Found this old vhs tape of an interview I did with Mark Hollis for Danish television. Around the time of the release of his solo album. It's the raw footage, not the edited version that ended up on tv. Sorry about the timecode in picture, and the pour sound quality - and please disregard my questions, they were never meant for broadcast. It cuts off very abruptly, and there is another 20 minutes or so, on another tape somewhere. I'll keep looking for that.
Some of this interview is quoted in the wonderful book by Ben Wardle - Mark Hollis a Perfect Silence.
If anyone knows how to reach mr Wardle, please let him know this exists, maybe he could use more for any future editions of the book - and maybe he'll credit me this time (the credit in the first edition is wrong - since they had no way of knowing, that it really was me interviewing Mark).
R.I.P. Mark Hollis. You were a special talent!
Update: I found the tape with the extra 20 minutes, but unfortunately the quality is even worse than this one, and cannot be used here.

I didn't realise you could sing like that. Bend the phrasing of words. The way he sang (on Happiness is Easy) "sublime the blind parade" just foxed me. I was 13, into Queen and Dire straits. This was something else. It changed me.

I was saddened and angered simultaneously when I learned of his death. More than his music I respected him for his priorities. The fact that he stepped out of the public eye to devote himself to being a father and a husband speaks volumes of his character.

Strangely, I was somewhat angered, too. I wasn't quite sure why, I just felt a unique human being with such an immense and undervalued contribution to humanity was gone, and it wasn't shouted from the hilltops of worldwide media just how important he was..... and how he would never know exactly how important he was to so many lives...then, now, and in the future... I just introduced him to a new friend of mine that is 62years old. I played "After The Flood" for her, and she was immediately in awe. you will live on, Mark, and thank you....

He was amazing as a musician. He was superior as a song writer to all his UK contemporaries. The fact that he left it all to rear his children makes Mark Hollis a true genius with his priorities in life intact. .He was lightyears beyond ALL the other people in the industry.

Every few years i find myself on a Talk Talk/Mark Hollis full on bender, all day and all night the music consumes me. Then time goes by and i drift here there and everywhere on to something else. Right now i am slap bang in the middle of yet another hopeless bender and come across this nugget of gold. Having only seen interviews in the 80s its actually quite shocking to see and hear him talk about all of his work in the past tense, and knowing what we all know now this really was the end. I have no idea what he was like as a person nor do i really care, all i know is the music he created will be a tonic i will use until the day i die.

This guy was a genius in the truest sense. Talk Talk's creative trajectory deserves to be studied in music school. The way they blossomed from a relatively basic synth pop band to a highly experimental group of post-rock trailblazers, shedding any preconceptions of genre or music industry expectations and ended up creating some of the highest musical experiences I've ever heard. Just epic, and so vastly underrated.

Interesting to see him in a button down shirt, tie and trimmed hair to what we see from the concerts of the mid eighties where he still donned the button down shirt, but dyed his hair blond and let it shag out, dark round sunglasses and becoming an introverted, deep and meaningful signer / musician. A lot happening there with clues in this wonderful interview of a very talented, thoughtful and honest artist.

This kind of enriching footage is the true raison d'etre of KZbin and similar services. Thanks for sharing. It's amazing that he talks about writing music to fit one side of a (vinyl) album. 18 minutes (give or take) remains a very natural length for concentrating on music and preserving moments of 'Ma' (Japanese for ‘the emptiness in between’) which is applied masterfully on albums like Laughing Stock. I love his remark: ‘It's not a decision not to be commercial.’

I agree. He was so passionate about music. I love it! This all boils down to values. The true artist values the music, but the commercial side of music only values the money/profitability. This is brutal on great artists like Mark, and it does make me hurt/get angry for the true artists out there. Good on him for putting family first! Such a rare and beautiful gift, both family and musical talent. He was a true artist in every sense of the word. How do you know? His music will sound just as good 100 years from now as it did 40 years ago! Absolutely Timeless!

The only program I know of is Topaz, it uses AI and it does and excellent job. I am unaffiliated. Mark Hollis has been such an inspiration, I cannot express it. I got into Spirit of Eden in about 89' and have orbited it many times, just recently, a friend I had switched on to it, purchased the vinyl version, it included a 24bit 96K version of the album... it is amazing. to appreciate it and have it feel new after 25 years, speaks volumes.

A theory: As a lover of this man's art, his collaborators, etc. I believe our shared love of his work or oeuvre has to do with the fact that he was for all intent & purposes what many would call a 'jazz' musician. Or a superior improvisational musician. If you know anything about Hollis and his methods, least ones that are known to us, I'm sure you would agree. I haven't even finished the interview, only about six minutes in and can already equate his answers to the likes of a Miles Davis, Bill Evans and or Wayne Shorter. Yes, he is up there with the likes of those fellow geniuses. It's not just Hollis however. As some have commented here and rightfully so, Lee Harris & Paul Webb deserve much more praise than they often get. Then I suppose you can add Tim Friese-Greene as well. Lest we forget those brilliant album covers designed by James Marsh too. These elements comprise of Talk Talk. The myriad of musicians that played with them we see/hear live also deserves our attention as well as praise. Talk Talk and its collaborators we were so lucky to have had in the short time they were with us. The likes we surely will not hear or see any time soon, if not at all. Again, just a theory...

Hi Rune, at 40:43 you mention a list Mark wrote concerning the music he listened to the mostly. Do you still have that list by chance? Read your comment on your VHS tape find, hope it all goes well and we can see some of it. I was left quite intrigued at the end you talking about Runeii haha. Greetings and thanks in advance.
