What's up with WB asking him to quit quoting Joker lines? That seems really counter-productive. The man is basically introducing and selling Batman: The Animated Series to a new generation as well as reminding old fans to give it another look. I can only see this as positive, really. Or is it that they wanna fade him out so that new actors taking over The Joker don't have to be compared to him? Hm.

Andreas Nordvall WB and other companies are too afraid they're going to lose money. Selling your work to a company has a positive and a negative. The positive is that they make your work known. The negative is that if you ever cease your job with them, your work is still owned by them.

Yeah, the lawyers are really giddy to threaten lawsuits at the drop of a hat. I remember when Adam West went on the Howard Stern Show, back in 1994, with the Batman mask from the 60s TV show. He allowed Howard Stern to try it on, but Adam West, whose whole career is that Batman show, could not wear it because the WB lawyers told him they would sue him for copyright infringement if he did. I can understand filing a lawsuit IF the performer was trying to make a living off a character he is no longer entitled to play, but threatening Hamill for uttering a few phrases and an occasional laugh? Just stupid.

I don't like it either, but I can understand the lawyerly mindset. According to the law, if a company doesn't defend against every single infringement it knows about (and unauthorized public performance counts as an infringement), then that non-defense can be used as evidence of copyright/trademark abandonment in a later case. It probably wasn't Warners going "how dare he?!?" so much as "oh crap... we gotta send the letter or else some cocky lawyer down the line will find a way for this to snowball into us losing the rights to The Joker..."

Why I love Mark Hamill's Joker is something that is multilayered. The articulation of organised chaos, simply as Joker is this unapologetic protagonist who wants to drive Batman insane and to his breaking point, but who never wants him dead, because it would end this macabre dance/extremely unhinged romance in Joker's mind. His laugh is the Joker personified in a sound - evil, maniacal, and seeing death and chaos as the punchline, but above it all, it is Mark Hamill showing with such enthusiasm, that he is as much a fan of the characters involved as he is an extremely talented and humble actor. When they have redone animations of Joker, because Mark did something in the recording booth that they want articulated, nobody can match what he brings to the role. Deep inside, Mark remains a child at heart, and that child reading a Batman comic book comes through every time you hear Joker speak and laugh. As a true DC fan, I am eternally grateful for all he brings, as he surpassed all of our expectations, and gave it even more life and brightness.

***** Troy Baker was in Arkham Origins. And interestingly, imitating Hamill quite well, exept his signature laughter. I think that Troy Baker was voicing a 20y younger version of Hamills Joker from Arkham universe and if he was voicing his own Joker without any baggage, he would take a different approach instead of just imitating Hamill.
@JakubMateiART9 жыл бұрын
dntm123 He acctualy retired, its (literally) a cameo by Joker in Arkham Knight. I read that this approach was interesting for him, he liked the script and felt that finishing Arkham trilogy like that would be much nicer . Also Kevin Conroy talked him to it. But Hamill stopped doing voice for Joker as a whole (no movies or tv shows). But you are right, because he did Arkham City after that, but I guess that he was not informed about its existence during that time he did this panel. Also Joker sells Batman games so they had to force him in somehow :D

I would like to mention. That his joker voice has changed over the years. It was I bit more high piched and clean in the first few seasons of the animated series. Then it got a little more raspy after the redesign. By the movie return of the joker in the flashback. Wich in my opinion is the best looking version of the animated series Joker, is the best sounding. Now it all sounds like the Arkham video games joker. I of course understand that Mark Hamill is not as young as he was when he did the voice in the animated series. But the Joker now. Is not the same sounding Joker that he was in the animated series. And even in batman beyond return of the joker. But Mark is still king when it comes to the Joker.
@jt43695 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. I prefer his Joker voice in the early seasons of BTAS and Phantasm. He had some of the best variation in his laugh during those seasons too. Ref. The Laughing Fish, Christmas With the Joker. I think there were a few in The New Adventures of Batman an Robin too.

