Mark is actually a little bit right at the end there: being able to do impressions is a great way to hone your voice, but no one is going to hire you based off of impressions (unless, of course, you're auditioning for a role recently vacated by a deceased actor). You have to find your own voice, your own technique, and make yourself memorable on your own terms!

I know this is older but in rare instances they do. Take the VA for Cleveland Brown. He got hired for his ability to do the voice identical to the original and now Cleveland Brown is voiced by a black man and no longer by a white man.

His complexity wasn't necessary. He needed to be straight up evil. A representation of the Fire Nation's grip on the world. An impossible feat for Aang to overcome. If they had made him more complex, we may have sympathized with him more. Then there wouldn't be any tension in the final battle because we would automatically know that Aang would not kill him. Ozai is my third favorite character in the show. Mark Hamill has a bit to with that.

From how he describes how he came up, I always thought it was fascinating how Mark was someone who came up wanting to be a voice actor, trained to be a voice actor, started his career as a voice actor... then had a couple REALLY iconic live action roles... after which point he went straight back into voice acting cause that's what he actually wanted to do. Luke Skywalker was always the outlier in where he wanted his career to go.
