and bags with you round the shop, scan the items on a hand held scanner or your own phone, and put them directly into your own bags. You then pay on exit. Random checks are done to make sure everything has been scanned.

Have to add to these "young pups" that food servings in the UK as the rest of Europe are smaller than the gargantuan American servings, plus the food is of far greater quality. M&S food in particular. So we dont need huge servings to satisfy our stomachs. The other thing here is that we a very cosmopolitan, so you will see foods here for Indian, Chinese,German,French,Italian etc. Streaky Bacon (American Bacon) is pig belly, British Bacon is called Back Bacon because it comes from the back of the pig. Much more meat.Percy Pig was aimed at children, but hey, if you like them good luck. Oh as to Marmite, its quite a strong savoury paste, so when you first try it, a little is best. As the ads say, you either love it or hate it! It might taste strange, remember we dont add tons of sugar and Marmite has none.

Marks and Spencers is an established British institution. You can have very large stores that have clothing, homewares, furniture and possibly a food hall. You can also have smaller ones that just do clothing or food. Depends on the location. I occasionally drop into an M and S Food for slightly nicer stuff or better wines if I feel like a change or for special occasions. This one looks like it was in Chester. Duck and goose fat make the best crispy roast potatoes.⁸

The buildings by the Marks and Spencer definitely make me think that Chester is the city. It's another place well worth visiting and demonstrates how very old buildings can still be incorporated in a town centre. It was founded in the 1st century AD as a Roman fort, in fact the name stems from the Roman terms for fort and is the origin of place names like Manchester, Silchester, Bicester, Leicester and many others.

Hello Mark. We used to have a Woolworths (Woolies) in every town. It used to be a marker, an ex-girlfriend of mine was doing Geology/Geography and we went touring Somerset. One of their “tools” for gauging the size of a community was if it had a Woolworths. The larger stores had a cafeteria and offered cheap and good meals. Our store on Queen Street in Cardiff had a basement with mainly household goods and ironmongery, great range of cheap tools, screws, nails, hinges etc. The ground floor was general merchandise, the upper floor had the cafeteria. Unfortunately Woolworths shut down in the UK in the 80’s. In Cardiff there are 4 M&S stores, it’s main one is on Queen Street, the capital’s main shopping street, a smaller store in a western suburb, a food only store in a northern suburb and a really big out of town store to the west. The out of town store has a café, bistro, a waitress service restaurant and two floors of main shopping goods, a bank and finance section offering full banking and foreign exchange. I live in South Wales about 12 miles from Cardiff in a community of 5 villages getting closer to each other. We have a M&S, a smallish one but sells a range of all the goods the larger ones have, but we have a small food hall. Very handy, I share a back garden fence with the shop and a few of their shop neighbours. It’s not the cheapest food shop but their quality is top notch. A small instore bakery, baking partially baked loaves finishing them off. Great range of sandwiches, snacks, cakes and sodas for a lunch on the go. Free-range spaghetti About 50 years ago the BBC’s most famous programme voice, David Dimbleby, made a programme about an Italian spaghetti harvest. Italian farmers from spaghetti trees. At the time spaghetti in the UK was something you had on a summer holiday if you were wealthy enough to travel there. This programme was broadcast on April 1st, not many took notice of the date! You were brought up that the BBC was trusted.

Go into a M&S with a shopping plan. I'm telling you mate it would go out the door in 5 mins or less. M&S is the place to go when you think bugger it, i'm going to treat myself. i get vouchers occasionally at work if job well done or get nominated and normally say £25. I will always convert them to M&S vouchers so I can indulge. The Christmas special stuff is off the scale indulgent. One year my husband and I were supposed to go to my parents for Christmas so didnt really bother getting a load of food. We both went down with mega colds and didnt want to ruin other peoples christmas by spreading it so stayed home. Despite feeling crap we needed to eat so on Christmas Eva i did a trolly dash round M&S. A lot was discounted due last day of sale. I have never eaten so well for a whole week except on a cruise.

I have a big M&S store close to me. They have the most amazing dine special offers. The quality is very high indeed. For £15 one can get a mains, side, dessert and a bottle of wine. That lasted me about four days as I live alone. I adore M&S food. I love their Japanese, Korean, Indian and Chinese food. the pork pie should be eaten cold, perhaps other meats, such as slices of ham and turkey, pickles too also a selection of cheeses with crusty bread and butter and a glass of Port or red wine. Ideal for picnics. Paella is a Spanish dish soooo good. Food inflation is very high at the moment here in the UK. The best food is in the farmers markets, most towns have one. I think because we are very linked to Europe that our cuisine reflects that. Paella, Gruyere cheese. In fact we have hundreds of British cheeses plus European. My son was in America and went to a restaurant, not high end but asked for non-processed cheese. Like a blue or matured cheese. He said mum, I could have had two heads. Not being disrespectful to America. Once again Europe is a feast, plus we are so multicultural in a small island that all foods and nationalities are represented in the UK. I had the same experience when I visited New York.

A lot of the ready meals only have the ingredients you would put in them if you were making them yourself. I cook from scratch most of the time but will have a ready meal from M&S or Waitrose. Both more expensive than other supermarkets but very good quality. As I'm now an older singleton I dont eat as much so its important what I do eat is best quality I can afford.

Mark. Yes Marks & Spencer's is not a place you would go for your regular shop, as it's considerably higher in price than say a supermarket like Sainsbury's. The ready meals seen here look about £6 each, whereas at Sainsbury's it would be around £3 (though they do have a higher priced range too). This pair didn't get into the real Christmas goodies yet, except for the Percy Pig stuff. There has certainly been rapid inflation here in the UK over the last couple of years, with many food items rising by 20p, 50p at a time. For instance the dry dog meal I buy for my puppies has risen from around £3 for 2.5 kg to £8.30 over 2 years. This is maybe a special case, as many cereals have likewise risen. Yorkshire pudding needs a good beef stock gravy. Percy pig sweets are made for small children's tastes, not adults. Yes, one needs a plan or you could spend a fortune. M & S stores vary in different towns, some being full stores like this one, but others are just smaller food shops, others clothes only. One would need to keep a Kara on a tight leash, or go broke, he he. I've been there. Ladies like to shop.

I have tried a few vegetarian meat substitutes when my local supermarket has heavily marked down the prices. I find them very "hit and miss". Some are OK, and others are like eating rubber.

one thing which struck me was the young lady baulked at the price of a main meal.. yet filled the basket with sweets and was planning on finding a Colin the Catepillar cake.. hmm.. odd. or as they keep saying WEIRD. i do wish people from the USA would stop saying WEIRD or CRAZY for unusal/out of the ordinary. lol.

I'm not sure if these two live in the UK, they seem to be in Britain quite a lot. Marks and Sparks is more of the high end of shopping.

No, they live in the USA, but do a lot of European travel vlogs.

Not sure how true it is these days but "Mark's" (as it's known) has a reputation for comfortable, good quality underwear.

I must say, I don’t agree any more that M and S is always more pricey. These days I’ve seen items in Asda that are dearer than M n S

I think you would have known if the Cadburys you bought in Spain was British, because USA have a different recipe to us in England, The British version is a lot better, as Hershey’s makes cadburys over usa, ( enough said about the horrible Hershsys)