It's so silly to me in retrospect to think that there was even a chance that Hamill's Joker would be rejected in favor of Nicholson's. For me, there's no contest. I really like Nicholson's's Joker but Hamill's is much better. For me it's 1. Mark Hamill 2. Heath Ledger 3. Jack Nicholson (Though I still consider it a tie for 3rd between Nicholson and Troy Baker).
@declanmorden8 жыл бұрын
The order of how good each persons portrayal of the joker is the exact same for me
@RaderizDorret8 жыл бұрын
I'd rate Jared Leto's performance as fairly solid and a bit more multidimensional than Heath Ledger's Joker. When I first saw The Dark Knight, I was impressed by how good a job he did, but on subsequent viewings, I realized that the Heath Ledger Joker is just pure psychopath with no punchline at all. None of the sudden shifts from being your best friend to hurling you into a vat of acid. In the comics and animated series, The Joker was psychotic, but he could also charm someone instead of intimidating them and THAT is what made him so terrifying: you never really knew what he would do. Heath's take, while interesting at first, is nothing more than Tony Montana with bad clown makeup but with even less charm than Montana had. People hate me for this, but over time I am less and less impressed with Heath's one dimensional Joker compared to Mark Hamill, Jack Nicholson, or Cesar Romero. Hell, Leto actually showed more dimensions than Ledger did in the nightclub scene. He started off as business-like and approachable before going full psycho while Ledger was stuck in psycho mode the whole time.
@FelisDestructicus8 жыл бұрын
@RaderizDorret - I agree. Leto's Joker felt more in line with what Mark Hamill says about the character. He felt unpredictable. You got a pretty good idea that someone was going to get hurt, or die, with Ledger's Joker. With Leto, it seemed more ambiguous.
@RaderizDorret8 жыл бұрын
***** I also kind of like the big-bling-street-thug image of The Joker. He's always been the guy who started off as a nobody but later on developed into THE powerhouse of the criminal world short of those like Lex Luthor (who is a pretty one-dimensional bad guy who still remains interesting because you never really know what his angle is though you know there always is an angle he's working). Leto took heat for the writers wanting to make him more like a street hood who rose to prominence than a classical 30s era Made Man and I think that was actually a smart move. The Mafia is still one of the powerhouses in the criminal world, but they no longer are the biggest game in town to most people (just saying what I've observed, having grown up around Detroit which historically had a very strong Mafia presence but it's faded to the street gangs in prominence in most peoples' minds). It's actually another layer to the unpredictability woven into his character. With the Mafia, they're largely focused on business and psychos are rooted out by the established Families sooner or later (usually by ambushing the bastard before he catches on), but with Street Gangs, you.really don't know what you'll get. On one hand, they are much more likely to be overtly violent but on the other they can also be more focused on business than the image of "keeping it real" (at least among the leadership. Both sides are VERY dangerous and are not to be approached lightly and without understanding (truly understanding) the consequences thereof, but the image of. Leto's Joker is an interesting and more modernized take on the Joker and how he got where he was. Instead of being an associate of Made Men who managed to beat them all, he's a two-bit flamboyant street thug who made it and no one fucks with him lightly. It's a very similar story, but exchange Mafia for street gang. It has this Saint's Row vibe to it that is fun to go with.
@FelisDestructicus8 жыл бұрын
RaderizDorret Again, I have a similar view of the character. I will say that street gangs have become far more organized than they were in the past, but I think the Joker's role in the Gotham underworld would be a little different than he would in a real life setting. Gotham's underworld is terrorized by Batman, and the Joker is the guy who not only openly challenges him, but always has great fun doing so. That alone gives him street cred like you couldn't get anywhere else. More than a street thug, I'd think of him more like a criminal celebrity, sort of a Marilyn Manson of crime. lol

If Hamill never made another reference to DC, Batman or The Joker directly, could they legally stop him from making the voice? Do they literally have a copyright on the voice itself? Or is Hamill just not legally allowed to 'portray' The Joker, even unofficially? If he voiced a character on let's say, Family Guy, named Chuck who was in no way similar to the Joker, could Hamill as an artist still use the voice and not get sued? That would be weird. Almost like NBC telling John Krasinski he couldn't ever look directly at a camera again, otherwise it's a "Jim face" and infringes on their copyrights, or like Disney suing Gilbert Gottfriend because he 'isn't Iago anymore'.

