Alonzo Highsmith attended Christopher Columbus High School in Miami, FL and graduated from the University of Miami. He was the 3rd pick in the first round of the 1987 NFL Draft. He finished his boxing career with a record of 27-1-2 (23 via knockout).

I called one of Alonzo's fights a few years after this one. Though his opponent was way overmatched, Mr Bolden trained him to use a very stiff power jab knocking his opponent out with that punch. He was a very good showman, charismatic and athletic, sadly he never made it past 10 round mid cards. When I asked commentary partner Billy Moore his opinion, his response was, "he's what, 35 and 0? He'll need another 35 fights before he learns what he's doing"!

However, I now despise him, knowing what he was involved in, against "Doc" Anderson!!! 😠 I was in the same dorm with "Doc", for quite a few months, and got to know him well. He told me all about the incident with Gastineau and the agent/promoter! The agent had his water spiked, between rounds, and about killed "Doc"!! Unfortunately, that was the cause of him being in the Dept of Corrections, and he was only at the same camp with me for a short time, for whatever reason, then was transferred back down south, closer to his family. He was appealing his case, but unfortunately, the last time I looked him up, he was still there!! 😢😓😡 Totally wrong!!! He is a really good humble person!! 👍💪🙂✌️

I also had the privilege of watching Alonzo Highsmith, play in the State Championship game, in High School, against one of the local teams, near me. He was a All-American Defensive End, and was in on ever other tackle, it seemed like. 😅 Don Shula's son, Mike, was the quarterback, and Nick Buonaconti's son, Marc was a linebacker playing alongside Highsmith!! 😳 They ended up losing to the local team, that I went in support of, though. 😊 It was a great game, all the way to the end, and I am so glad that my Dad talked me into going!! 🙂 Rest in Peace, Dad! 😢

Why in the world would you turn your back on your opponent? To hope that they have mercy on you? I wonder what was going on in Mark's mind there? He had a habit of doing that against his opponents the moment they landed a punch or two. I can see backing away and defending yourself, but to take your eye off your opponent! That's kinda like hiding under the covers when the boogeyman is approaching your bed.

In fairness to Gastineau, he had no idea his opponents were being paid to take dives. Hence 15 wins and coming out looking like this. He was being exploited by his agent who was looking to build him up to look like a credible threat, then cash in when he finally fought a big name opponent. He could have gotten seriously hurt if that happened. If you've ever seen the Simpsons episode where Homer becomes a boxer, you pretty much know the gist of what was happening.

Except for one little problem, Two Ton while being of generous girth, the dirtiest fighter ever and having a colorful personality was a trained fighter who floored Joe Louis twice before getting bombed out in 4. Gastineau was hilariously averse to getting hit, that tells me no fucking way this guy wanted to be a boxer. It would be like back when he was a football player had he been contact-averse.

Tim "Doc" Anderson was the boxer that killed promotor Rick Parker in self defense. The first fight against Gastineau, Doc was supposed to take a dive, but Gastineau was not making a valid effort in the fight, so Doc fought for real and won. Parker was pissed. He set up a rematch and Parker had Doc's cornermen to poison his water. Gastineau won because Doc got very sick. When Parker threatened that he woukd kill Doc and his family, Doc killed Parker with a .38 at the Embassy Suites Resort in Lake Buena Vista. Doc turned himself in immediately and is serving life in prison, which is very unfair and sad. Read the story about Doc because he deserves justice.