I had trouble believing Mark was Joker in batman arkum asylum.he made the joker the best part ever done.Harley was just as good.he made me love Joker.

Horrible audio, you can barely hear Mark, but all the ambient noise and children crying are louder than he is. And what is the damn crunching noise throughout?

I'm loving the Trump tweets in the Joker's voice :) God Bless Mark Hamill.

Wow WB is so mean it's not like they played the animation of the original scene.
@farquadshmoogle91202 жыл бұрын
for a full generation, Mark Hamill will always be the Joker. Jack Nicholson had the face, but Hamill had the voice. although, if he actually was allowed to play the Joker, i think that would have been the most watched movie ever, bc everyone would that loves his voice as Joker would finally get to see him act it out. dont get me wrong, Ledger did a good job, but we all know Hamill would have killed it, and box office numbers would have shown it. would be like the opposite of Puss in Boots, they were thinking, who best to voice a cat that is like Zoro, than Zoro himself? so they asked Banderas to voice it.

Send a cease and desist mark hamill is the joker!

Funny, he doesn't mentions the character "The Trickster," from the 1990 TV show, "The Flash." I hear minimal difference, vocally, between the two.

Wow. WB sending a cease and desist letter to the guy who redefined the joker and made him what he is until this day. That's low.

I'd assume the whole "WB not wanting him to quote Joker things" has to do with Lucasfilm being owned by Disney, which is one of their biggest competitors. Conflict of interest
@WorldWearyAngel9 жыл бұрын
+OddJobKid99 why? Alot of the actors voice or othewise work for multiple companies. Marvell and Dc heroes have had the same voice actor. Besides which Mark Hamill can arguably be known more for the joker now then Luke Skywalker. Wouldnt it be better to see Luke Skywalker in the disney movie and think of the Joker Laugh and want to suddenly watch batman XD

So Kevin really talked him into doing arkham knight?
@Ovegrow1209 жыл бұрын
quite obvious why they dont want him doing the joker live^^ hes just too good and loves it too much, thats why "the people" will always love him best. and troy baker is right out copying him^^
@JakubMateiART9 жыл бұрын
Ovegrow120 I think that Troy Baker is just forced to do a Hamill imitation, he would do it his own way if WB did not need a Hamill replacement. New actor should have a new Joker, but that did not happen.
@WorldWearyAngel9 жыл бұрын
+Jakub Matei Because once u had the best you expect the best. XD The Dc fans would have had a fit if the Joker stopped sounding like the Joker XD
@Ovegrow1209 жыл бұрын
Jakub Matei well thats probably true- still i just dont like it. sure we can speculate, but the fact remains they more or less fired hamil and nobody is forcing an artist to do anything- especially if they are getting payed to do it. i just dont like it, replacing someone like that- its wrong. were not talking about a product here but about artists and their work. and sure work is great but on the other hand its kind of despisable to be the one replacing someone with their own routine- while the company even goes as far as screwing the fans by sending hamil a cease an desist notice, just because he and went and did a bit for them, shame on him he actually enjoys doing it, thats not art- thats capitalism and i dont think thats something a real artist should agree to do. then again a real artist is someone working as such so never mind me.

Troy Baker was awesome as Joker.Of course he copied Mark in Origins,The joker from origins is still the same joker from the other games.It wouldn't make sense if he sounded differently.

I heard dee bradley baker laugh (when I saw ultimate Spider Man as carnage) it's sounds good but mark hamill can do it better, pretend carnage is voiced by mark hamill and think about it. OH... And another question which insane laugh is better Dee Bradley baker or mark hamill?

What's next to his ear?
@antsmania8 жыл бұрын
It's a microphone on a headpiece which helps to amplify his voice through speakers around the room. It's mainly for convenience so that he doesn't have to hold one for a long duration of time. Another alteration is where a microphone piece similar in size to the head piece microphone rests on the collar of a t-shirt which provides the same support. If you are referring to his left ear, however, it appears to be a hearing aid. Mark Hamill is growing older now but his impressions and characters are still young and fresh!
